"Midori no Neko", also called "The Green Cat", is a fantasy/mystery-anime from 1983 directed by Osamu Tezuka, and runs for around 24 minutes. This anime was based on a story written for the Manga series "Lion Books" made in Japan in the 1950s. It was the first attempt to be made as an OVA in the Japanese anime industry, more of it later.
Basic plot: This anime follows Ban Shunsaku, who has worked at a shop in the US together with his friend Yushi. One day he witnessed Yushi getting killed by a gang, and had to take Yushi's son Sango with him.
Now as a private detective in Japan, Ban discovers Sango having begotten possessed by a green cat, which is actually a space creature killing any people who comes in contact with the cat.
In my opinion, this anime wasn't bad at all. The storytelling in it was a little bit original compared to many other anime OVAs of the 80s I've seen; it is not often you get to see a green cat as an evil creature. Even a few people could clearly be seen getting killed in some graphic way. How characters were being drawn was very typical Osamu Tezuka, especially the characters Ban and Sango.
As I said earlier, this anime was the first attempt to be released in Japan as a OVA (Original Video Animation). But due to the lack of evidence of it's release date, Mamoru Oshii's "Dallos" became the first OVA to be officially released. And since then lots of anime OVAs were getting made for sale in Japan, more of it in my review for "Dallos".
In 2003, this anime has been re-released on Japanese DVD, on the same disc as an another anime short called "Rain Boy", also directed by Osamu Tezuka. Unfortunately in Norway, this anime simply doesn't exist.
Recommended if you like watching fantasy/mystery anime in general. My overall rating is 8/10.
