Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t wait to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is Alien.
Personal Memories:
I came very late to the Alien franchise. I am not sure why, but for some reason it was not until a decade ago when I first sat down to watch them. Oddly my first introduction into the franchise happened when I watched the Mel Brooks’s comedy Spaceballs. At the very end at the movie there is a spoof of the infamous chest bursting scene. At at the time did not understand why the horrific act I saw was so funny to a...

The genius of the “Alien” franchise — and the temptation to continue it ad infinitum — is that each of its installments has been so markedly different. From the ominously sparse thriller that first introduced the world to the Xenomorphs, to the steroidal orgy of muscles and machine guns and alien mucus that James Cameron fashioned out of its sequel, to the fascinatingly garbled industrial sludge of “Alien 3,” and so on… this series has proven to be as endlessly adaptable as the extraterrestrial monster that inspired its title.
So, when people complain that “Alien: Covenant” isn’t an “Alien” movie, it’s hard to know what they mean. Apart from strong women, two-mouthed nightmares, and the dark promise of outer space, there isn’t much that runs through this series and ties it together as a stylistically coherent whole. On the contrary, the saga is defined by its flair for change,...

Swiss artist Hr Giger sadly died in 2014, but his legacy lives on in Alien Covenant, as Ryan explains...
Nb: The following contains major spoilers for Alien: Covenant.
See related Star Trek: Discovery - trailer, poster, image & synopsis Star Trek: what do we want from the new TV series?
If Prometheus strongly hinted at the fact, Alien: Covenant pretty much confirms it - Ridley Scott's Alien prequels are primarily about David, the android played by Michael Fassbender. Introduced as the unblinking space butler to billionaire industrialist Peter Weyland, David proves to be Prometheus' mischievous catalyst and most charismatic character: obsessed with Lawrence Of Arabia, quietly resentful of the human crew, and wont to experiment on them using the black space goo (or pathogen) he finds on Lv-223.
Alien: Covenant deepens David's backstory a bit further, reintroducing the synthetic as an embittered genius with daddy issues and a god complex.

Nb: The following contains spoilers for Prometheus and speculation about Alien: Covenant.
See related Why Alien: Isolation proves the Alien deserves another movie
Talk about melodramatic. Having stepped out of a Saturday afternoon IMAX screening of Prometheus in June 2012, your humble writer fell into a steep pit of gloom. A picture of a torn cinema ticket with the caption, “My broken heart” (or something to that effect) was posted on Twitter. A pub was visited; consolatory beers were imbibed.
A film that seemed to have so much promise going in - Ridley Scott’s form in the sci-fi genre, those fan-baiting trailers, complete with the hooting space owls from the old Alien promos - had largely evaporated by the time the end credits rolled. Prometheus...

We are on a fun journey through Ridley Scott’s past at the moment. Not content with plundering the Alien mythos with Prometheus in 2012, and Alien Covenant a few weeks away, we’re also due to catch up with Blade Runner 2049 in October. We’re still waiting for the second trailer for that film to emerge following an enthusiastic reception at CinemaCon, however today brings more Alien Covenant images to tease your expectancy.
These three pics come from Empire, and the fourth from Alien-Covenant.com,
These new images open up the world a litte from the trailers already released. We know that any ship of humans in an Alien film is little more than a sardine tin for whichever variant of the ravenous xenomorph they’ll encounter, so the mystery here is why are they (both aliens and humans) here? The Engineers (the creatures beneath...

The soundstage smells like a walkthrough haunted house you’d find in a strip mall in October. The scent of fog machines and fresh lumber and various chemicals fill the nostrils as you step into the darkness and stare at the giant web of wood and cables emerging from the shadows. Alien: Covanant: 20th Century Fox celebrated Ridley Scott's birthday yesterday by sharing a photo of the director on the set of Alien: Covenant. Sharp-eyed observers noted that the chair in the background may be holding an alien "Engineer," similar to the so-called "Space Jockey" seen in Scott's original Alien. Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Demian Bichir and Danny McBride star; the movie is heading for release on May 19, 2017. [Twitter/Bloody Disgusting] Detective Pikachu: Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) will direct Detective Pikachu. Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch have written the script for the live-action movie, based on a character and storyline in the incredibly popular Pokémon universe, which followed "a boy who...

In honor of Ridley Scott's 79th birthday yesterday 20th Century Fox released a new behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant, which features a familiar face. It's the Space Jockey, which first appeared in the original Alien.
Check it out below:
Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollet, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and Noomi Rapace.
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus -- and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David...

Legendary director Ridley Scott turned 79 on Wednesday, and to mark the occasion 20th Century Fox released a new photo on Twitter from the set of Alien: Covenant. It shows the director standing in front of one of the creations from his 1979 classic Alien, and fanboys already have been quick to notice the Space Jockey, which was hinted in the first film when a derelict ship which contained a fossilized Engineer (and victim of the vicious chestbursting Xenomorphs) was…...

Director Ridley Scott’s birthday is today (he’s 79 years young), and to mark the occasion, the official Alien Twitter account shared a behind-the-scenes photo of him gesturing toward something and standing in front of what appears to be one of the “Space Jockeys” that have popped up in these movies from time to time:

A dead Space Jockey first appeared in the original Alien, but the prequel Prometheus established that it’s actually a being called an Engineer, and they played a much bigger role in that movie. Interestingly, the Alien people have not specifically clarified at this point whether or not this photo is from the set of Prometheus or the upcoming Alien: Covenant, which means this could be a big tease for Scott ...

Following the recent reveal of a new poster and earlier release date for Alien: Covenant, 20th Century Fox celebrated Ridley Scott's 79th birthday today by revealing a new set photo featuring the director and what looks an awful lot like the Space Jockey, aka "the pilot," that the Nostromo crew discovered on Lv-426 in the original Alien.
The new set photo was unveiled on the official Alien Twitter and Facebook pages, and you can view it below. Do you see this as a sign that Alien: Covenant will have a direct link to 1979's Alien?
Previously penciled in for an August 4th, 2017 release, Alien: Covenant is now scheduled to hit theaters on May 19th, 2017. A follow-up to 2012's Prometheus, Alien: Covenant is directed by Ridley Scott and features the return of Michael Fassbender as the android David.

Another photo from the set of Alien: Covenant has been released featuring director Ridley Scott and the iconic Space Jockey chair. The mysterious Space Jockey was first introduced in Alien and its origin was revealed in Prometheus. It looks like it will now play a part in the new film. We'll just have to wait and see what that role will be.
Just in case you don't know, today is Scott's 78th birthday, and Alien: Covenant marks his 24th feature film. The guy has had an incredible career making some amazing movies. He's also being honored for his work as he is set to receive the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction. When it was announced that Ridley Scott’s Prometheus would contain the “same DNA” as the original Alien classic, fans went nuts. Speculation immediately began as to how it would connect. Despite the backpedaling from Scott, who stated the connections would be minute, fans seemed to take any connection to mean a full connection.
Needless to say, when Prometheus finally hit theaters a few years back, there were a good number of fans who were disappointed. There were many aspects of Prometheus that seemed like they would connect, but when the whole scenario played out, it fell short of coming together completely. In addition to some other story issues with film, this resulted in an experience that was less than ideal for many (though I maintain that Prometheus was actually a pretty solid flick).

The Space Jockey rides again.
In honor of Ridley Scott's 79th birthday, 20th Century Fox has released a new set photo from Alien: Covenant, and it shows the director flanking one of the creations from his original 1979 Alien.
That film introduced the mysterious alien race without further exploring it, simply showing a creature who had been killed by the Xenomorph. Over the years, the mythology and fan speculation around the Space Jockey grew, and Scott further developed that mythology in 2012's Prometheus, which suggested its race of aliens to which the Jockey belongs created humanity.

Few movie monsters hold a candle to H.R. Giger’s Xenomorph – its mechanical, surreal biology, elongated skull and acid blood all combine to form a creature that is practically steeped in nightmare fuel, and it’s little wonder that the Alien has become a cornerstone of horror cinema since its inception back in the ’70s.
But with the advent of Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott’s buzzworthy follow-up to Prometheus, it seems Giger’s putrid creation is in line for a small overhaul, as today’s batch of spoiler-sensitive images attest. Hailing from SoIsItAnyGood.com (via Cbm), in the gallery above you’ll be able to take a peek at the Xenomorph in its various biological stages – from facehugger all the way up to the iconic Alien. There’s even a shot of what we assume to be a Alien-like telescope/navigation beacon. Could it be housing another Space Jockey?...

There's been a lot of talk and information regarding the kind of Xenomorph aliens that we'll see in Ridley Scott's upcoming Alien: Covenant. Most recently, we learned that the aliens will be referred to as "Neomorphs," and if you want to read more information on them and how they are born, click here.
Scott also previously revealed that we will see every version of the Xenomorph in the upcoming film. He explained, “We’ll have them all. Egg, face-hugger, chest-burster, then the big boy.” Now thanks to SoIsItAnyGood, we have our first look at some of these aliens!
Below you'll find a look at some eggs, a facehugger, some kind of possible chestbuster, and a crazy-looking creature that could be the neomorph, which looks like a deformed version of the classic alien. There's one other image and it looks like a Space Jockey type chamber, but I'm not really sure.

Flashbacks, prequels and spin-offs - are all these things taking the sense of mystery out of movies? Ryan fears they might be.
“Apparently, she saw an alien once...”
The really effective thing about the Alien movies - particularly the first two - is their sense of mystery. Just as Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s films are united by their intense use of shadow, meaning the title creatures are glimpsed only in part, so Alien and Aliens suggest huge chunks of back-story with a throwaway line or a solitary scene.
Looking again at the 1979 original, it’s evident how pared back its plot is, especially compared to 2016’s crop of summer films. The assorted tensions and histories of Alien’s central characters are hinted at but never expressly shown, meaning we’re allowed to fill in the blanks ourselves. We don’t need acres of exposition to...
