Overall Dope Episode but wack placing in the season
ajgamer-9902717 August 2022
I did actually enjoy this episode. The pacing, tension, and moral? (If you could even call it that) were all gripping and very interesting. And Charles Darwin being a douche and saying I told u so was funny. Again, It was cool seeing the beautiful animation of Primal in a bit more modern context, much more like the average Samurai Jack episode. But I have to agree that placing this random standalone episode after THE most compelling episode in this season so far was a huge mistake. As soon as I saw 1800s London I was confused, and unfortunately for all the episodes good aspects it comes off as a TOTAL non sequitur and a distraction from the story everyone came to watch.

Manage your expectations better, people
voidgun12 August 2022
This episode was a completely different story with thematic ties to the setting, offering the viewer an idea of Genndy's future aspirations for the show to transition into an anthology series of one offs, just like he had stated in his interviews. Is the placement of the episode enough to dismiss the high level of art and opportune potential for Primal as a brand that was infused into this episode? For me, personally, not at all. And those who intend to rate it based solely on that are going to look and feel very silly about doing so if it turns out that it ties into another episode later on this season.

Different but clever

Warning: Spoilers
Darwin is talking about people turning primal when things get tough and one of his peers basically goes primal to fend off a killer.

First they start with guns, then swords/bows, spears then just whatever pointy thing they can find to fend off the killer. Going deeper into the primal to defend themselves.

That's what I got out of it anyway "And there it is" indeed.

We don't deserve this show.
C0NSUM013 August 2022
The amount of negative reviews for this episode is baffling. Nothing is allowed to be unique anymore. Subversion of expectation is lazy storytelling and not relating to the plot makes it filler, apparently. Actually not liking the episode is one thing, but every negative review just boils down to "I don't like it because it doesn't have Spear & Fang" which is a child's way of thinking and proves a complete lack of patience in the audience, which isn't the show's fault.

The episode itself is outstanding. Engaging storyline, beautiful animation, and wonderful dialogue considering that it's the first time English has been spoken the entire series. I was captivated from the very first frame of the episode, and couldn't look away until it was over. But, unfortunately, it has the gall to be different than what people were expecting, so it's currently the lowest rated episode of the entire series.

The title is Primal
nixterer20 August 2022
And that's exactly to what they were reduced. Survival instinct overrides civility. Kill or be killed. I thought it was a really good episode. It gave a look into the animal that we all have, but deny.

Primal's Thesis Statement
jperrottkr6 April 2023
The placement in the season may not be ideal, but it can't be denied that this episode is not only not filler, but an essential addition to Primal.

The show is known for its brutal violence, but this is not just for some sick pleasure in bloodshed. It is an elaboration of the naturalistic perspective (hence Darwin being the deliverer of the theory). Within the context of the show, the violence involved does not speak to the moral debauchery of the characters but rather to the necessary capacity for violence in a brutal environment.

Obviously, these ideas can be understood from other episodes, but concretely putting them into words here opens up a nice pathway forward if Genndy decides to go with his anthology idea for this series. It's not just about Dino and Caveman beating prehistoric monsters' skulls in, it's about being Primal.

Aside from all that, it's just a very well-written and entertaining episode. I think the art style fits the modern era particularly well, dare I say better than the prehistoric setting. I'm glad to see the rating trending upward.

Very interesting and different

Very different, very smart I like how we are getting to see more of the primal world than just spear and fang and blood-thirsty creatures, this spreads the plot a lot more making it more interesting.

Meh...the amount of downvotes is totally understandable
umlaziking13 August 2022
It's a good episode but was it really necessary? This episode is a complete filler and has nothing to do with the main storyline of primal. I love this show and I honestly believe that it's the most unique show to come out in the last 2 decades, but I honestly hope they never do an episode like this ever again. The show is about spear and fang, focus on spear and fang.... It's honestly that simple.

survival of the fittest in the 19th century
Shadowboy_25cm15 August 2022
This stand-alone episode with Charles Darwin and some high society fellows having an evening in a mansion and chat about the origins of man is just great.

Even the most cultivated and cultural homo sapiens has under the right motivation the basic instincts in him when it comes to survival.

Great, entertaining, suspenseful and grim.

Highly recommended.

An odd episode...
m-29823-5709526 August 2022
This was by no means a bad episode, in fact it would be a pretty good stand alone, if it were a different show. See this episode really isn't a primal episode, more like a passion episode. A fun little episode and it's not bad just not our "primal" were used too.

A great bottle episode and standalone
hexproofgameproject14 August 2022
The amount of people that immediately rank this lower just because it doesn't have Spear or Fang in it is mind-boggling.

Great tension, animation, script, build-up, action, horror, this is straight, high-octane Tales from the Crypt, all the while offering more depth to the message of the series.

Might just be my favorite episode so far right beside The Plague of Madness.

A Strange Decision But Still Entertaining
beanslegit19 January 2023
I will admit that I was put off by the opening with the Victorian English carriage drawn by horses at the start. I was like what is going on I thought we were in prehistoric fantasy land not Victorian London...

This second season is really not as compelling to me as the first. We went from our favourite Dino and Caveman duo fighting off mythical giant monsters to mostly fighting humans over and over. It's not as brutally violent too.

Anyways now I've almost reached the ridiculous and stupid character limit required by IMDb lately so I'll end by saying this episode is worth watching, but it's a bit awkwardly placed in the series.

Bait and switch
cmyhre15 August 2022
So you've built up an audience that loves your show's story and characters. Good, now shove an episode so different that it might as well be a different show in there and make sure that no one in the audience knows ahead of ahead of time. And that's how you disappoint a large portion of your audience!

I don't know what Genndy was thinking putting a generic slasher movie with all the cliches and trappings in the middle of an engrossing and emotional story, but it didn't work at all.

I would have been a lot more supportive if we were told what is was upfront, but nah, had to rope in unwitting people. The bait and switch alone makes this a 1/10 episode. I'd give it a zero if I could.

Chalk it up to Artistic Freedom, Right?

Warning: Spoilers
I've gotta admit that I kept expecting Fang to show up and save the day!! Tell say that's unreasonable. It was an interesting episode, but given how long we waited for Season 2 and how few episodes we will get, it's sort of a letdown. I'm very invested in this show. This episode really didn't contribute anything to the plot, but it was entertaining. I'm still giving an 8/10. I did enjoy it.

The Ties That Bind are Strong
lav7213 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the direction this episode took! We look at the title 'Primal' as just that. But the point of the show is about human instinct. Spear is a caveman who only knows survival, and has Fang with him for the ride. But Primal is more than that: it applies to any and everything about humanity. This episode showed how survival can make ANY man or woman revert to animal instinct in order to survive. What we saw was a somewhat modern day devolution from man to savage...something not thought of.

Really poor choice of placement. The episode was okay. While it was basic it did have some good moments. Overall though probably wouldn't watch again.

Excellent episode despite bad reviews from shortsighted fans
samalexandre-641-91766521 August 2022
Whenever a series deviates a bit from its main script and characters, shortsighted fans scream and call it crap.

People, look at the big picture. This series is about primal instinct and this episosde is a great attempt to look deeper into its material.

I enjoyed it very much. The tension is a good as it gets. Sit back and enjoy this great show.

Amazing episode we did not expect.
nikostsoup12 October 2022
Such a cool episode of a great show. Very intriguing characters, clever script that seemed like a brutal Scooby Doo episode. Loved the animation of the 19th century England and the old people locked in an epic battle with a human-like monster. I didn't care that it had nothing to do with the show so far 'cause it was something different that was shockingly good. I don't understand the bad reviews on that episode. You hated the most different and unique episode of this very different and unique show? That's what we are here for. I hope this show continues to be that good 'cause that episode set the bar too high.

The weakest episode yet
josenaruto-5344225 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It felt like a total different series, I don't mind not seeing Spear or Fangs. An episode about Mira's past would be cool and it doesn't need them to appear. But jumping from one of the ebst episode we had full with action, to an episode about a group of rich men on the England of 1900 is really weird.

And don't tell me the episode has an idea that I didn't get, the idea is not subtle at all, civilized men turning into animals for survivial. The start of the episode was pretty decent, bu turning what could have been a debate episode full of just conversation for the first time hearing english, turned into them just screaming and fighting with a lunatic. It's not even the story of the episode what makes me but this note, but the development, turning it into Primal but in 1900 wich was really dumb.

Different but still excellent!
clayusaf15 August 2022
I know most will be upset about the change happening in this single episode. And that's fine. In fact humans hate change in their life to begin with.

That being said this is still some of the best storytelling and production you could get out of a show. In 5-10 years when new fans watch this. They will call it a masterpiece. Sadly we are the victims of our own impatience. Give it a second watch fans!!

Not in line with the series (as far as we know)
lawrencelawrence8618 August 2022
It's seems to be a standalone episode, I can understand the hunger for the story given how close the end of the series is but for some to rate it so low seems unfair as I'm sure anyone finding this episode if they had never seen primal before would love it.

An exciting one off story
holdfast-0974115 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I too was throw of at first, after such a fantastic previous episode, I was eager to continue the story. But I was very satisfied with this one over all. A one off story with Charles Darwin trying to convince a group of colleagues that humans can revert to their primal selves to preserve their own life. Throw in an escaped convict and a house full of weapons from throughout history and you know where this is going.

While I was able to predict where the story was going, I enjoyed every bloody second.

Anyone who is a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky should appreciate this episode. It has been a real treat to see how far his animation style has come, so much detail in the characters and the backgrounds and of course the fights are always top notch. It was fun to see all these elements brought to a more modern timeline like 1890

I understand this episode will not be for everyone, but try not to condemn the entire show and it's creator. Artists need to follow their inspiration, and that's what they did here.

A concept of being a primitive species is totally unbelievable, even though this episode has nothing to do with Spear and Fang
seiyafuma26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have a theory not about the primal universe, but about the situation that happened in the history of the chapter itself.

That day Charles could have summoned the members of the scientific society to a meeting to present his theory of involution but he could also have planned the situation that occurred, because it is striking that just on the day that Charles exposes his theory to the members of that society, that almost primitive guy escapes and appears right in that house, he was also very excited to prove that he was right before the leader of the society. That is to say, Charles planned to release the almost primitive type in that meeting where the members of the scientific society were to prove his theory.

Someone could refute this by arguing that Charles himself put himself at risk, so it doesn't make sense, but he could very well be the type of person who would risk everything to prove that he was right.

Anyway to be fair, from the way the chapter ends, it's more likely just a fluke, but if it had been planned by Charles it would have been a surprising twist.

such a great show, such a terrible episode
jaimegiant14 August 2022
This is so far the worst episode of the series. A series that is absolutely original and in some way genius. This however does nothing to drive the main narrative forward and is also not compelling in any way. None of the characters are sympathetic and I find myself wishing this episode wound up edited out in it's entirety.

I'm sorry, no, this isn't a misunderstood episode, it's just filler.
isaactheanimator13 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was really surprised at first when I first watched this episode and saw that it was literally going for something different from the original series. It was something I didn't really have a problem with except the episode was just eh and it definitely wastes its time with the beast in the episode that fails to capture the magic of what made Primal so great in Season 1. The beast general motive (from his movements, actions) is incredibly confusing. I'm not sure at all whether he is an intelligent creature or a rapid animal. He gives facial remarks constantly through the episode like he's fully aware he's killing these people for sick pleasure. Except where did this creature really come from? Is the world in modern times filled with different human creatures? Are ones more savage than the other and how does the world build around that? Truth is I don't even want to asks these questions because I know Primal is a straight forward simplistic series. But Primal started in its own fantasy prehistoric universe with no rules, it was allowed to go where it wanted to go and see as many new, crazy ideas as we can and this episode is now suddenly jumping us to the 1800s and introduces us this idea in close to modern times without any clarification on how this world is supposed to work at this time. The horror aspect of this episode is very weak in my opinion. The beast kills everyone except the last 2 characters and they keep standing up every time they take a punch from him. And the fight drags on for way too long because of bad aim. The ending was just basic. It just seems like another one of those generic cases where of course the person at the beginning disagrees with the theme of the story but then skip through the whole episode of action and suddenly he fits the conclusion to it at the end. People are trying to say "Come on, don't dismiss this episode just because it's a filler episode, pay more attention to it and look at the complexity and deep aspects of it" Except there is none of that here. The theme is executed in the really bad cliche that it has really nothing to do with the story only except the beginning and end of the episode. Arguably I can't really say that's the entirety of Primal either. Primal is just generally good at pacing and exploiting emotions out of the characters without the usage of dialogue. I can't say that's one of the biggest accomplishments of the visual medium. That's more of a unique style. And proof that Genndy actually understood his characters without exposition dumping his way through the plot. Primal S2 has been very weak so far tho and I'm genuinely not impressed. The series has been noticeably less character driven than the previous season and it focuses less on the charm of the 2 characters' interactions and more on cliches and moments of wasting time with no communication. What I loved about S1 Episode 9 was completely absent in S2 Episode 3. And I can't really say I have much faith in where S2 is going as much anymore.
