The Present
Patrick and Gino come to Hannah's office and ask her about the blood samples she took on the night of the Ascension Bar fire, and the blood of sample she took who may be the Mai Tai Killer. Hannah says that her work is confidential, and Gino angrily says that the killer is preying on the gay community. She confirms that it isn't an official investigation, and Gino admits that they're investigating as concerned citizens. He show Hannah the sketch of the Killer and asks if she's seen him. Hannah sees the mark on Gino's arm and asks if he's had it checked out, and says that she's seen a similar mark on several of her patients. When Hannah realizes that they're partners, she suggests that they both get checked out. She still refuses to give up information without a warrant, and gives them her card if they want a checkup.
Patrick goes to his station and finds several of the men glaring at him. Mulcahey tells Patrick that he got a call that Hannah called him about Patrick being there and implying that one of their staff is the killer. Patrick says that he did nothing of the store and that his partner should go back to working behind his back, and Mulcahey angrily replies that Patrick doesn't know anything and walks off.
Frankie Del Rios calls Patrick and says that he lives on Fire Island, and that he and his friend heard that Patrick was gay. He and his friend found a body on the beach, it looks like it had been there a while, and it was wearing a leather mask. Patrick confirms that Frankie hasn't told anyone else, and tells him not to.
Sam is at his apartment supervising two works unpacking one of his sculptures. Patrick calls Sam and tells him that they have a problem, and two guys found the body on Fire Island.
Henry meets with a mobster, Angelo DeMarco, in the park, who shows him an article by Gino about the murders. Angelo says that Gino is stirring up trouble with the police, and the police need their help so they continue doing favors for the Mob. He tells Henry that it falls on him, and they don't care how he does it but he needs to make Gino disappear.
Patrick goes back to the apartment and packs for his trip to Fire Island. Gino offers to go with him, and Patrick tells him that he doesn't want to make a scene out of it because he's outside his jurisdiction, and the Killer may have killed someone on Fire Island. His lover wonders if he's cheating on him, and Patrick tells Gino not to be a jealous partner. Gino secretly follows Patrick and watches Sam pick him up, and Gino goes back to his apartment and finds Henry waiting for him. When Gino wonders why Henry is there, Henry draws a gun and points it at him, and says that he works for the Mob, and Gino's articles are making the wrong people unhappy. Henry says that if it doesn't stop, he'll have to kill Gino and he doesn't want to. Gino tells Henry that the killer has moved on to Fire Island and they found a new body there.
On Fire Island, Patrick and Sam meet with Frankie and his partner, Tom. Sam claims that he's a cop and tells them to go. Once the two men do, Sam and Patrick go into the nearby house that Sam owns, and Sam wonders what they were thinking burying the body in a shallow sand dune. Patrick figures that it was probably the drugs they were using at the time.
The two men go down to the beach and find the body, and Patrick says that they need to scatter the remains further and bury them deeper. Henry and Gino walk up and Gino wonders what's going on. He wonders if Patrick killed Barbara, and Patrick tells him that it was a freak accident that shouldn't have happened. Patrick finally explains that the house is Sam's, and he met Sam there the first time he came to Fire Island..
1979
Patrick arrives on Fire Island and Sam, walking by, invites him to the party at his house. Billy is with Sam, and joins Patrick as they go to the house, and Patrick came to the island so he could be himself. He and Billy link up, and Sam notices and gives them coke. He danced with them and kissed Billie, and when night fell, Sam took them to the stocks he had in his basement and asks for someone to volunteer to be the "special one". Billy says that he'll do it, and Sam kisses him and then puts a black leather mask on Billy and puts him in the stocks. Sam then kisses Patrick, they both take coke, and Patrick then takes Billy from behind. Watching, Sam realizes something is wrong, stops Patrick, and unfastens the stocks. Billy's corpse falls to the ground, and Patrick administers CPR trying to revive him. Sam grabs a gun, points it at Patrick, and tells him to stop.
Patrick wants to call the police, and says he is police. Sam is shocked, and demands to know why Patrick didn't tell him. He then says that Billy consented to it, and Sam says he knows someone who is a fixer for the Mob. He calls Henry, who arrives shortly and says that it will cost them $10,000 for his help. Whitely comes in and Henry says that he's his "associate", and a whiz at cutting up bodies. When Whitely says that the others were criminals but Billy is innocent, Henry slaps him and orders him to get to work or he'll call Whitely's mother and tell her about her son's sexuality.
Sam and Patrick go out because they can't watch it. Whitely puts the mask on Billy's head, lies out a plastic sheet, then started cutting with the blades he brought. He stops to admire the body, and tells Henry that the corpse is so beautiful, and deserved better.
The Present
Patrick finishes telling his story, and tells Gino that they should go home. Sam asks Gino to help them, and Patrick tells Sam that Gino isn't helping. Henry points out that either Gino becomes an accomplice or he publishes the story in The Native, and Gino tells Patrick that he can't call the cops because Patrick is involved so he's stuck.
Looking at the bones, Patrick realizes that whoever cut up the body has the same technique as the Mai Tai Killer, and asks Henry who it was. When Gino insists, Henry says that Whitely is a male nurse, and the man who cut up the body. Henry tells them that they have no proof that Whitely is the killer, and Gino tells Henry that he can see his face and ID him. Patrick warns Gino that Whitely would recognize him right away, while Sam irritably tells them that they should deal with the issue at hand. Gino says that he and Henry will go on their own, and tells Patrick that he's turn him in if he had any integrity. Patrick insists that Gino take his gun, and Gino reluctantly does.
Back at the Ferry, Henry calls Whitely at home and gets his answering machine. He then calls Whitely at the hospital basement, gets answer from the man, and tells him he has another job for him. Whitely says that he's busy and can't come, and Henry reminds him that he doesn't have a choice. The killer gives in and Henry says that he can't give him a location so he'll pick Whitely up, and needs his address. Whitely directs Henry to a bar that night, and after he hangs up, Henry tells Gino that Whitely suspects and once they pick Whitely up and Gino identifies him, they'll kill him immediately. Gino refuses to kill whitely, and Henry explains that Gino will hold Whitely at gunpoint, they'll drive him to the docks, and then Henry will finish him off.
That night, the two men drive to the bar and spot Whitely's car parked outside. Henry goes in to get Whitely, and finds him at the bar drinking a Mai Tai. Whitely says that they should catch up over a drink before they head out.
Outside, Gino gets into the backseat.
Henry tells Whitely that the Mob wants a couple of debtors killed, and why is none of their business. Whitely goes to use the restroom, and after a minute Henry draws his gun and goes into the restroom. There's no sign of Whitely, and Henry checks the stalls. Whitely grabs him from behind, chokes him semiconscious, and takes him out pretending that Henry is drunk. Gino sees Whitely take Henry out to Whitely's car and drive off, and then Gino gets behind the wheel and follows them.
Whitely takes Gino into his apartment, and Gino gets out and goes to a nearby payphone. He calls Patrick and tells him that the killer has Henry, and that Gino needs Patrick.
