It's always great to see John Light back as Flambeau.
Sleepin_Dragon6 February 2023
The Flambeau episode, it's a bit like seeing The Daleks in Doctor Who, the star villain, but one that may have been somewhat guilty of being overused.

In this instance though, Flambeau's presence really did work, John Light was excellent as always, he always adds something.

The storyline was a very good one, and it made a nice change for Flambeau to be The hunted, as opposed to The hunter.

Some very good scenes between Father Brown and Inspector Sullivan, a bit of venom in some of those lines. I was about to say the episode had a slightly more serious tone, apart from one ridiculous scene, not sure I need to explain the one, but Mrs Devine disguised as Father Brown...no words.

Overall, great to have Flambeau back, good storyline, and one absurd moment, it's why we love Father Brown.

7/10.

Return of Flambeau

It's always fun when John Light returns to Kembleford. I agree with the other reviewers who are not fans of the new cast. You can always rely on Mark Williams, but the newbies don't have the same chemistry. Mrs. Devine spends half an episode looking silly (she's too young to be the mother figure that Mrs. M was). And suddenly Inspector Sullivan has turned into a whiny, petulant baby who wants to go back to Scotland Yard. During his first tour of duty in seasons 2 and 3, he did not come across as an angry man.

Not all of season 10 has been shown in the US (Britbox shows 2 per week) so I'm curious about the rest of this season.

The return of Flambeau

Always look forward to the appearance of John Light as the great thief Hercule Flambeau.

Although It's taking a bit of time warming to the new new characters the new housekeepers attempts to woo inspector Sullivan are funny.

This episode is a little more serious with several murders attributed to flambeau and more conscious policing from Goodfellow but it is John Light that shines in this episode A terrific actor with an impressive CV but one of my favourite turns by him was the ruthless special branch officer in the pilot episode of Endeavour. This episode has it all murder, theft and is very character driven not relying on the usual obvious who done it mystery.

The one to one with Flambeau and Inspector Sullivan was a bit heavier than the normal and the bad guys a little more ruthless..

The Hidden Man

Warning: Spoilers
The Hercule Flambeau stories are always a highlight of each season of Father Brown. Unfortunately this one fell slightly short.

There has been a theft and a dead body was left behind. Flambeau is wanted for murder.

Inspector Sullivan knows that Flambeau will turn up in Kembleford to see Father Brown. This could be his fast track back to Scotland Yard.

Flambeau does seek out Father Brown, he tells Father Brown that he is being framed. Someone has set up an elaborate trap.

Maybe going to an auction will provide the answers. It leads to another death and Flambeau realises that someone has a personal vendetta against him.

It is a flimsy story. Another one in this series where the culprit is easy to figure out because of a bad wig or facial hair.

Flambeau the master of disguise manages to evade the police and security by looking just like Flambeau, the much sought after master criminal.

Flimflambeau

I've tried to fall in love with this series again but sadly even with the return of Tom Chambers and introduction of Claudie Blakley (of Lark Rise to Candleford fame) there appears to be no saving it now.

The scripts and storylines have become embarrassingly poor and some of the characters feel like they have been shoehorned in from 2023 into 1950. This episode merely confirmed it. It would appear when they have run out of ideas let's make another almost identical episode with Flambeau.

I know it's only daytime escapism but at least try and make an effort and watch the early episodes to see how it was previously done.

A plot hole so big you can drive a Jaguar through.

Warning: Spoilers
In fact, that is what they did.

It's possible that Flambeau may not have recognized the serving girl from earlier in the episode, or remember her, but to not mention that a girl was involved with the auctioneer in any way to the detective, and/or the sergeant, is a mystery in and of itself. However, not mentioning an obviously conspicuous bright red Jaguar sports coupe is just bad writing. How many of those are driving around Kembleford???

Then there is John Light's tan, if that was what it was. Fresh from an island vacation or a tanning bed?

I do not know the back story of this series, but it seems it ended, and most actors moved on, but Britbox picked it back up? Perhaps they should have left it to die off gracefully. Everything now seems forced. I like Blakley well enough, but. Ruby-May Martinwood is fairly off-putting. She comes across like a cranky old lady stuck in the body of a snarky twenty-something. The inspector(s) being resentful of Father Brown had become tiresome. I would think that in a small village with a murder rate now higher than modern day Chicago would be more concerning and Brown's help appreciated.

It was a nice little series for a Saturday night, but let's go back to likeable characters and believable storylines. If not, then. Mark Williams needs to officially give last rites to it.
