Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 11-02-2016
After a brief hiatus from reviewing the great books of DC Comics I hop back and see what the current state of various series are. Officially moved from “I kind of care” to “I don’t care at all” are Cyborg, Justice League, Blue Beetle, Doom Patrol, Catwoman: Election Night and probably a few others soon. So the review list gets shorter! I am casually keeping up with these titles so if anyone has questions or thoughts feel free to sound off in the comments below and I’m more than happy to engage in discussion!
Aquaman #10
Story: Dan Abnett Art: Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessy, Gabe Eltaeb
Review: Mera is brought before the widowhood and a prophesy is revealed that at some point in the future Mera will become insane with grief after Arthur befalls an untimely end, and thus...

This week in Mad Men history lessons: Time looks at the history of Burger Chef while Vulture explains I Am Curious (Yellow) the “dirty movie” Don and Megan saw.
AMC is previewing Halt and Catch Fire, the upcoming period tech drama. This is the first time a cable channel has previewed a show on its Tumblr page. Too bad AMC still insists on streaming video in that tiny window.
Halt and Catch Fire
How accurate was Lysa‘s claims about what happens to the victims of the Moon Door on Sunday’s Game of Thrones? Surprisingly, it turns out the show overstated the dramatic impact. However, it would still be pretty deadly. Lysa probably hates finding out she was wrong.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, departing Dancing with the Stars showrunner Conrad Green says the show has been increasingly difficult to cast, “The problem is, we’re...

Madame Frankenstein #1
Written by Jamie S. Rich
Illustrated by Megan Levens
Published by Image Comics
Female Frankenstein’s Monster Lives Up to Shelley’s Original
Any work of literature attempting to capitalize on Mary Shelley’s seminal novel of gothic horror has a great deal to live up to. More often than not, modern attempts to rework Shelley’s classic fall short by a wide margin – take a look at the recent film adaptation of I, Frankenstein for proof. However, sometimes an author or an artist (or in this case, both) will come along and create something worthy enough to carry the “Frankenstein” moniker in its title. Madame Frankenstein, the creation of the Levens & Rich team, lives up to its namesake. In issue one, at least.
The story begins with a brief introduction to Courtney Bow as she meets Doctor Vincent Krall at an outdoor dinner party. Thankfully, Rich only...

Review Caroline Preece 4 Nov 2013 - 07:00
Caroline checks out this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries, Monster's Ball...
This review contains spoilers.
5.5 Monster's Ball
There are two sides to The Vampire Diaries right now – the non-interesting mess that is the Silas/Katsia/Cure plotline, and Katherine’s unexpected journey to redemption. The side you are enjoying the most depends on why you’ve been watching this show for the past five years, and Monster’s Ball did some interesting things with both. The end of this episode could mean very very good or very very bad things for the series moving forwards and, as always, I’m optimistic for the former.
We start off with the season’s apparent big bad – Dr. Maxfield. His experiments on a newly undead Jesse feel worryingly like yet another Buffy rip-off in the form of a scientific angle on the supernatural just as our heroes enter college but,...

The Vampire Diaries Episode 505
“Monster’s Ball”
Written By: Sonny Postiglione
Directed By: Kellie Cyrus
Original Airdate: 31 October 2013
In This Episode...
Hey guess what? We are no longer in high school... but we still have school dances. Great. This dance is a costume ball to celebrate some historical collection that the college got. All the usual suspects are there: Caroline and Tyler and Bonnie and Clyde; Elena and Damon are Anne Boleyn and Henry the 8th; Stefan is James Dean; and Tessa is Cleopatra.
Damon had devised a plan, fact checked with Bonnie via Jeremy, and agreed to by Silas: Damon wants to use Silas’s death as a way to bring back Bonnie. Bonnie is not okay with this because she fears the consequences, but they are going to forge ahead. Silas agrees when Damon comes to him with the proposal, but he needs something from Damon. Silas wants Damon to kill Stefan.
