- In the wake of the attack, Cara and the Duttons carefully plan heir next move. Spencer and Alexandra enjoy the pleasure of Zanzibar, unaware of what has happened back home. Banner Creighton seeks a powerful ally.
- The result of the rifle ambush by the sheep farmers is severe. Jacob is bedridden with multiple gunshot wounds. Jack and Elizabeth face struggles in their relationship. Elizabeth's mother, Beverly, wants to take her back east, but Elizabeth wants to stay and marry Jack. Cara tells Beverly that Elizabeth will decide what her life will be, not her. With so many of his allies dead, Creighton is short of manpower. He meets with the mining magnate Donald Whitfield to gain support for his war against the Dutton family. In exchange for money to hire himself an army, he tells Whitfield that the mineral rights to the Yellowstone Ranch will be long to him when he takes it over. Creighton and his cronies rustle a bunch of cattle on an outlying piece of land. Jack is ready to go after them. Jacob counsels them to let go of the stock. That they can rebuild and seek retaliation when Spencer gets home. Cara ask that the foreman take a letter she has written to Spencer to be mailed. He is instructed to not say a word about the situation to the sheriff. An upcoming stockmen's meeting is expecting Jacob to be there to run it. Since Jacob cannot even sit up in bed, he tells Cara to take over leadership. Cara represents Jacob at a meeting of local cattle owners and convinces the cattlemen to agree to the Dutton's plan which will allow them to control the fate of those who trespass on their grazing lands and steal their livestock. After incessant abuse from Sister Mary, Teonna finally kills her and also Sister Alice before fleeing the school. IN Zanzibar, Spencer grows closer to his fiancée Alexandria. One night, Alex finds a stack of letters that Spencer has carefully saved. She thinks they are from a former girlfriend and asks about them. He tells her they are from his Aunt Cara. He never read them because they would bring up memories of home that he didn't want to hear. Alex begins to read them, and Spencer tells her to continue. She gets to the last one in which Cara writes of the range war that is in progress and a plea to come home. Spencer asks when it was posted. "Three months ago, " she replies.—Garon Smith
