- Revealing doors are opened and lives hang in the balance as Rebecca will stop at nothing in pursuit of the man who killed her partner.
- CURRENT - Rebecca Madsen lies about 50 feet from a burning, flipped-over car. She is grabbing her side and wincing in pain.
36 HOURS EARLIER - Rebecca is at Rays, meeting with her old captain. She tells him her new job is on a task force investigating organized crime and she thinks the person who killed her partner Will Peters, has a central part in it. The captain reveals that Peters was under an IA investigation - receiving suspicious payments from Broadway Mutual. It was never determined if these were bribes.
Joe Limerick rushes into a psychiatric hospital and demands protection. He claims he is a prisoner from Alcatraz and that bad people are after him. He meets with a doctor and is given a room. Once there, he pulls out and admires the key he took from Stillman.
1960 - Limerick is in his cell shivering. He is huddled under a blanket and appears to be soaked. They had just brought him back from an escape attempt. He made it off the island but a riptide carried him back. In the next cell, his neighbor, Madsen, tells Limerick that everyone believes Limerick died in the escape attempt and the warden has even filled in a death certificate. He says this makes Limerick a ghost.
In a dark room, Madsen is strapped to an exam table and asks the warden if they are taking more blood. The warden says that today, they are giving blood back. A scientist-type man comes in and hooks Madsen up for a transfusion. As the blood enters, Madsen writhes in pain.
CURRENT - Madsen has broken into a house. The man of the house is asleep on the coach and Madsen pistol whips him. As Madsen asks where his wife is, we see a little girl watching the whole process, and then running away just before Madsen can see her. He orders the man to text his wife to come home immediately. In the background, we see the little girl running across their back yard.
CREDITS
CURRENT - At the lab-prison, Dr. Milton Beauregard is taking Dr. Lucy Singuptas blood pressure. She wonders, sarcastically, if now that she has Porters blood if she can now play the violin. She asks if Dr. Beauregard knows why they are putting silver in the prisoners blood and why some have it and some don't. He says he does not know and that he thought she knew because she was close to the warden. She asks if the silver can be isolated from the blood and he assures her that hes already been trying.
Emerson is watching a tape of Lucys interview with Cobb (the one where he calls her a target). She concludes that no one is safe as long as these men keep coming back. Emerson says they should limit her exposure to the returned prisoners. She asks why he doesn't just keep her in one of his cells. Emerson gets a text that they may have a connection to Tommy Madsen.
A good Samaritan has brought the little girl into the local precinct. A police sketch indicates that the intruder might be Tommy Madsen. The girl hasn't spoken since she arrived and cannot give a name or an address. The tech pieced together the sketch by showing the girl a catalog of facial features. Rebecca goes into the interrogation room with Dr. Diego Soto and his drawing pad. They get her to talk and she recognizes Tommy from a photograph.
1960 - Madsen wakes up in a Nob Hill hotel - a room with a view of Alcatraz. The warden comes in with room service. Madsen is surprised he survived whatever they were doing to him with the blood - In fact he feels very good. The warden tells him its for potential -- the great things he can do for Madsen and the great things Madsen can do for him. The warden tells him to change clothes; they're going for a walk.
CURRENT - When Soto draws a house, Rebecca tells the little girl that the house needs a number. She blurts out her address.
At the darkened house, Madsen is waiting patiently in the front room. The man has slipped out of his ties and is struggling to get his gun from a safe under his bed. The wife comes home. Madsen holds a gun at her head. The man comes down the staircase and starts shooting.
When Rebecca and Emerson get there, the man is wounded on the staircase and Madsen and his wife are gone. The man says Madsens intention was to take the wife. He thinks he hit Madsen with a bullet.
The wife is sewing up a flesh-wound in Madsens thigh. She recommends they go to a doctor but Madsen laughs and says she just needs to close the wound; that it would heal.
CURRENT - Emerson meets with a man dressed in camo in a private jet. He asks the man to arrange a meeting with Harlan Simmons. The man says its not possible. Emerson says that Madsen is out again and has his sights set on Simmons. Emerson wants to meet with Simmons to find out why. The man says that arranging such a meeting is out of his pay-grade, and in fact, even the President cant do it. He gives Emerson an envelope of documents that Emerson had requested, including a passport for Lucy. The man offers Lucy a seat on the plane they are taking on a mission to Paraguay. Emerson says Paraguay would be difficult for him now because he would have to stay with Lucy until she has at least settled down. The man gives Emerson the order to brief his Alcatraz team.
Back at the dungeon, Lucy and Soto are trying to find all they can about the wife. So far they've determined that Madsen was Stillmans handler; that Madsen used Stillman to get the key from Simmons; that since Madsen needs the wife, that she must be connected to Simmons; and that Rebeccas partner is also connected to Simmons.
Emerson comes back and calls Rebecca and Soto into his part of dungeon. He shows them two keys, one from Cal Sweeney and the one Jack Sylvane took from Barkley Flynn. Emerson shows a video feed to where his techs are working on the door. Emerson thinks the keys belong to the warden and that Madsen is working for the warden.
Soto sees a machine which Emerson explains detects thermal and seismic activity. Emersons tech says that the jump in 1963 may have coincided with such activity. Soto asks why Emerson is telling them all this now and Emerson confesses that he may have to go way for a few days. Rebecca asks if his departure involves Lucy, and Emerson confesses that he has to take her some place safe. Lucy has overheard this - she had not known of what Emersons plans. Lucy has information about the wife - she works at a hospital owned by Broadway Mutual. A recent retinal scan at the hospital sent a signal to their computers.
We see Madsen leading the wife through the hospital at gunpoint.
1960 - The warden and Madsen are in a small Italian restaurant. The warden is amused because he had offered to take Madsen anywhere but Madsen chose this. Madsen explains he met his wife here. The warden asks Madsen to pretend hes a genie and to ask him anything he would want for a perfect day. Madsen does not answer him, only staring at a young family at the next table.
CURRENT - Madsen pushes the wife into a room and he demands to know where he is. As he rummages through the desk, Joe Limerick walks in (its Joes room) and they are both surprised to see each other. Madsen asks Limerick for the key. Limerick bolts. Madsen grabs the wife and runs after Limerick.
CURRENT - At the lab-prison, Dr. Beauregard is showing Lucy the results of his research. The silver emits some sort of frequency like a homing signal. Because it binds to the platelets, Lucy will always have it in her blood. He asks if she will accompany Emerson and she is hesitant because he (Emerson) is not the same man she fell in love with -- part of him is missing.
1960 - The warden and Madsen are in Oakland, watching a young boy play in his yard. The warden assumes they are there because the boy is Madsens son. Madsen goes to the gate and calls to Ben. Ben runs into the house and Madsen looks distraught. He comes back to the warden and says, I know what I want from you.
CURRENT - Limerick is trapped in a dead end in a hallway full of locked doors. Madsen, dragging the wife, holds a gun on him as Limerick swears he does not have the key and that hell kill me. Madsen promises not to shoot him, and he promises to protect him from Simmons. Limerick says that's impossible, spins and jumps out the third floor window.
Rebecca, Emerson and Soto arrive and when she looks up, she sees Madsen looking down at her. She runs in and chases Madsen, but he has jumped down the laundry chute to the garage and has hot-wired a car. She runs out and commandeers a Mustang.
1960 - Madsen is in an interrogation room. Ray comes in Madsen orders him to leave Alcatraz. Ray is worried that the warden will find out his relationship to Madsen, thus spoiling their plans. All Madsen does is hand him an envelope. It has adoption papers for Ben. Ray reminds Madsen of their original plan to get Madsen back to Ben, including ingratiating himself to the warden. Ray thinks that the warden will help them just as he just helped Harlan Simmons. Madsen confesses to killing his wife, Bens mom. Madsen tells Ray that his termination papers are also in that envelope. Ray takes the envelope, wondering how Madsen could go through with this since hell never see his Ben again.
CURRENT - Madsen sees Rebecca following him and takes off. A prolonged chase takes place that is very similar to the one in Bullitt (1968) (she does drive a Mustang) going up and down the streets of San Francisco with both cars passing a slow moving VW.
Emerson escorts the wife out and she tells him about the key. He asks if Madsen got the key but they are interrupted when the little girl, her daughter, shows up. Lucy shows up as well and asks about the patient Madsen was visiting. When Soto hears it was Joe Limerick, he says that Limerick is dead (meaning in that 1960 escape attempt), which is obvious to Emerson, because Limerick is lying under a sheet in a pool of blood and broken glass a few feet away from them. Emerson pats down the body and cant find the key. Soto recalls a trick inmates used to keep contraband from the guards and finds the key in the cuff of Limericks pants. Soto pockets the key and says Emerson will get it when they find Rebecca, and then they will all go to open the door. Emerson pulls his gun on Soto, but Lucy calms him down.
Rebecca causes Madsen to flip his car and it catches on fire. She runs over and pulls Madsen out of the car. They make it to a safe distance just as the car explodes. She pulls her gun on him. He says she doesn't need to use the gun because her father was his son; that he is her grandfather. But she scoffs because he thinks that makes them family. He guesses she wants to know why he killed her partner. He explains that the partner was being paid to keep eyes on her. She tells him she knows about Broadway Mutual and asks why. Madsen says that Simmons wanted to get to Madsen, to all of us. She asks why Simmons would care and Madsen explains that Simmons broke a promise to the warden; that the warden is behind all this.
Madsen asks Rebecca what her parents were like. He also wonders if Ray ever told her how they died; how they really died. At that, he whips around and stabs her in the abdomen. He takes her gun and drives off in the Mustang.
Soto drives up and sees Rebecca writhing on the ground.
CURRENT - They are at the hospital. Emerson whispers to Lucy that this is why she has to leave; Lucy says this is why she has to stay. She says they (she and Emerson) wont be separated again. He says he wont lose her for a third time. She reminds him they've been separated for 50 years, and by a bullet to her heart, so what else can possibly come between them.
Ray storms in and asks who did this. Emerson tells him it was Madsen and Ray reminds Emerson that he told him this would happen. Ray sees Lucy and remembers her from Alcatraz. He calls her one of them.
As Emerson and Lucy leave, Soto hands over the key. Emerson invites him to the opening. Soto says staying there is more important.
In the deep dungeon, Emerson and Lucy are walking around with flashlights. He opens the locks and the cavernous room is empty except for debris and old equipment. He finds a breaker box and turns on the electricity. He uncovers some control panels. There is a map of the US on the wall with numbered magnets throughout the country. They were used to mark the locations of the prisoners with silver in their blood.
1960 - The scientist who gave Madsen his re-injection is hovering over the map with a print out of everywhere the warden had taken Madsen earlier in the day. The warden reintroduces the scientist to Madsen, who demands to know how they knew he would survive their experiment. The scientist says hes had his eye on Madsen since 1952. Madsen asks if the scientist was also in Korea but he does not respond. The scientist says that three years from now, Madsen will be out in world, but when Madsen asks, Free? the scientist only scoffs.
CURRENT - Emerson and Lucy hear a sound in the back of the room and go to investigate. There is a man lying among the debris - the scientist. He wakes and at first calls Emerson Madsen. He then asks what year it is, and when Emerson tells him, he breaks into cackling laughter.
Despite the efforts of the trauma staff, Rebecca flat-lines.
