The BBC’s Motherland universe is living on with a spin-off following a post-divorce Amanda.
One of Sharon Horgan’s hit show’s most popular characters, Amandaland will follow the protagonist (Lucy Punch) after her divorce, who has had to downsize and up sticks to South Harlesden, or as the Estate Agent calls it, SoHa.
Featuring her mother Felicity, played by British acting icon Joanna Lumley, Amanda has to try and get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety. After a brief spell of freedom, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school.

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

Maybe it’s because of its Emmy categorization in drama, but recently, there’s been a lot of discussion about “Succession” as though it’s not intentionally funny; as though the idea that it could be looked at as a comedy — albeit, a dementedly dark comedy — is preposterous. It tends to end up being compared to very clear-cut comedies, especially its cable network-mate, the terrific “The Righteous Gemstones,” in a way that describes those series as “the funny version of ‘Succession'”… as though “Succession” itself isn’t inherently the funny version of “Succession.”
“Succession” has always been a dark comedy masquerading as a prestige drama. HBO’s hourlong critical darling honestly has more in common with “Fleabag” or “Flowers” than it does “Ozark.” But that’s also because it’s specifically a dark British comedy conveniently masquerading as an American prestige drama.
Succession is just Arrested Development minus jokes.

Exclusive: Shining Vale, a half-hour horror-comedy from Divorce creator Sharon Horgan, Trial & Error co-creator Jeff Astrof and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, has landed at Starz with a pilot order.
The single-camera project, from Warner Bros. TV, where Astrof is under an overall deal, was originally set up at Showtime with a pilot production commitment. I hear the CBS-owned network greenlighted the script contingent on Catastrophe co-creator/co-lead Horgan starring. She was not available, and the project was put in turnaround with multiple outlets interested. I hear Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch was instrumental in bringing the comedy to the premium network. Starz’s sibling Lionsgate TV will co-produce with Warner bros. TV.
This is the third pilot for Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman this year, joining the animated Therapy Dog at Fox, starring Lisa Kudrow with Horgan among the voice cast, and Delilah at HBO Max, headlined by Jessica Rothe.

Cringe comedy isn’t for everyone, but the best forms of it — “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Comeback,” “Peep Show” — find a way to make the awkward situations their characters go through feel necessary. It helps make that discomfort relatable and cathartic for the audience.
The Sundance Now acquisition “Motherland” has the perfect set-up: What’s more socially awkward than the passive aggressive, gossip-filled, and cliquey world of parenting? Though creators Sharon Horgan (“Catastrophe”), Graham Linehan (“The It Crowd”), Helen Linehan, and Holly Walsh (“Dead Boss”) build this chaotic existence well, they also shoot themselves in the foot by making their main characters self-destructive instead of self-sustaining. They don’t survive the madness so much as they consciously perpetuate it and then complain about the problems they’ve created.

We couldn’t help but wonder: Will Sarah Jessica Parker‘s second HBO series be as popular as her first?
The Sex and the City star is officially re-teaming with the premium cabler, which greenlit her new comedy, Divorce, on Thursday, our sister site Deadline reports.
The actress will star in and executive produce the single camera comedy, which follows a married couple — Frances (Parker) and Robert (Wings‘ Thomas Haden Church) — through an extremely protracted uncoupling.

Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney's new Channel 4 sitcom Catastrophe is a deeply funny, down-to-earth look at relationships...
Sick of honey-sweet TV portrayals of relationships and hackneyed sitcom clichés about the drudgery of marriage, Sharon Horan (Pulling, Dead Boss, Free Agents) and stand-up Rob Delaney (Burning Love, Larry King, basically the king of Twitter) wrote and star in Catastrophe. It’s a deeply funny, down-to-earth story of two people whose strings-free hook-up is fast-tracked due to an unplanned pregnancy, and their attempts to stay their accelerated course.
Deftly balancing sharp humour with naturalistic performances and genuine warmth spiked by the odd disgusting moment, Catastrophe is a solid addition to Channel 4’s comedy line-up. We chatted to writer/actors Horgan and Delaney about avoiding schmaltz, working with Carrie Fisher, the influence of Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, and discover that Rob Delaney can’t pronounce the word ‘treacle’…

With the TV upfronts next week, the major networks are clearing house in time for the arrival of the new kids.
Following their series pickup of "Gotham" earlier this week, Fox has also given series orders for two more new dramas. One is the hospital set, Octavia Spencer-led, coming-of-age dramedy "Red Band Society".
The other is the hip-hop dynasty drama "Empire" with "Hustle and Flow" stars Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson re-teaming on the project.
The three new shows are coming at the cost of four others. The remake of the Aussie legal dramedy "Rake" and a trio freshman comedies "Dads," "Enlisted" and "Surviving Jack" have all been cancelled.
The axings follow in the wake of Fox's recent "Almost Human" cancellation. The network has also confirmed it will not be picking up new comedy pilots "Fatrick," "Dead Boss" and "No Place Like Home" to series.

“Rake” got the rake: the Greg Kinnear series was the fourth Fox show canceled on Wednesday. R.I.P. Dads, Enlisted, and Surviving Jack: Fox has confirmed that it won’t be ordering second seasons of any of those three first-year comedies. The network is also not moving forward with three comedies for which it had filmed pilots: Fatrick, Dead Boss, and writer Ricky Blitt’s No Place Like Home. But back to the cancellations. The death of Enlisted is not all shocking, give the network’s decision to bury season one on Fridays (and the resulting low ratings.) There had been some speculation that Fox execs were giving the show a serious second look, but as of now, it’s dead at Fox. Studio 20th Century Fox TV is expected to try to sell the series elsewhere. Meanwhile, Fox chief Kevin Reilly seemed to be laying the groundwork for a second year of Dads, telling Vulture and other outlets that he believed in multi-camera comedies...

Fox cleaned the comedy deck today, pulling the plug on freshman series Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack and passing on half-hour pilots Fatrick, Dead Boss and No Place Like Home. The two Fox comedy pilots that had been considered strongest, Sober Companion and Cabot College, remain in contention as Fox is said to be mulling a change in its comedy strategy for next season, likely abandoning the two-hour comedy block, which had been struggling mightily. On the hourlong side, there will be no second season for Rake though it has not been officially cancelled. Related: Fox Ups Order For Multi-Camera Comedy ‘Mulaney’ To 16 Episodes, May Be Done With Comedy Pickups The cancellation of Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack leaves Brooklyn Nine-Nine as the only freshman Fox comedy to make it to a second season. Time for a pair of casting notices that have nothing in common, but are still getting stuck together in one blog post just because: Jane Krakowski has landed the lead in Fox's comedy pilot "Dead Boss," while Jason Isaacs is set to topline USA's event series "Dig." More details below... "Dig" was picked up last week and will be a six-episode thriller from co-creators Tim Kring ("Heroes") and Gideon Raff ("Homeland"). Per USA, Isaacs will play an FBI agent stationed in Jerusalem who finds himself investigating the death of a young archeologist and uncovers an ancient conspiracy....

Rural juror Jane Krakowski has been cast in the Fox sitcom pilot Dead Boss, according to Deadline. The show is based on the British comedy of the same name, about a successful woman (Krakowski) who's wrongly convicted of murdering her boss and has to rely on her flaky younger sister to help get her out of jail. Also, everyone in jail hates her. Man, Orange Is the New Black is influencing things all over the place! Boss would be Krakowski's first regular TV gig since 30 Rock ended, assuming we don't include those depressing juice commercials.

Jenna Maroney rises again — well, sort of.
30 Rock star Jane Krakowski has been cast in the Fox pilot Dead Boss, based on the U.K. series.
Krakowski will play Helen Stephens, an overachieving, career-focused woman convicted of murdering her, you guessed it, boss, and is subsequently forced to rely on her train-wreck sister to help her out. Innocent of the crime and with work piling up on her desk, she is stunned by the guilty verdict — but remains optimistic that the whole mess will be straightened out shortly, according to the logline of the pilot.

30 Rock alumna Jane Krakowski has been tapped as the lead of Fox‘s half-hour pilot Dead Boss, from Warner Bros TV and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. An adaptation of the BBC3 series created by Sharon Horgan and Holly Walsh, Dead Boss is a comedic mystery that finds overachiever Helen Stephens (Krakowski) wrongfully convicted of murdering her boss and forced to rely on her train wreck of a sister to prove her innocence. The role was played by Horgan in the original series. Krakowski, who recently signed with Brillstein Entertainment, had been fielding multiple offers this pilot season following her seven-year run on 30 Rock, which earned her four Emmy nominations. I hear production of the Dead Boss pilot and potential series is being moved to New York where Krakowski is based.
