The Book of Clarence: New trailer shows how far Clarence is willing to go to prove he’s not a nobody
The new trailer for The Book of Clarence has been released. While the previous trailer showcased a soulful, satirical tone, this new one brings the gladiator action as Clarence is now shown to be confronted by James McAvoy’s Roman character, who proposes a challenge for our blasphemous character.
The outrageous mind of Jeymes Samuel, who last brought us Netflix‘s The Harder They Fall, is tackling complex themes in his new biblical satire from TriStar Pictures and Legendary. The Book of Clarence sees Lakeith Stanfield doing the unthinkable — posing as humanity’s next lord and savior. Stanfield is joined by an all-star cast that features the acting talents of Omar Sy, Rj Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Additionally, the cast also includes Caleb McLaughlin, Babs Olusanmokun, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Nicholas Pinnock, Micheal Ward, Chase Dillon, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

The synopsis reads, “Inspired by classic Hollywood epics set in biblical times, Legendary’s The Book of Clarence tells the tale of Clarence (Lakeith Stanfield), a down-on-his-luck denizen of Jerusalem embarking on a misguided attempt to capitalize on the rise of celebrity and influence of the Messiah for his own personal gain.

Deadline is reporting that Sony has tapped September 22 for the release date of Jeymes Samuel’s biblical epic, The Book of Clarence. Samuel had recently made The Harder They Fall and will be tackling religious themes in his new film. The movie sports an impressive ensemble of actors, which include Lakeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, Rj Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Teyana Taylor, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Although the film will deal with the subject of religion, Deadline reports that movie isn’t faith-based. After nearly twenty years of writing music as The Bullitts, Jeymes Samuel finally made his filmmaking dreams come true when his feature debut, “The Harder They Fall,” hit Netflix last year. Samuel’s 2013 short “They Die By Dawn” first brought him attention, but “The Harder They Fall” put him on the map. And as both of those films were Westerns with Black casts, it’s clear Samuel has an enthusiasm for genre, film history, and utilizing them for a Black perspective.

If you’re a fan of the music and video creations by singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel — performed under his stage name The Bullitts — you’ll recognize that same enthusiasm, precociousness and ambition directed into his feature directorial debut, The Harder They Fall. Spurred by his love for the genre and the lack of diversity in old Hollywood westerns, Samuel recruited a veritable who’s who of Black actors — Idris Elba, Lakeith Stanfield and Jonathan Majors, among them — to play infamous gunslingers of color who somehow eluded the attention of previous storytellers. The film began its journey as the 2013 short They Die By Dawn, which he broadened into a Netflix feature seen around the world. A rare talent in that he not only writes, directs and produces but also scores his films — he has a silky singing voice reminiscent of his brother, Seal — Samuel’s versatility is outshone only by his irresistible and infectious enthusiasm for cinema,...

Zest of the West: Samuels’ Western Soap Opera Long on Style, Short on Substance
In a film which plays as both recuperation and revisionism, Jeymes Samuels goes for broke in his feature debut, The Harder They Fall, a Neo-Western which fabricates a narrative based on a handful of real-life historical figures erased by white gatekeepers of both history and fiction.
Clearly a labor of love, the British musician previously lensed a 2013 medium length film They Die By Dawn covering the same territory, but once again captures a high profile ensemble of notables for an All-Black Western. Unfortunately, the whole is not the sum of its parts, and despite speckled with action, violence, and a script full of withering zingers (thanks in part to co-writer Boaz Yakin), the narrative fiber disintegrates into slim pickings once the smoke clears and the dust settles.…...

Variety cover star Jeymes Samuel could not have been more ready for his big moment. The writer, director, producer and composer was suited and booted as he stepped onto the bright blue carpet for the Los Angeles launch of his wild Western “The Harder They Fall” on Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium.
Since the movie presents a fresh take on the dusty genre, the dress code was super fly. Samuel, stars Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Deon Cole, and the film’s producer Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter went for an “all Black everything” moment, all showing up swagged-out in head to toe onyx. There’s a cruel irony working against Hollywood’s efforts to diversify: For nearly a century, the industry depicted the world as a place dominated by white, straight, able-bodied men. The movies typically relegated women and people of color to supporting and subservient roles, while excluding (or else vilifying) queer and handicapped characters. As a result, entire generations have been raised on lopsided and inaccurate representations of our past — that Jesus was white, for example — to the extent that they don’t necessarily believe it when Black actors appear in situations where they played a significant (off-screen) role. Like the American West.
Well, as Jeymes Samuel’s stylish outlaw revenge saga “The Harder They Fall” insists from the outset, “These. People. Existed.” — white letters punched through a black screen like someone blasted it with shotgun pellets. The movie, which kicked off the BFI London Film Festival with a bang, isn...

One of the most intriguing questions of the movie year has been demystified. Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby has a composer, and it's hip-hop mogul and Glastonbury-conquering popster, Jay-z. 1920s Long Island just got one louder. If it looks like a typically off-beam musical choice by the man who brought William Shakespeare and Butthole Surfers together, it's not wholly unexpected. The film's two trailers to date have featured Mr Z's collaboration with Kanye West 'No Church In The Wild' from Watch The Throne. It's been a little while since we last said anything about this; it's titled They Die By Dawn, a western featuring black cowboys, conceived and directed by Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts (a collaborative group of artists - both music and film - headed by Samuel). The all-star cast includes some fan favorites: Jesse Williams, Michael K. Williams, Isaiah Washington, Bokeem Woodbine, Clifton Powell, Rosario Dawson, Giancarlo Esposito, Erykah Badu, and others. But it's not a feature film unfortunately; it's a short; however, I wouldn't count out the potential for a feature adaptation, especially if response to the short is strong....

Keep your eyes open for Jeymes Samuels' half hour western short They Die By Dawn. Because not only has Samuels assembled a stellar cast - Michael K Williams, Isaiah Washington, Nate Parker, Jesse Williams, Erykah Badu, Rosario Dawson, Giancarlo Esposito - but he clearly knows what to do with them. Production design and performances look uniformly excellent and I can't wait to see the whole thing. Check the trailer below....

Film-maker Tyler Perry has complained that all-black casts are on the way out. In fact the opposite is true – but what we need to see are black characters, not just stereotypes
According to Tyler Perry, the producer of Precious, all-black casts are dying out. In a blog on his official site, the writer/director/actor wrote that black ensembles were "on the verge of becoming extinct", and he was lucky to have found a studio that saw the value in his "type of storytelling". In films such as Why Did I Get Married? and Diary of a Mad Black Woman, his type of storytelling marries the sentimental gloop of Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, Valentine's Day) to the soap operatics of Aaron "Dynasty" Spelling, and always with the same message – that a black woman struggling through adversity will triumph in the end.
Perry has been criticised by people including Spike Lee...

In a recent interview with Collider, Idris Elba claimed that his schedule was so packed that he moved out of his home without signing a lease anywhere else. It’s all movie set trailers from here on out. He’s probably not exaggerating. He’ll be seen later this year in Prometheus and potentially the Western They Die By Dawn. Next year, he’ll be in the thriller No Good Deed and Pacific Rim. After that, it’s a turn as Nelson Mandela for director Justin Chadwick’s Long Walk to Freedom and what promises to be another Mandela-esque turn as Heimdall in Thor 2. This comes on the heels of Joss Whedon’s massive success with The Avengers and a public suggestion that the sequel will see more female superheroes. Reportedly, the actor would like to learn more about Heimdall in the next film and give the audience more opportunity to see him front and...
