Madrid-based Begin Again Films has nabbed Santiago Maza’s Mexican documentary “State of Silence,” produced by Diego Luna and La Corriente del Golfo, the shingle he runs with Gael García Bernal.
The sales agency and distributor, which acquired international rights with the exception of North America and Latin America, has also unveiled the film’s first trailer.
“State of Silence,” which traces the harrowing stories of four journalists who risk their lives in pursuit of truth and transparency in Mexico, will have its world premiere simultaneously this month at the Tribeca and Guadalajara Film Festivals before competing at the Sheffield Film Festival for its European premiere.
Santiago Maza
Detailing the endangered state of press freedom in Mexico, the documentary follows the journalists’ journeys as they navigate treacherous terrain in their effort to shed light on the enduring suffering and anxiety experienced by their fellow citizens two decades after the so-called war on drugs began.

When childhood friends Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna starred in the steamy Mexican drama “Y tu mamá también” in 2002, they spent a year traveling the globe, attracting Hollywood attention and dreaming of the future. “We were always fantasizing about what’s next,” said Luna, now 43, in a Zoom interview from his home in Madrid. “We hoped one day we could own a soccer team. That hasn’t happened. But everything else, we managed to achieve.”
Those plans included starting their own production company and a film festival (the itinerant documentary festival Ambulante). They didn’t, however, have anything to do with “Star Wars” or superhero movies.
Yet with Luna starring in the Disney+ “Star Wars” spin-off “Andor” in the same year that García Bernal makes his MCU debut in the Disney+ medium-length feature “Werewolf by Night,” they have arrived at a turning point on their winding journey through popular...

Exclusive: The wild story of crypto couple Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan is headed to the screen. Hulu is in early development on the limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, from Searchlight Television. Lily Collins (Emily In Paris) is set to star as Morgan in the project, which she is producing with Charlie McDowell, who is slated to direct, and Alex Orlovsky.
The trio also produced Windfall, directed by McDowell with Collins starring opposite Jesse Plemons and Jason Segel. The film was released earlier this year on Netflix.
Based on the New York magazine article “The Many Lives of Crypto’s Most Notorious Couple,” the series focuses on Lichtenstein and Morgan, tipped to be either the masterminds behind one of the largest heists in history or a pair of hapless wannabe entrepreneurs who somehow stumbled onto a hard drive containing 3.6 billion in Bitcoin stolen from the Finex exchange.

Chloé Zhao is making her way back to Searchlight.
The studio that shepherded her third feature “Nomadland” to a Best Picture victory in 2021 has just inked a multi-year, first-look TV deal with the two-time Academy Award winner. The recently launched Searchlight Television announced the pact today, marking a homecoming for the filmmaker whose last release was 2021’s swing-for-the-fences MCU entry, “Eternals.” Through the deal, Searchlight Television will have a first look on any series for exclusive development. This also marks the writer, director, and producer’s first foray into episodic storytelling.
Prior to “Nomadland and “Eternals,” Zhao helmed Sony Pictures Classics release “The Rider” in 2017 and Kino Lorber’s “Songs My Brother Taught Me” in 2015. “Eternals” earned mixed reviews and a modest (in relative Marvel terms) box office, and while it marked her first foray into the world of studio filmmaking, it’s not her last — she is also set...

Diego Luna is dismayed over just how much big-budget blockbusters overshadow international art films.
Over 20 years after his Venice Film Festival award-winning turn in Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mamá También,” Luna reflected on the current state of Mexican filmmaking.
“We don’t have a healthy industry these days,” Luna told GQ. “It’s very difficult to get your money back from the box office.”
He added, “The amount of pressure the major [blockbusters] have on cinemas leaves very little space for Spanish-speaking movies.”
Luna is currently leading “Star Wars” Disney+ series “Andor,” set five years before the events of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” one such major theatrical blockbuster.
To Luna, the critically acclaimed “Y Tu Mamá También” marked not only a turning point in his then-budding career but also cemented a new direction for moviemaking as a whole.

Last week, I was prepared to devote this column to the backlash over Ana de Armas apparently retaining her Cuban accent in the trailer for “Blonde,” but the Warner Bros. Discovery decision to cancel “Batgirl” sent me in another direction. The delay was well timed: The discourse over which actors get to play certain roles, specifically within the Latino community, gained another wrinkle when John Leguizamo lashed out at the news that James Franco had been cast as Fidel Castro.
Addressing the nuances of a sensitive cultural landscape is tricky when these mini-scandals demand case-by-case assessment. Most people haven’t seen “Blonde” yet (including me) so who’s to judge the end result? And yes, Franco looks like Castro, but Leguizamo’s point about the dearth of opportunity for Latino actors stands.
No question, actors pretend to be people different from themselves. The tension in these stories stem from another...
