It doesn’t take much to get a TV show canceled — a lack of viewership and no trophies on the mantle usually gets it done in the current environment. Many people have some downtime in the next few days — perhaps downtime spent with family, perhaps downtime spent on a solo mission. Either way, it's time best spent watching TV. Here are some of the best ways to cure your TV cravings over the holidays. I like doctor shows. You need NY Med (eight episodes, Hulu). The documentary series is a clear-eyed look at doctors, nurses, and patients at various points in the treatment process: Sometimes we see trauma patients in the ER, sometimes residents getting chewed out between shifts, sometimes patients coming in for a nerve-wracking follow-up. Previous incarnations (Hopkins 24/7, Boston Med) had a wider variety of outcomes, but NY Med is still riveting. Unfortunately, Dr. Oz is on this show, but he's performing surgeries, not shilling for fraudulent weight-loss supplements.I want more Hunger Games. Oh, and Battlestar Galactica. So does the rest of America. Try The 100...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, August 14, 2014. NBC got a big bump for the season finale of "Last Comic Standing," but still couldn't top CBS, which rode a strong "Big Brother" performance to Thursday wins in all measures. Fox's "Gang Related" finale was also up from last week, though last week's numbers were depressed by NFL preemptions and "Gang Related" was closer to flat with recent regular airings. And over on ABC, "The Quest" dropped a little in the key demo, "NY Med" was flat and "Rookie Blue" was up a hair. Since ABC had the NFL preseason preemption in Chicago, adjust expectations accordingly. [NBC had the NFL preemption in Jacksonville, but... come on. That's not causing a big impact. Sorry, Jaguars fans.] On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 1.4 rating for Thursday night, tops in the key demographic. NBC was a close second with a 1.3 key demo rating, topping ABC's 0.9 key demo rating. Fox's 0.6 key demo rating and the 0.2 key demo rating for The CW followed.

Fast National ratings for Thursday, August 7, 2014. A "Big Bang Theory" repeat and a new "Big Brother" led CBS' rout on Thursday night, though the network had NFL preemptions for 22 percent of the country, which probably helped more than a little. With preemptions or delays taking over such markets as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, CBS' numbers will certainly change -- "Mom" repeats tend not to do 2.0 key demo ratings -- but it probably won't matter in terms of the bottom line of Thursday rankings. Meanwhile, there were some positive grace notes to Thursday's ratings, with small bumps for "Gang Related," "Working the Engels." There are NFL-based reasons for those bumps as well and there may also be, I suppose, an NFL-based explanation for the flat numbers for "The Quest" and "Rookie Blue." The NFL ruins everything. These ratings are concussed. In addition, several networks had preemptions and...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, July 31, 2014. With "Big Brother" and a "Big Bang Theory" repeat leading the way, CBS scored its regular Thursday wins in all measures. The night's big notable was ABC's "The Quest," which got off to a soft start, particularly among male viewers. Fast National ratings for Thursday, July 24, 2014. Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" failed to get a big finale bump and also failed to help the network upset the normal Thursday order. The night also saw very small audience bumps for all of NBC's originals, though "Hollywood Game Night," "Welcome to Sweden," "Working the Engels" and "Last Comic Standing." Also flat? "Gang Related" was one of the night's only shows to even be flat among young viewers and gained slightly overall, even more impressive since "Hell's Kitchen" was down in all measures. "Rookie Blue" was up from last week in total viewers, but down a hair in the key demo. ABC's "NY Med" slipped a bit in its second week, as did NBC's "Undateable" in its finale. Let's get to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, CBS averaged a 1.2 rating for Thursday night, topping the 1.1 rating for Fox in the key demographic.

For the second night in a row, CBS's reality show “Big Brother” handed the network a win in both the key 18-49 demographic and total viewers on Thursday. Meanwhile, ABC's “NY Med” scored its most-watched episode ever, according to preliminary numbers. CBS took first place Thursday in the demo with a 1.5 rating and in total viewers with 5.7 million. “Big Brother” at 8 p.m. was the night's top program, scoring a 2.3 rating — even with Wednesday night's season premiere and up marginally from last season's Night Two. Fast National ratings for Thursday, June 26, 2014. The 16th installment of "Big Brother" had a second straight strong premiere night for CBS, delivering Thursday's best numbers among young viewers and combining with a "Big Bang Theory" repeat to help CBS win overall as well. Thursday's overall race was at least somewhat close because ABC got a good audience -- a series hight, in fact -- for the return of "NY Med," which made a solid overall block with "Rookie Blue," even if demo numbers for both shows are week. Among other Thursday notables, "Last Comic Standing" is slipping for NBC after a promising start, while Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" and "Gang Related," plus NBC's "Undateable" all slipped a hair among young viewers. Big Brother is doing more than holding up. On Thursday, night two of CBS’ reality veteran matched its Wednesday premiere in the ratings, plus built even more upon its comparable opening last summer—viewership was up 10 percent from last year.
Big Brother had 6.6 million viewers and a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49, easily ruling the night (check out Katie Atkinson’s recap here). That trounced ABC’s Rookie Blue (0.8) and Fox’s Gang Related (also 0.8). At 10 p.m., ABC premiered hospital documentary series NY Med (3.9 million, 0.9), which was pretty modest, yet won the hour.

Among the purest forms of television joy is a good episode of a good doctor show. Hospital shows, doctor shows — the drama and stakes are built right in, and the doctors and nurses are inherently valorous while the patients are inherently vulnerable. NY Med, ABC's documentary series that returns for its second season tonight, plays along with those familiar ideas, but with the rare kind of urgency and intimacy that can feel forced in a scripted drama and that are hard to expose in an unscripted format. The series is emotionally rich and compelling, and its subjects range from interesting to incredibly interesting, but NY Med's real strength is its candor.NY Med's first incarnation was the 2000 miniseries Hopkins 24/7, which is one of my favorite shows of all time. That show set up the style and tone of the subsequent iterations: The show zooms in and out of...

If you're in an emergency room and think you're about to die, maybe your last wish should be that Dr. Mehmet Oz passes through. It happens to a young man — writhing in agony after his aorta tears — on Thursday's season premiere of NY Med (June 26, 10/9c, ABC). Oz is back in action in the eight-part summer series from ABC News that takes viewers on an emotionally intense journey through New York-Presbyterian and other Manhattan-based hospitals. It's been two years since the premiere of NY Med, and since then, producer Terence Wrong (Boston Med and many other medical documentaries) has been busy collating and weaving together stories for the show's second season. Though the focus remains on the ER staff of New York-Presbyterian — a teaching hospital that allows for a great variety of stories (regarding both patients and doctors) — this second season has expanded to include Newark's University Hospital, which brings in a very different set of cases. Like the first season, NY Med will run a restricted eight episodes, each seemingly positioned

It used to be that summer was a desolate wasteland, at least when it came to original television. The networks, like teachers, pretty much took the season off and cable was still in its infancy, struggling to find a way to quench that particular thirst. But these days, summer is just as viable for original programming as the fall and midseason, and this year is no different.
We've decided to run down the biggest premieres from the hottest networks (in alphabetical order), making sure to note the starriest, sexiest, most interesting new and returning programs for you to watch at the end of a long, hot summer day.
