What a Waste
Change Sophia Coppola's name to Sophia Schwartzman and she wouldn't be making movies at all - she would just be the wan little girl greeting you at the entrance to Walmart.
As it is, pure nepotism has opened the directorial door for her and she has stepped through that door to offer one underwhelming project after another.
Case in point: this wasted effort, which could have been a searing indictment of material culture, sociopathic kids, and an intense discussion of unintended consequences.
Instead: an attempted comedy about vapid kids spellbound by branding.
As we watch Sophia's attempted movies we should keep in mind: everything Sophia possesses - all her opportunities - have simply been handed to her. She's never had to work for anything, prove anything, been desperate for anything, her entire life.
She has no empathy for the vacancy at the center of a story like this because she's never felt it.
She's the kind of person who would be stolen FROM.
Not the kind of person stealing.
So naturally she tells this story from the wrong perspective.
Not a total waste of time - but it could have been so much more.
