Adam walks up to Hannah's and finds it cordoned off by the police. He asks an onlooker what's going on, and she tells him that the landlord smelled something coming out of the apartment, went in, and found a body. The EMTs take a covered body out on a gurney, and Adam convinces the police to let him in. The detective in charge is looking at the apartment, and Adan says that Hannah was the mother of his child. The man offers his condolences and says that Hannah apparently died of natural causes. He asks if Hannah had any known medical issues, Adam says that Hannah had a low red cell count but nothing to worry about, and he asks for a moment alone.
Once the police leave, Adam finds a tape player and plays it. Hannah talks about how the deer on Fire Island are repopulating and the rangers can't understand it given the recent culling, and she can't either. Adam breaks into tears, and Big Daddy stands nearby and watches him.
Adam takes notes from the tape, and on it Hannah coughs and wonders how the virus replicates so quickly. She apparently collapses according to the sounds on the tape, and Adam listens to the sounds repeatedly. He talks to the coroner, and says that Hannah apparently died of a heart attack. Adam suspects that Hannah was attacked, and the coroner says that there were no signs of a struggle. She asks Adam why he didn't tell his suspicions to the police, and he merely tells her that he has his reasons. The coroner says that she's only talking to him as a favor to Patrick, and insists that there are no way that the deaths of Hannah and Theo are related, and he also die of natural causes: a lung infection caused by a fungus. The reports says that he was hanging up by his arms for hours, and the infection took hold in his lungs. The coroner tells Adam that Theo apparently didn't suffer, and he died of infection. She insists that there were no signs of foul play, and neither she nor anyone else will see how the two deaths are related.
Adam continues listening to the tapes. Hannah talks about how she used a turkey baster to inseminate herself with Adam's semen seven months ago, and that's when she started showing symptoms. She says that her lab results are mirroring the symptoms of Adam and her other gay patients, and she figures that the disease is sexually transmitted.
Adam remembers having sex with a man in the park, who turns into Big Daddy.
Hannah wonders how she's going to tell Adam.
Adam goes to a bar and drinks. The next day, he goes to see a doctor and has him check Adam for infections. The doctor finds lesions on Adams' back, and Adam says that he knows that it's Kaposi's Sarcoma. Adam tells the doctor that it's a new disease and the doctor has to tell the medical community and put them on high alert. The doctor tells Adam that he can't do it on his say-so, and the results of his testing will come back in seven to ten days. Adam figures that the test results will prove what he's saying is right.
Adam goes back to Hannah's apartment and continues listening to the tapes. On them, Hannah says that the deer aren't the source of the disease, and she's confirmed that some of what Fran said about the experiments on Plum Island is true, even though Hannah doesn't think Fran's claim of weaponized ticks is in any way true. However, there's been an outbreak of cases in Lyme and the Rocky Mountains, and the doctors there suspect that the deer ticks are the actual carriers. She doesn't think the ticks are the source of the outbreak, which started on Fire Island.
Adam goes to the Native office and makes photocopies of a flyer telling men to use condoms. He goes to Kathy's dressing room and tells him that he's there on a matter of public health. She says that they've been cleaning the place but the patrons are still going to sex. Adam gives her flyers and asks her to put them up, and asks her to hand out condoms from a box he's brought. Kathy says that her last show is that night, and it doesn't feel safe around there. She talks about how she should have retired years ago, but held onto her dream. However, it's gone now and her dream is over. Kathy tells him to go with God, but she's closing shop. As Adam goes, she tells him that he shouldn't forget how to live.
Adam puts up the flyers all over the community, then gets on the subway and takes a seat. A pregnant woman sits across from him, and the lights go out. The homeless woman sits down the car, then when the lights go out, appears next to Adam and says that she told him. The next time the lights briefly go out, she disappears, leaving a newspaper with a story that a rare cancer has been found in 41 gay men.

Gino goes to a pharmacy as Big Daddy lurks in the background. The pharmacist calls Gino up, and he buys AZT then walks down the street, remembering when Patrick was with him. He goes to the funeral home and tries to offer his condolences to Patrick's mother, but she turns away him. The coffin is closed and Gino angrily opens it, yelling that Patrick wanted people to face what happened to him. Patrick jerks awake, and Adam wakes Patrick up from his hallucination, where nothing really happened to him at Patrick's coffin. Adam tells Gino that they need to start the service, and everyone sits down.
Gino sets up front and reads what he wrote for Patrick's eulogy. The lights flicker and he sees Big Daddy in the back. All the men present turn and look at Patrick, who finds himself in a cemetery with the men, who are now wearing masks. Big Daddy is digging a grave, and the men march into the grave.
The years pass, and Gino finds himself among men protesting no one finding a cure for AIDS. Gino remembers being at home with Patrick, telling him that he's safe. Patrick told him that they're not safe, and Gino continues writing about the AIDS epidemic while Big Daddy guns down his staff. He goes to a bar and imagines Whitely there, buying him a mai tai and then Big Daddy cuts Whitely's throat. Gino goes back to drinking mai tais. A man orders him drinks and they go back to Gino's apartment for sex, but Gino starts coughing and goes into the bathroom to get water. Meanwhile, Big Daddy throws blood from a bucket on Gino's partner. Gino returns to the bedroom to find blood on all over the bed, but no sign of his new lover.
Gino continues writing, and a man tries to pick him up. Big Daddy comes up and breaks the man's life, then kills the other men in the bar who Gino imagines having sex with each other, then he goes home and finds blood on the floor. He opens the front door and finds Big Daddy and slams the door shut.
The death count continues to mount over the years, and Gino continues writing. He treats the lesions on his arms as Big Daddy looks on, and takes more medicine. Gino goes to the cemetery where the bodies in the grave pile up, and he looks at them. Over the years, Gino gets more ill and more men pass him, wearing masks. Big Daddy is waiting for Gino, and Gino ends up on a bed gasping for breath. At the cemetery, Gino finally falls into the grave, while in the bedroom he looks up and finds Patrick waiting for him in the light.
Adam goes to Gino's funeral and looks at Gino's body. He places a saint's medal on Gino's hand, then gets up and tries to speak, but can't find the words.
