- Doc and Rebecca close in on a man who may be the key to revealing the secrets behind all the returning criminals. Meanwhile, Hauser makes a discovery beneath the halls of Alcatraz that brings him ever closer to the truth.
- CURRENT - Dr. Lucy Singupta is in the lab-prison watching four monitors at the same time each with an interview of a different recovered prisoner. Emerson Hauser comes in and says, When they said, Take it easy, this was not what they meant. He has to check in with Rebecca Madsen and Dr. Diego Soto and Lucy offers to come along. He says that Dr. Milton Beauregard said it would be too early for that. Lucy reads Emerson perfectly and says that the real reason is that Emerson hasnt told his team about her yet. As he hesitates, she says, Theres no time except now. Thats what you used to say.
She consults with Dr. Beauregard who admits to being unsure about the side-effects of the transfused blood, so she says shell go by herself.
CURRENT - Stillman busts into an armored truck (somehow, he has the right security patch on his uniform), and when the real guards come back with the cash boxes, Stillmans accomplices hold them up and push them into the truck. They disable the GPS tracking device and take the guards uniforms. The guards, in their underwear, are shoved out as the truck drives away.
1960 - Stillman is playing chess by himself in the Rec Yard when the warden comes by and makes a move with the knight saying that its his favorite piece since its the only one that plays well in complex and locked positions. The warden invites Stillman to the next Review Board meeting. Stillman declines, saying he is only a thief and wonders what he can possibly steal from that meeting. As he walks away, the warden reminds him of the time of the meeting.
CURRENT - At the dungeon, Soto is clearing his space by the computers in anticipation of Lucys return. He expresses his concerns now that they know Lucy also made the jump and knew, and was actually with, the prisoners, including Rebeccas grandfather. Emerson and Lucy enter the dungeon. Soto offers her a handshake and a hug. Rebecca gives Lucy a stack of files of the prisoners they have captured since the shooting. Lucy flips through them quickly but takes a long look at Ernest Cobbs file. As Emerson slinks away, Lucy says they owe Rebecca and Soto an apology. Soto says he never heard of a female doctor on the island and she shrugs it off as another one of the wardens secrets. Soto asks her what they are calling a jump was like. Lucy tells them its not that she has to re-adapt to what a record player or phone looks like, but that the hardest part is remembering who she used to listen to the record player with or who she spoke on the phone with - that while she was gone, they had lived an entirely different life without them, and that she is now in their world, but not of their world.
Lucy tells Soto she is impressed with the features Soto has added to their computer wall, just as a notice appears about an armored truck robbery. Both recognize this as the work of Garrett Stillman, a former military strategist for the British SAS until he came to the US after the war. Lucy says Stillman was a real gamesman and planned elaborate robberies. She guesses this one robbery is not Stillmans end game.
Stillman and his crew have pulled into an alley and are getting into their get-away van. Stillman calls to one of them to toss him one of the bags which just contains the guard uniforms. As they agree to meet later, Stillman drives off in the truck as the crew piles in the van. The van explodes.
CREDITS
CURRENT - At the crime scene, Soto wonders aloud if Rebecca is being nice to Lucy because Lucy may help her find out more about her grandfather. Rebecca responds that she is always nice.
At the security company, they find out that two trucks have been stolen in the past month. Stillman had a legitimate badge code which is why the guard let him into the truck. Rebecca tells them to change their badge codes immediately.
Emerson catches Lucy going over Cobbs file. He recommends she go speak to him face-to-face in the lab-prison. Lucy says that Rebecca has been a good addition to their team just like she thought she would be. Emerson thinks Rebecca takes everything too personally. Lucy counters that that is a good thing and that he used to be like that.
One of Emersons techs comes by, saying hello to Lucy as Dr. Banerjee, and shows them a scan of the building around the dungeon showing that there is a hollowed area under the lighthouse. Emerson shrugs it off but Lucy confirms that there was a bulkhead built during the Civil War leading to the lighthouse.
One of Stillmans crew survived the explosion and tells Rebecca and Soto that Stillman had a guy who supplied him with the guns for the job. They are hopeful that if they catch Stillman, they will find out who has been directing the 63 in their current-day crimes.
Stillman drives the truck to a hidden warehouse with an Aire-Stream trailer inside.
1960 - Stillman is watching the Review Board meeting. Harlan Simmons is called up. He claims model behavior but then the deputy warden testifies and points out multiple infractions involving moving contraband. Parole is denied.
Afterwards, the warden asks Stillman what he thought. Stillman figures the deputy warden will never let Simmons leave because he gets a cut from Simmons contraband. The warden wants Simmons off the island before he is next up for parole in 1965. Stillman asks the warden if he wants him to steal the Boards recommendation letter and replace it with one marked approved. The warden notes that the Board will be having lunch at his home before they leave Alcatraz, so that may give Stillman the opportunity to ply his trade.
CURRENT - Stillman knocks on the Aire-Stream door and goes inside. He tells a man sitting in the shadows that the job is completed. The man tells him to worry about the chess pieces and the hell worry about the board. Its Tommy Madsen.
CURRENT - Rebecca is looking through the boxes in the archive when Lucy comes by. Lucy prompts her to ask anything she wants and Rebecca grills her with questions about Tommy. Lucy describes him as relentless and patient. Lucy doesnt know why Tommy killed Rebeccas partner. Rebecca reminds Lucy that a guard made the jump and went to see Uncle Ray in an effort to find Tommy. Emerson thinks Tommy is important in all this but does not know why. Lucy can only confirm that they took a lot of blood from Tommy. Rebecca is surprised to find out that Lucy had a relationship with Emerson back in the day. Lucy describes the young Emerson as romantic and talkative. Rebecca asks what changed him and Lucy says he had spent the past 50 years looking for her.
Soto has discovered that Broadway Mutual, a company serviced by the same security company, was founded by Harlan Simmons. Rebecca recognizes him as a billionaire; Soto says he is reclusive and no one has seen him since the Seventies. Soto wonders how much of Simmons cash Stillman can fit into the three stolen trucks.
1960 - In the mess hall, Stillman has recruited three prisoners with unique talents to help him with the plan. In exchange for 10% each of Simmons contraband operation, one will steal the carbons from the trash left after the Review Boards hearing. One will then use the carbons to copy the signatures onto counterfeited forms. The third, assigned to work at the wardens house during that luncheon, will let Stillman, wearing a stolen stewards uniform, into the house. Stillman will then make the switch.
CURRENT - At Broadway Mutual, a security representative assures them that there is nothing to steal, that all the assets are ones and zeros on a computer. Rebecca wonders why they would need to contract with the security company but he pleads ignorance. She threatens to go to Simmons himself, but he only wishes her luck with that.
When they leave, Soto asks Rebecca if she saw that the representative started getting upset at the mere mention of the security company. The representative watches as they leave and then starts sending a text. Stillman, lurking locally in a surveillance van with his crew, is told by his computer geek that the security representative is texting for an immediate pick-up. Stillman shoots the geek and pushes him out of the van.
Emerson and his tech are walking around the underground when they detect a cavity behind a wall. Emerson tells the tech to get a crew together with a sledgehammer to find out what is behind the wall.
Lucy taps into the security companys logs and they find out Broadway Mutual has a package transferred once a month. Rebecca wonders why Stillman would steal the trucks so far in advance if he knew the schedule. Lucy thinks Stillman was counting on Broadway Mutual panicking and advancing the delivery. Soto finds a record of that text message and they head out to intercept the delivery. Lucy will stay to resume her work, interviewing the recovered prisoners, including Cobb. As Emerson leaves, Lucy reminds him not to shoot anyone. He denies knowing what she is referring to.
1960 - At the wardens house, Stillman gets let in and heads to the dining room. The warden is momentarily surprised to see him, but the deputy warden is completely puzzled by why Stillman is there. We next see Stillman headed for one of the Board members briefcases.
When the luncheon breaks up, the deputy warden sees Stillman and follows him back into the kitchen. Stillmans accomplice immediately squeals, telling the deputy warden that Stillman switched envelopes with a Board member.
CURRENT - Stillman arrives with his crew for the pickup, but his badge does not scan. He pulls a gun on the guard and knocks him out.
CURRENT - Emerson arrives too late, and finds the guard tied up. He calls Rebecca who is at the front of the bank. She sees the truck drive by and follows. We see the truck drive into a parking structure.
1960 - At the Alcatraz dock, the warden sees his deputy talking to a Board member and exchanging envelopes. The boat leaves and the warden asks the deputy warden why he asked him to come down here. The deputy gloats that he caught Stillman and just now switched back the envelope. The warden thanks his deputy and will put Stillman into solitary.
The warden walks Stillman to solitary and tells him how disappointed he is that Stillman failed him. Stillman asks the warden to check the envelope - its the one marked denied. He never made the original switch. He set-up the deputy warden, who actually did their work for them at the dock. Stillman explains the briefcase lock would have taken hours to pick.
CURRENT - They make it to the parking structure. Rebecca tells Soto to stay in the car. Soto eventually gets out and walks around. He finds a car that has been hotwired. Rebecca sees the three armored trucks parked together and they suddenly take off. Soto hides behind a pillar while Stillman heads toward the hotwired car with a large container. Stillman looks around as he loads the box and then drives away. Emerson catches up with Rebecca and tries to decide which truck Stillman escaped in. Soto gets there and tells them about the hotwired car, and that he hid his cellphone, with a GPS-tracker, in the back seat.
Stillman is at the Aire-Stream hammering at the container. He manages to open it. There is a metal container inside with an old skeleton key.
1960 - The warden is seeing off Simmons at the dock. He gives him a phone number of someone who will help Simmons re-adjust and to get back in contact with the warden when the time comes. As the boat leaves, the warden fingers a key like the one Stillman found.
CURRENT - A man Stillman recognizes as Ghost walks into the Aire-Stream and demands the key from Stillman. Stillman refuses, saying that he did not get the key for Ghost. Ghost shoots him.
They make it to the warehouse. Emerson and Rebecca bust in and find Stillman dead. Soto, sitting outside, sees a car pulling away and gets out to call for Rebecca. As the car inches closer, Soto is blinded by the headlights and cant see the driver. The car goes into reverse quickly and escapes. Soto thinks the driver was Stillmans handler.
Emerson gets a call from his tech, Warren, and runs off. On Alcatraz, they have found a door behind the wall. Emerson has two keys for the door, but when he turns them, a panel opens revealing another keyhole.
At the lab-prison, Lucy is asking Cobb why he shot her. He claims she is a target and she will always be one as long as she is alive.
Rebecca and Soto go through video from traffic cameras and find the car that raced past Soto. They isolate the driver and see that it is Tommy Madsen.
