Fans of the Netflix fantasy series The Witcher should be filled with glee right now. After all, the world's biggest streaming service has axed a lot of fantasy shows in the last few years, including well-received ones like Shadow & Bone and Warrior Nun.
But The Witcher proved too popular to purge, due in part to the massive star appeal of Henry Cavill as the lead character, monster hunter Geralt of Rivia. And while fans of other fantasy shows are mourning their cancellations, The Witcher has been confirmed for two more seasons.
But its fans are more nervous than excited.

In spite of his leading-man Hollywood cred, Henry Cavill is a self-proclaimed fantasy nerd. He campaigned hard for the role of Geralt and was open about his passion for the story. But creative differences soon caused friction on set, especially as the storyline of The Witcher...

Unfortunately for fans of the fantasy genre, Netflix has never been the network you can trust to keep shows in the genre going. After the huge backlash the platform received for canceling Shadow and Bone, one would think their methods would have changed, but fans of the newly released series aren't so sure.
As ironic as it is, news of Netflix's acquisition of the Dead Boy Detectives TV series from HBO Max broke the same day the cancellation of Lockwood & Co. was announced. And as much as fans of the DC characters would like to believe they won't suffer the same fate, it's hard not to draw parallels.
Is Dead Boy Detectives Renewed for Season 2?
One thing every TV fan knows about all streaming premieres is that the network will have access not only to the reviews the show gets, but also to the number of views in general. The...

EW has shared two new official promo stills for Alien: Romulus as part of their summer preview, and one of 'em pays homage to a scene from Aliens.
In James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's '70s classic, Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) how to use a pulse rifle before the crew land in some real pretty sh*t with the attacking Xenomorphs, and the moment is recreated here with Archie Renaux's Tyler and Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The second image gives us another look at a Xenomorph about to give an unfortunate crew member a very bad day.
While the previous movies focused on blue-collar colleagues, soldiers, and prisoners, director Fede Alvarez explains how Romulus will take a different approach by introducing a group of characters who have become as close as family.

A new image from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus has been released (via USA Today), and it gives us another look at one of the movie's Xenomorphs as it bares its terrifying metallic teeth
A few subtle changes aside, the titular creature has pretty much remained the same since it first debuted in Ridley Scott's original classic, and it doesn't look like Romulus is going to alter the design to any great extent.
Check out the new image below, along with a recent video clip of one of the movie's practical Facehuggers.

“Dead Boy Detectives” is TV’s latest Neil Gaiman adaptation and an expansion of the “Sandman” universe. On Wednesday, Netflix released a trailer for the YA-mystery-fantasy-horror-comedy genre mashup series.
The trailer, which is set to a custom version of My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade,” gives a preview of the series’ darkly whimsical tone, in the vein of “The Sandman” or “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”
Based on a comic series by acclaimed fantasy writer Gaiman and produced by co-showrunners Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) and Beth Schwartz (“Sweet Tooth”) and superproducers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter, “Dead Boy Detectives” follows a pair of paranormal detectives, Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), who are best friends and ghosts, as they solve paranormal mysteries in the mortal world.

These days, watching teen dramas feels a little like taking a trip to the library. Studios have always loved established IP, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many of today’s biggest YA shows are based on books. There’s Netflix’s Heartstopper, Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, the recently canceled but still wildly popular Shadow and Bone, and the upcoming We Were Liars, to name just a few. Even Paramount+’s School Spirits was adapted from a not-yet published graphic novel. In recent years, Hollywood has also begun tapping into a new kind of literary source that just might hold the key to the future of teen dramas: BookTok.

The reactions to Netflix’s sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem are, if anything, inconsistent. The reviews from top critics are all over the place, from lavish praise to disses and everything in between. Viewers are similarly split, with some fans of Liu Cixin’s novel criticizing the series for its bold adaptive choices, and many others saying 3 Body Problem is one of the best genre shows they’ve ever watched (one might say it’s a chaotic era of 3 Body Problem reactions). Yet among fans who have finished the show so far, one consistent reaction is emerging: The show’s cliffhanger ending (no spoilers here) left them really wanting to see what happens next.

It's been nearly seven years since Ridley Scott returned to the "Alien" franchise with the ever-divisive "Alien: Covenant." While we may not be getting a sequel to that film, Disney and 20th Century Studios are bringing the Xenomorphs back for another big-screen thrill ride in the form of this summer's "Alien: Romulus." Directed by Fede Alvarez, it looks like a return to the franchise's horror roots with new characters, a new ship, and familiar threats.
Alvarez recently spoke with Variety in honor of the recently released "Alien: Romulus" teaser trailer. The filmmaker was asked what he is bringing to the table for his film, which takes place 20 years after the events of the original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic. Alvarez, much like Ridley Scott and James Cameron before him, has a unique view of this universe. But his main goal? Make "Alien" scary again:

The Alien saga returns to its extraterrestrial roots with the franchise’s upcoming Alien: Romulus, a standalone installment hitting movie theaters this August.
The latest chapter takes place between the events of the franchise’s first two installments — 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens — and judging by the teaser released Wednesday, writer/director Fede Alvarez brings Romulus back to the more horror-influenced, marooned-in-space vibe of those early Alien movies, with face-hugging xenomorphs aplenty in the brief minute-long preview.

The first teaser trailer for "Alien: Romulus" just dropped, and Fede Alvarez's take on the space-set series looks, well, horrifying. The sneak preview includes buckets of blood and some gnarly body horror, making it a welcome return to what worked so well for Ridley Scott's chest-bursting 1979 original. "Evil Dead" and "Don't Breathe" helmer Alvarez certainly appears to be putting his own spin on the world of "Alien," but he also confessed in a recent interview with Variety that he drew from the work of the greats who came before him – and even sat down with them to talk about their work.
When asked about the film's continuity, Alvarez explained where "Alien: Romulus" falls in the "Alien" timeline, and explained that he went to both original film director Scott (who's producing the new movie) and sequel writer-director James Cameron to help maintain the canon story as it exists so far.

Netflix sci-fi series 3 Body Problem isn’t out yet, but showrunners Dan Benioff and Db Weiss have talked about their future plans for it. “We’d need three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”
With a reported budget of about $160m, 3 Body Problem is a particularly pricey TV series from Netflix – a company that isn’t afraid to throw lots of money at certain projects. And while the future of the sci-fi show – based on the best-selling trilogy of books by Cixin Liu – depends on how the first eight episodes are received, showrunners Db Weiss and David Benioff certainly have big plans for it.
Speaking to Collider, the duo revealed that they already had the second season mapped out – “We’re much farther along with that plan than rough idea stages,” Weiss said – and are also thinking about how long the series could run for in total.

Look who else is checking into The White Lotus: Charlotte Le Bon is joining the HBO anthology’s third season, replacing Francesca Corney. Sources told Deadline — which reported the recasting on Friday — that White Lotus producers swapped Corney for Le Bon because they wanted someone who appeared older in the role, the details of which are still under wraps. Le Bon is known for her roles in the films The Hundred-Foot Journey, The Walk, and The Promise. She also co-wrote and directed the 2022 coming-of-age film Falcon Lake. Corney, who’s vacating the White Lotus part, guest-starred in Mrs Sidhu Investigates and recurred in The Buccaneers last year. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Francesca Corney (@franicorn) This is the second known recasting for The White Lotus Season 3. Miloš Biković (South Wind) was dropped from the production in February after his ties to Russia came under criticism.

HBO in November 2022 announced a third season for The White Lotus, which will bring a new installment of the Mike White-created anthology series to screens.
The first installment, which premiered July 2021 and was set in Hawaii, was nominated for 20 Emmy Awards and won a leading 10, including for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Season 2, set in Sicily, debuted October 30, 2022 and won five Emmys, including a repeat for Jennifer Coolidge.
When will The White Lotus Season 3 premiere?
Originally eyed to premiere in 2024, HBO boss Casey Bloys has said Season 3 will likely arrive in 2025, delayed be the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes that shut down production through the heart of 2023. Season 3 of The White Lotus, to be set in Thailand after setting the action in Hawaii for Season 1 and Sicily for Season 2, is now slated to begin filming in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok in February 2024.

Jenna Coleman had “avoided” playing a detective – until she was approached about playing rookie cop Ember Manning in a scenic lake town in Lancashire in North West England in BBC Studios’ The Jetty from creator and writer Cat Jones and Firebird Pictures.
“What appealed to me was that the character of Ember was completely there on page one,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, it’s a crime thriller, but it’s wrapped up in such a human, emotive, and poetic piece. It is crafted so it has all of the great things of a crime thriller – turning the page and having all of the beats. But it’s also such a feminine piece that really explores relationships and provokes. It has all sorts of blurred boundaries and is asking a lot of uncomfortable questions without fully answering them.”

James Woods’ Nuclear Secrets
By Christopher Nolan’s standards, Oppenheimer couldn’t be a more straightforward narrative. Scientist builds bomb. Bomb ends war. Government betrays scientist. But there is one part of the movie that has some viewers scratching their heads, and it’s right there in the opening credits: What the heck is James Woods’ name doing on the screen? The 76-year-old actor, best known today for his right-wing conspiracy mongering, is listed as an executive producer. But as far as anyone can tell, he had no part in making the film, never met with Nolan and wouldn’t know a neutron reflector from a People’s Choice Award. So, how’d he nab an EP credit? Woods, it turns out, is pals with businessman J. David Wargo, a onetime Discovery board member and longtime Trinity Project buff. Back in 2015, Wargo bought the rights to the Oppenheimer biography American...

A unique Stone Age horror movie, Out of Darkness – previously titled The Origin – is now playing in theaters courtesy of Bleecker Street, and we’ve got an exclusive clip for ya today.
In this clip, the characters come across the disemboweled carcass of a woolly mammoth, which raises one terrifying question: what the hell is capable of killing such a massive beast?
Watch the clip below and find the trailer for Out of Darkness underneath.
We’ve been told, “It’s a tense, emotional, and incredibly crafted film; so much creativity went into making the paleolithic world – including the entire language spoken in the film, which was created specifically for this by a linguist and an archaeologist.”
In the film, “A small boat reaches the shores of a raw and desolate landscape. A group of six have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving,...

Actor Julian Kostov is joining HBO’s The White Lotus, replacing Miloš Biković in the show’s cast.
Kostov (Shadow and Bone) will recur in the show’s third season, which is set to begin filming in Thailand this month. He joins the cast after HBO “decided to part ways” with Biković, following public criticism from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over Biković’s seeming support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a Jan. 24 social media post, the ministry wrote, “HBO, is it all right for you to work with a person who supports genocide & violates international law?” over a video clip of statements Biković has made about Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. The Serbia-born actor has worked in Russia for the past decade; he received an award from Russian leader Vladimir Putin in 2018 and became a Russian citizen in 2021.

“The White Lotus” Season 3 has added Julian Kostov to its cast.
Kostov will appear in a recurring role in the HBO series that was previously held by Miloš Biković. Biković was recently cut from the series, however, over his support of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the country’s war against Ukraine.
“Today, a targeted campaign has been unleashed against me, seemingly as an external maneuver to influence decisions that can create a disturbing precedent shadowing the essence of artistic freedom,” Biković previously said in a statement. “The result of such a narrative is the triumph of absurdity and the defeat of art.”
Kostov joins previously announced Season 3 cast members: Leslie Bibb, Dom Hetrakul, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Parker Posey, Tayme Thapthimthong, Christian Friedel, Morgana O’Reilly, Lek Patravadi, Shalini Peiris, Carrie Coon, Francesca Corney, Nicholas Duvernay, Arnas Fedaravičius, Natasha Rothwell, Walton Goggins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aimee Lou Wood, Sarah Catherine Hook,...

The Decline in U.S. Commissioning and Production
A discernible downturn in U.S. commissioning and production activity has been evident since the latter half of 2022, predating notable industry disruptions such as the strikes. Full year comparison of the number of scripted shows produced for 2023 against the average of the previous two years shows a 38% decline. The list of his clients, dominated by multi-hyphenates in the comedy space, include Dave Attell, Atsuko Okatsuka, Karan Soni, Moshe Kasher, Katherine Ryan, Vanessa Gonzalez, Noah Garfinkel, Brent Morin, David Nihill, Jiaoying Summers, Sara Weinshenk, Jessi Cruickshank, Sarah Burns, Marc Evan Jackson as well as WWE’s Sami Zayn.
For Veneris, this marks a return to Brillstein where she was a college intern in the early 2010s.

Ciri in The Witcher season 3 – Picture: Netflix
While the third season of Netflix’s The Witcher was in production, the streamer quietly started the development of The Rats, a new prequel series centered on a group of teenage renegades who were introduced at the end of Season 3. Here’s everything we know so far about the new upcoming spin-off that’s scheduled to arrive in 2024.
The Witcher writer, Haily Hall, is on board with the project as the lead writer and will also serve as showrunner. Shadow and Bone and The Sandman director Mairzee Almas is attached to direct an unknown amount of episodes. We’re now at the end of 2023, and the list of canceled Netflix shows for the year is now complete. Below, we’ll look at all the high-profile cancelations (that have been announced anyway) as of December 2023.
Cancelations are a painful part of being a Netflix subscriber. There’s nothing worse than starting a show only to discover that it’ll never properly conclude. Netflix isn’t the only network by any means to cancel, but given the scale of the service globally and the amount of content it produces, it’s easy to see why Netflix is the boogeyman.
With that said, Netflix does renew plenty, with over 150 shows at any given time set to return for future seasons.
There will also be lots and lots of shows that fall outside of this list into two camps.
Naturally ending shows include The Crown, Firefly Lane, and Never Have I Ever.

What a year it has been for the world of streaming and the entertainment industry at large!
With the biggest strikes in Hollywood history, entire companies undergoing tremendous shifts, and a multitude of other trends, it has indeed been an interesting year. What have been Netflix’s strengths and weaknesses over the past year?
Here are our hot takes on the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Good: Licensing is Back
When Netflix first began its streaming service, its entire library consisted of licensed titles from Hollywood studios and TV show and movie owners. Since 2013, Netflix has heavily invested in its own roster of shows and movies. The total number of unique titles in its Original library recently reached 4,000, representing over 55% of the total US library.
The reason for this heavy investment is that there were early signs competitors of Netflix would begin to cut off licensing.

Netflix added nine million subscribers in the last quarter of 2023, so while there is now an oversaturation of streaming sites giving them a run for their money, Netflix still seems to be at the top. The streaming giant is expected to spend more money creating new content even though they canceled more shows in 2023, like fan favorites Shadow and Bone, Fate: The Winx Saga, Inside Job, and Lockwood & Co. But with new shows like the live-action adaptation of One Piece being a success in the United States and Japan, with the right shows scheduled for 2024, the...

Analysis: Netflix Viewing Data Provides Raw Numbers, but Which Titles Caused Most Audience Reaction?
A new report from Diesel Labs is giving greater context into Netflix’s recently-released viewership numbers.
