A moving and intriguing mystery.

The leading man at The Kembleford players dies, soon after flashing with the leading lady, with Father Brown and Inspector Sullivan both having parts in the latest production of Much ado about nothing, it's a race to learn the truth.

A pretty good episode this one, somewhat lighter in tone than the rest of the series so far, but enjoyable and intruding nonetheless. It's one of those where it isn't glaringly obvious whodunnit, you're made to wait until the end. Some powerful and passionate scenes, a very strong ending.

I am enjoying the relationship that's developing between Inspector Sullivan and Mrs Devine, I hope they build on it, I'll say it again, I don't think Claudie Blakley has ever looked more radiant, or happy in a part, if ever an actor has looked super content in a part, it's here.

Great acting, I thought the regulars were terrific as always. Some fine costumes here too, Inspector Sullivan donned in that costume, looking good.

Very good, 8/10.

The Show Must Go On

Warning: Spoilers
It must be the smallest show on earth. The Kembleford Players have joined up with a visiting drama company to put on some Shakespeare.

Only for boozy leading man Jeremy Sanford to end up dead, he was poisoned. He had been mocking his leading lady Charlotte earlier.

She in turn complained about him to her husband Patrick Maidland, who it the director of the play.

Father Brown investigates. It seems Jeremy had a history of running scam companies and swindled people. In the past Patrick had been an accomplice.

Charlotte looks like an obvious suspect but her mobility was impaired with a leg in plaster. It looks like someone from Jeremy's past might have a grudge against him.

There was some nice interplay between the characters as both Inspector Sullivan and Sergeant Goodfellow take part in the am-dram production.

It was also good to see both Sullivan and Mrs Devine developing a closer relationship.

I still thought the culprit was easy to guess. I could not understand why at the end Patrick Maidland was not arrested. Both for child neglect and his part in scamming people.

Really good balance of tragic and joyful plots

This episode is an emotional rollercoaster in the last few scenes especially! Mirroring the community am-dram Shakespeare play in this episode, there are a few gently funny bits throughout, mixed with tragedy and romance. Whilst not particularly original, the storytelling and characterisation are so multi-faceted, especially for a 40 min drama. I've always watched Father Brown, but Season 10 really is up a level and has weathered the cast changes well - uplifting to see the contrast of how sad Father Brown was at the start of this block when he was missing so many people, to being in his element with a new team. Gives hope to us all.
