Cool retrospective documentary

Warning: Spoilers
This doc offers a tight and engrossing 20 minute look at the making of the third entry in the "Return of the Living Dead" franchise. Brian Peck, who's the sole cast member to appear in all three films, talks about a script he and make-up artist Kenny Myers came up with which got rejected. Director Brian Yuzna and writer John Penney recall how they both got attached to the project. Moreover, Penney reveals that his screenplay about the difficulty of letting go of someone you love who has just died was inspired by the recent death of his father and openly acknowledges that the central tragic love story was patterned after Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Lead actor J. Trevor Howard talks about his audition as well as his refusal to do nudity and the difficulty he had with a big crying scene. In addition, we find out that Don Calfa and James Karen from the first one were considered for roles, the casting of Kent McCord and Sarah Douglas in principal supporting parts (Yuzna remarks that Douglas was hard on people on the set in a good sort of way), a scrawny homeless man who was cast as a zombie had trouble with the leather thong he was wearing, the casting of Mindy Clarke in the female lead, Yuzna wisely having several make-up teams handle various effects for the picture, and the notorious sequence where Clarke's character pierces herself with glass shards and whatnot. Boasting some nifty videotaped behind-the-scenes footage, this one's well worth a watch for fans of the film.

Love Beyond the Grave A Look at Return of the Living Dead III: Meagre effort
Platypuschow26 November 2017
It's like they just couldn't be bothered. After making two documentaries they pulled together a few interview segments told a couple of stories and called it a documentary.

The sad thing is I think Return Of The Living Dead III is an underrated gem. Though they shifted genre nearly entirely from the first two movies it was a very good watch and incredibly grisly.

Mindy Clarke is sadly absent as are most of the cast, this whole thing just feels half hearted.

Watchable for fans, but a lackluster minimal effort mess overall.

The Good:

Interviews are okay

The Bad:

Far too short

Very little actual content

Things I Learnt From This Documentary:

The lead actor ate all the pies, all of them

Love Beyond the Grave: A Look at Return of the Living Dead 3 (2011)

*** (out of 4)

Nice, 20-minute look at the making of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3 features interviews with the film's director Brian Yunza as well as its lead star J. Trevor Edmond, the screenwriter John Penney and make-up artist Steve Johnson. Also on hand is Graham Henderson once again saying he wanted nothing to do with a sequel and we get Brian Peck and Kenny Myers talking about their original idea for a sequel that was turned down. From here we learn about how Yunza got involved in the project as well as how the cast was selected and even a few ideas about having James Karen and Don Calfa return to the series. One nice thing about this documentary is that we get quite a bit of behind-the-scenes footage that was shot on the actual set so we get to see some of the make-up creations being done as well as get to see Yunza directing. Even actor Edmond gets to tell a rather funny story about the nudity in the film and why he couldn't do it. Overall, if you're a fan of the film then you're going to enjoy hearing all these stories and there's no question that you really get a good idea of what went into making the film and why it became a love it or hate it cult movie.
