Woody as a villain

This little documentary short gives us a small glimpse into what could have been the first Toy Story film, displaying the more "adult", cynical tone Jeffrey Katzenberg demanded, allowing us to see a more villainous version of Woody (Evil laugh included) which treat the other toys (especially Slinky) as his minions rather than friends. (And the storyboard featured in the short ends with them rebelling against Woody and throwing him out of the window)

The poor reception this storyboard reel had almost caused the cancellation of the film, but fortunately (now without the influence of Katzenberg) the movie was reworked into the version we all known.

There are some traces of the the "edgier" version in the final film, which still has its fair share of black comedy compared with the rest movies from the series.

While the decision of turning Woody into a more likeable character was definitely good and ultimately paid off, I personally think the "edgy" version of Toy Story wasn't entirely bad, as some of the jokes were genuinely funny.

The key for Toy Story success was creating a good balance between the sarcastic humor and likeable, fun characters, resulting into a film the whole family could enjoy.

Definitely a harsh, but worthwhile experience for Pixar workers, which helped them to make many great films in the following years.
