George R.R. Martin, an avid comic book fan, has stated that he dislikes so-called "comic book deaths", where a character comes back to life without ill effects. This is why Beric Dondarrion's resurrections by Thoros of Myr are characterized by injuries that never fully heal and huge gaps in his memory. In a 2017 Interview with Time, Martin detailed the process of Beric's resurrections, stating, "His memories are fading, he's got all these scars, he's becoming more and more physically hideous, because he's not a living human being anymore. His heart isn't beating, his blood isn't flowing in his veins, he's a wight, but a wight animated by fire instead of by ice, now we're getting back to the whole fire and ice thing."
Jon and Ygritte fell in love in the show. In real life, Kit Harington (Jon) and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) married in 2018.
The episode title "Kissed by fire" is a phrase used by the wildlings to describe red-haired people (like Ygritte). Since red hair is rare among the wildlings, they consider it as a sign for good luck.
The episode won an Emmy Award for outstanding makeup for a single-camera series (non-prosthetic).
When Shireen is teaching Davos how to read, she says "A-E-G, those letters together sound like Egg." This is a nod to Aegon V Targaryen, or "Egg" from the prequel novellas 'Tales of Dunk and Egg'.
