The Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival, taking place in seven cities in Poland from Friday to May 19 and then online from May 21 to July 3, has grown exponentially in the last few years. In fact it is now, as the people behind it proclaim, the largest film festival in Poland.
Artistic director Karol Piekarczyk explains, “There is a culture of watching films and of watching films with subtitles in Poland. There are a lot of arthouse cinemas, in comparison to the U.K. for example. Even in small cities.”
Piekarczyk has worked for the festival for the past seven years and this edition will be his fourth as artistic director. He sees his job as “reminding everyone that our priority is and has always been the audience. However, we are a documentary festival, and whether we like it or not, audiences mainly choose films based on topic. We as programmers focus more on the quality.

Mubi’s May 2024 (streaming) lineup embraces their latest (theatrical) coup with a Radu Jude program. In addition to Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World arriving May 3, the Romanian director is highlighted with a six-film program launching on May 10. Lee Chang-dong and Bertrand Bonello are each given two-title highlights. While most of us can’t be at Cannes (I guess that’s a pun), the festival’s greatest tradition, booing, is celebrated with Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, and Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco. Among new releases, Al Warren’s Dogleg and the Ross brothers’ Gasoline Rainbow are notable selections.
As Lee Chang-dong recently told us in an extended interview, “Experiences in my life are what shaped me as a filmmaker, as obvious as that sounds. My artistic taste was shaped by the mountains and fields of my childhood village,...

Exclusive: The ancient Scottish town of St Andrews was hit with a heavy bout of Spidey fever this past weekend as the third annual Sands International Film Festival opened, pulling in an eclectic set of films, filmmakers, and speakers alongside one popular guest of honor.
Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, also known for The Impossible, Cherry, and The Devil All the Time passed through the fest, which opened with a screening of Last Call, a short project he leads with Lindsay Duncan (Blackbird) that was co-written and directed by his brother, Harry Holland. The Holland brothers also took part in the first annual Sands golf tournament, which will continue as part of the festival’s wider activities. It was on the pristine golfing greens where Tom linked up with Deadline to discuss his career so far and plans for future projects, including whether he will return for a fourth Spider-Man movie.

The Avengers: Endgame filmmakers are connected to the town through Joe’s eldest daughter, who studied at St Andrews. The two Russos were in the building this evening.

The 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards took awards season one step closer to the Oscars.
The annual PGA Awards happened February 25, immediately following the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards. The awards-heavy weekend festivities also included the 2024 SAG Awards on February 24.
The nominees mirror the Academy Awards’ frontrunners list, with winner “Oppenheimer,” plus “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” among the contenders.
Formally known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, the Theatrical Motion Picture category for the PGA Awards has historically been an indicator of Best Picture winners, with 15 of the previous 20 winners going on to win the top title at the Academy Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” director and “Maestro” producer Martin Scorsese was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award for his producing work over the last half-century.

A victory for “Oppenheimer” here would be significant because, more often than not, the winner at PGA goes on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Two of the top contenders for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards have something to celebrate ahead of their upcoming Oscar showdown.
On Saturday night, The Eternal Memory, directed by Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, was named Best IberoAmerican Film at the Goya Awards in Valladolid, Spain. Meanwhile, on this side of the Atlantic, Mstyslav Chernov’s 20 Days in Mariupol won Best Documentary at the DGA Awards held at the Beverly Hilton.
As she accepted the Goya – Spain’s equivalent of the Oscar – Alberdi was joined on stage by Paulina Urrutia, one of the two protagonists of the film. The Eternal Memory, or La Memoria Infinita as it is called in Spanish, tells the love story between Urrutia and Augusto Góngora, a bond that only deepened after Augusto was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 62.

Now that the Oscar nominations are official, catch-up time begins in earnest. But if you’ve already seen everything on Oscar voters honored, a worthwhile also-ran is hitting digital platforms this week.
The contender to watch this week: “Ferrari“
MIchael Mann‘s biopic about car mogul Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) never got the awards-season fuel it needed to make the nomination roster. The movie’s roaring engines missed out on the Best Sound nod that many pundits expected, and Penélope Cruz, who plays Ferrari’s wronged wife, couldn’t nab the Best Supporting Actress recognition she deserved. (Cruz fared better with the Screen Actors Guild Awards.) The film did, however, make the National Board of Review’s list of the year’s 10 best, and now you can rent or purchase it for a premium rate on VOD.

Nominations for the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced with the surprise of two international titles — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” — the first time two international titles have been nominated by the guild.

The Oscars shortlist voting period has closed as of 5:00 p.m. Pt.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the finalists in 10 categories — documentary feature (15), documentary short subject (15), international feature (15), makeup and hairstyling (10), sound (10), original score (15), original song (15), animated short film (15), live action short film (15), and visual effects (10) — on Thursday, Dec. 21.
We expect to see multiple best picture contenders in various races, including Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic “Oppenheimer.” When it comes to “Barbie,” we are forecasting six mentions for the movie, including three of its songs — “Dance the Night,” “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For,” which feels like it sealed the deal with Billie Eilish’s moving musical performance on this week’s “Saturday Night Live.”

One of the favorites to make the Oscar documentary feature shortlist this year takes viewers to a remote area of Estonia, within the healing space of the smoke sauna. It is an ancient tradition in that part of the world, a way of “connecting family and friends to cleanse body and soul inside a place of peace and contemplation.”
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, directed by Anna Hints and produced by Marianne Ostrat, won Best Documentary at the European Film Awards last weekend, and on Tuesday earned a PGA Award nomination for Outstanding Producer of a Documentary Motion Picture. Hints shot the film across different seasons, in winter and summer, with a group of women taking part in the smoke sauna ritual: hours in the hot space, naked in the semi-darkness, releasing physical and emotional toxins.

Inspired by real events, Shoshana is a political thriller set in 1930s Tel Aviv. “American Symphony”
“Beyond Utopia”
“The Disappearance of Shere Hite”

Justine Triet’s courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall” triumphed at the 36th European Film Awards, taking statuettes for best film, director, screenwriter and actress at the ceremony, which took place Saturday in Berlin. It had been previously announced that it had won the best editing prize as well.
“Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and recently took the screenplay and international feature awards at the Gothams, but was not selected to represent France in the international feature film category of the Oscars. Despite that setback, Triet said the film would still compete for other categories at the Oscars. “Now we are in the race, of course. We continue down that road,” she said at a press conference following the ceremony in Berlin.
Triet, who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur Harari, said that they had written it for Sandra Hüller, winner of the best actress award.

Justine Triet took the best directing honor for Anatomy and shared the best screenplay honor with Arthur Harari for their joint script to the twisty murder mystery. A couple in real life, Triet and Harari said writing the script, which is a piercing dissection of a marriage in crisis, “put our relationship to the test but thankfully we survived.”

Generally, when I enter the small sauna room at my local Ymca after a workout, I’m prone to eavesdrop on a group of men opining on topics such as Andrew Tate. In comparison, the Sundance-winning documentary Smoke Sauna Sisterhood presents the steamy (not in that way) space as something genuinely holy. 89 minutes of, ahem, women talking, director Anna Hints’ film is a noble effort from whom you can easily appreciate the overall gesture. But for veering into the cosmic or transcendental to often corny effect, one doesn’t really feel it conceptualizing in some intelligent fashion.
Taking us to a cabin in rural Estonia that’s been officially deemed a place of cultural importance by Unesco, we maybe get a subtle advertisement cloaked inside images that at times resemble the avant-garde concoctions of director Philippe Grandrieux. If one thinks of naked old bodies, in cinematic terms, as a shock effect in horror films,...

The smoke sauna practices of southern Estonia will likely be unfamiliar to most viewers entering the cloistered world of Anna Hints’s Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, and it’s to the film’s credit that any pedagogy it does offer comes only in allusive, piecemeal ways. Some research will reveal that there’s a metaphysical dimension that separates the Estonian spa tradition from that of other cultures, but Hints’s documentary is in no hurry to dispel secrets.
Throughout the immersive Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, Hints centers the experiential qualities of women gathering in a smoke sauna deep in the woods over what appears to be a year of screen time. It focuses particularly on therapeutic sessions of soul-baring conversation undertaken at length in blistering heat. Such epiphanies are the implied intent of the Estonian nature spas, and Hints’s candid presentation of these moments is testament to both her technical commitment...
