This is the first episode of the series not to feature all five cast members. This is due to the fact that the episode takes place before Grace Van Pelt joins the team. However, a photograph of Van Pelt is shown when Rigsby is reading her application file. Amanda Righetti is the only main cast member who does not appear in every episode to this point.
Amanda Righetti (Grace Van Pelt) was on maternity leave during the time this episode was being filmed.
At the end of the episode, as Jane begins to go through the Red John files, he leans up against the brown couch that will later become the couch he always lies on.
The exterior of the judge's home is the same home used as Wayne Manor in the 1960's Batman TV Series.
Hannigan says, "How do you figure that, Kreskin?" This is a reference to world-famous mentalist Kreskin who was known as "The Amazing Kreskin" and has entertained the audiences of shows such as The Merv Griffin Show (1962), The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962), The Mike Douglas Show (1961), Howard Stern (1994), and Late Night with David Letterman (1982), among many others.
