According to Kris Theorin, the film was created primarily as a way to improve how he built and rendered human character. Great care was taken to refine the textures and shaders for human skin and Unreal's Metahuman assets were used extensively to achieve this.
This was the longest film he's ever had to render according to director Kris Theorin. While the total production time for the film was around four months, a whole month of that time was just to render and re-render many scenes from the film. With the average frame taking around ten minutes to complete on a handful of GPUs.
The candy bar "Kaboom Bars" can be seen prominently in many shots throughout the film. This is one of several fake products seen throughout the film. Kaboom Bars are a fictional brand created by writer Kurtis Theorin almost 12 years ago.
The film was reworked by the director in order to be "Krampus but with Lucky Charms." The mascot was given an ancient appearance and the method of which he was summoned was adjusted to feel more like summoning a demon.
Unlucky Charms was completed primarily by one person. Kris Theorin handled all the modeling, animation, lighting, texturing, editing, compositing, and sound design. Some pre-made models were used for the interior of the store so not everything had to be modeled from scratch. The music and voice acting was also done by other people.
