Charming Enough

Not exactly sure what I was expecting for an AMC show starring two AMC alum who haven't exactly made major waves outside their respective major AMC roles. I guess it confirms the diversity of their acting (although I'm not exactly sure who was questioning it), but moreover it actually worked as a presentable show, with a solid premise and solid promise. I look forward to seeing how it develops. I like both of the lead roles and their performers (secretly have the biggest crush on both of them, too.) It was well directed, the main cast has some of my extended list of actors/actresses I enjoy. Not much else to say other than it was good enough to pique my interest and I am looking forward to watching it weekly. 7.5/10.

Pilot

Warning: Spoilers
This was a really strong pilot here. I was wondering what kind of show Bob Odenkirk would follow Better Call Saul up with and I think they made the right choice with this one. It is something completely different, but it also feels like a high-brow take on a low-brow subject.

The character makes a lot of jokes, but also seems believable at the same time. He is the kind of person that we know someone like and have come across in the workplace.

The supporting cast does not feel strong at all though, but I am definitely impressed and really enjoyed the start to this rare new AMC television program.

Frasier vibes

I just finished watching the first episode of "Lucky Hank," and I must say, it's a cute and charming show. The warm lighting, wooden furniture and designs, and small-town vibes create a lighthearted atmosphere that's easy to get lost in. The show has its own unique atmosphere and humor, sitting somewhere between that little HBO series "Olive Kitteridge" and the classic "Frasier."

Bob Odenkirk is absolutely amazing in his conflicted role, tackling middle-aged existential problems with a dry humor that doesn't leave you feeling heavy or sad. Instead, the show manages to leave you with an uplifted mood.

After watching it and while doing some chores around the house, I found that the light music from the show stayed in my head, along with some memorable quotes and bits of witty conversations. "Lucky Hank" created a light, joyful, and reflective mood for me, making it the perfect show to unwind and relax with. If you're in the mood for a heartwarming series with a touch of clever humor and a unique atmosphere, give this one a shot!

Mind Over Chatter
TheFearmakers22 March 2023
The pilot feels like a filler episode of a series in its second season and doesn't have to prove anything anymore... that's NOT a good way to START...

Okay, let's literally begin at the top, the summary:

"Hank rants against Railton College, calling it Mediocrity's Capitol and the administration is pressured to fire him.'

This is followed by:

"Hank and Lily contemplate a future outside of Railton."

The first part happens within the first five minutes, and would have worked better without being spoiled, and the second reads like something the audience should wind up carrying about...

"Future outside of Railton" is supposed to matter, somehow?

But after forty minutes, we don't know one thing about this college except that the title character simply doesn't want to be there...

Meanwhile, the main gimmick is Hank's inner monologue... his narration... which would work better, and would make him far more interesting, if he actually SPOKE these comparably blunt opinions that he's keeping to himself...

The audience and the characters surrounding LUCKY HANK have no idea how to deal with this person that an entire series is supposed to be based around... and if he doesn't outwardly care about anything, why should they, and, most important...

Why should we?

For an AMC series, LUCKY HANK doesn't feel like it's coming from the channel that has provided quality shows, other than just the obvious, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul... it feels more like a network series, or an idea for a network series without being fully developed...

Mundane is the best word to describe a deliberately droll collegiate series that's supposed to be so dry that it intellectually rises above the dreariness it's conveying...

But it's simply trying too hard not to matter, and so it doesn't matter at all.
