J. Haven Wilde steals the show

Warning: Spoilers
I usually love flashback episodes, if nothing else than to give us insight into a character's history or upbringing. This episode in general isn't anything special but the kid who plays young Jesse (J. Haven Wilde) KILLED with his portrayal of young Jesse. His cadence is on par with Danny McBride, so much that my husband thought it was really McBride's voice dubbed in. His mannerisms are perfect as well, he definitely studied Danny's actions and way of speaking a lot prior to this. Very impressed! I also appreciate this backstory into Amber & Jesse's relationship, Eli's complicated relationship with his sister, as well as a hard look at Judy when she was younger. Not the best episode but definitely far from the worst.

Episode 305

Warning: Spoilers
There is one thing you have to say about this show and that they have picked a good group of kids to play the younger versions of the Gemstones. I also like that they did not have the adult characters make a brief appearance at the end like some shows do (cough, Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, cough) just to make sure the big names get their credit for every episode.

But the young Jesse sounds exactly like him and had the mannerisms down.

There may not have been a good story here and they didn't really accomplish much with the flashbacks that could not have simply been explained in the present, but still not bad overall.

Boring

As this episode takes place in the past, it completely misses the mark. No adult Gemstone kids, not fun at all. What makes the show work are the actors, especially the siblings, and seeing them as kids doesn't interest me at all. Should have at least tried to be funny, ended up being obnoxious. Also, Judy in 2000 should be what 25 years old not a school kid. So feels weird all around.

So far season 3 has been hit and miss, so far a bit more hit than miss for me personally so hopefully it'll keep getting more hits going forward. Less past and more present would be preferable. Let the mom RIP already...

Pointless prequel

I doubt that anyone wanted to see this episode. It's a total waste. It ads NOTHING to the series. I don't need to know why the characters are supposedly who they are. Their craziness is what makes them so much fun. "No batteries required."

Also, the ages of the children make no sense - they would be about ten years older. Was the Y2K thing SO essential, that they threw out common sense?

I have no idea WHY they created this episode. It took me three days to slog through it, and I can binge an entire series in a few days.

And contrary to what they THOUGHT, it ads NOTHING to the series. I don't know the characters any better. A totally dumbed-down episode, that only disappoints.
