Maybe too Contrived
reallyevilboy28 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'm yet again going to tick the spoiler button because toward the end of the review I am going to give away the ending. SPOILER ALERT

Now, I love Korean movies and that as well as the great reviews this movie has been getting may have been setting me up to watch this with way too high expectations.

For me this movie bombed. a 7 out of 10 in any other movie genre is not a bomb but for me, for South Korean movies 7 out of 10 is a loss.

I found the plot maybe a little to contrived, set out way too precisely and by the time they got to the huge twist I really did not care.

SPOILER BELOW!! The thing that got me the most was that the main character went to so much effort to obscure the murder of the x-husband that he hid the x- husband's body where no one would ever find it. Killed a homeless person the very same way and hid their identity so that the police would think that it was the x-husband's body.

A] The first part of this plan would have done the trick.Hiding the body where it will never be found without killing another person seems like an okay plan. B] No one care about the dead homeless person. "Oh you really love me, you killed a homeless person for me" I think the movie really fails to make a distinction that homeless people are actual people and killing a homeless person is still murder.

7/10 ... for the ending.
AJ198322 April 2019
I won't spoil it for you, but its not the ending you would want from a movie like this. A powerful love story hidden behind a smart crime/mystery chain of events .. well crafted . Enjoyable movie until the very last part.. left me in tears. Watch at your own risk.

Almost Perfect
yushendrayana1 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Overall I enjoy this movie, it is interesting to follow our protagonist way of thinking and learn how he manage to cover her crime perfectly.

But in the end it is revealed that our protagonist plan is start by disposing the ex-husband body perfectly where no one can possibly find them. Come on if he can do it in first place why do he need to more risky efforts? That fact just turn down my excitement of the entire movie plot. Maybe love did turn someone to be a fool.

Good South Korean crime thriller.
deloudelouvain8 August 2022
South Korean cinema, definitely one of my favorites. They manage to surprise me every time. From all Asian countries, they're by far the best. No overacting like in the other Asian countries, instead you get more than decent acting. Yong-Eui-Ja X (or Perfect Number for the English title) is a slow paced crime thriller. Good cinematography, engaging story, and excellent acting. Maybe not the best South Korean movie but certainly worth watching.

Okay but not that great
rightwingisevil3 August 2022
This paces of this movie is way too slow. The lighting is too dim all the time; too many night scenes and rainy night scenes. The leading male actor is so overacting to pretend that he is a geek and a loner. When her ex beat her so viciously, keeps hitting and slapping her non-stop, yet her face still looks perfect without any bruise, no swollen or puffy bluish purple wounds, her lips still looks perfect, no blood at all. The elevator scene of the movie theater is outrageous impossible without any logic. The screenplay is full of loopholes. This is a very slow, without energy thriller.

It was entertaining enough the second of three versions
jordondave-280855 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(2012) Perfect Number (In South Korean with English subtitles) PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

Adapted from the novel "The Devotion of Suspect X" by Keigo Higashino, which this is the second of three movie adaptions. The first adaption was released in 2008 called "Suspect X" which was a Japanese adaption that had the same principal but supposedly consist of a different ending. Anyways, it centers on a mathematician instructor, Seok-go (Seung-beom Ryu) living right door to a rather single young lady, BaekHwa-sun (Yo-won Lee) who lives with her niece, Yoon-ah (Bo-ra Kim). As we witness their daily lives, Seok-go appears to be an introvert, who the only time he goes and see his neighbor, Hwa-sun regularly is whenever he goes to pick up his lunch from the place where she works at the which is a luncheon "Good Morning". It becomes complicated as soon as Hwa-sun's abusive ex Kim Cheol-min (Min-ho Kwak) discovers where she lives and breaks into her apartment before he assaults her and her niece some more. Hwa-sun ends up killing him by means of strangulation from the chord of a steaming iron. And because, her neighbor, Seok-go is able to hear everything next door to her, just as soon as she was going to the police about it, Seok go volunteers to not do it, and that he would go and hide the body. And as soon as the body is found, Detective Min-Bum (Cho Jin-woong) is assigned to the case with his ex Hwa-sun becoming the prime suspect. As it becomes a game of cat and mouse between Det Jo and math teacher, Seok-go since they used to be school mates.

SPOIL As it turned out, he purposely left a body for the police to find, only it was soon revealed toward the end that it was not even the same person. That it was actually a homeless person Seok-go had picked up, and then personally had killed. Burying the actual body of Kim Cheol-min into the ocean, while purposing the identity tag for the police to find making them think that it was indeed Hwa-sun's ex. One of the inconsistencies I had was how come the homeless person was not reported missing! And why did the other homeless person ran away! Was there like more than one homeless person paid!!

I liked the ending of this version better than the Japanese version.
Fella_shibby8 May 2022
I first saw this in 2012. Revisited it recently.

This is the second adaptation of the novel The Devotion of Suspect X.

This is the Korean version with amazing performances. Sorry, i ain't aware of the names.

Being a Korean movie, it has some melodrama but I liked the ending of this version much better than the Japanese version.

The hardwork of the math teacher goes futile in Jap version but here in this version it doesn't.

While the Jap version has the mother n daughter, this one changed it to aunt n niece.

While in the Jap version they showed the physicist's amazing problem solving skills where he solves a crime via the explanation of physics.

This version doesn't showcases his skills.

Tugs at your brain and heart
groundcoffee18 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
What to make of this remake? It is the best movie I have seen in years. To me, this is better than the Japanese one. Take the ending, the male character who confessed is asked by the female lead, why he did it. In the Japanese version, he cries unabashedly, in this Korean version, his tears quietly flow.

Rare is a film that tugs at one's brain and heart at the same time. Yes, it is a tearjerker but the way the detective uncovers layer upon layer of evidence leading him to cast suspicion on his mathematician friend is feast for the brain.

Highly recommended. Ten out of ten stars.

perfect movie for me!
fluffset1 April 2013
I never watch the Japanese one, some of the viewer who watch the Japanese one will think something else after watch this. Just like when you watch fincher's dragon tattoo after the Swedish one, which one is better? So, I'm hardly rate ten star because no such perfect movie in this world, this movie either. But, something all moviegoers need is the movie that have some kind of spirit, which it can hold you to stay on your seat till the end of credit. Make your mind think like this is not right? What's going on? What will happen next? Should sequeling this! A love movie that doesn't need ''I love you'' quote.

What I don't like about this movie is,they should make it more longer, because we love to see what will happen to the character's life. I'm so sad, a good romance-detective-mystery movie. Highly recommended!!

Making a problem that nobody can ever solve
Misss2521 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't seen the Japanese version, so I don't know about that. But, What can I say about this movie? It was beyond my expectations as I didn't expect it to be a good movie because of its poor rating. But, proving me wrong, it turns out to be really good. I would have rated this 10/10 but Its ending wasn't not quite pleasant to me.

Story follows a math teacher and neighbour whom he is in love at first sight. One day, he hears some voices coming out of her room. As soon as he approaches her, he finds out, she killed her ex abusive husband and wants to confess it to police .But, She is worried about her niece. So, He tries to pacify her and covers everything single handed. Then rest of the story follows investigating the neighbour and planting evidence in favour of her.

If you haven't seen this movie already then avoid strolling down.

Here is the spoilers,

To cover her and niece crime, he dumped the body in the river with a heavy object to prevent it from floating. Moreover,he killed a helpless man at the same way his neighbour did.

Now the question arise why did he kill another man?

It's because he doesn't want leave a single clue that leads the detective to her. Her ex husband dead body had a bite mark which was done by her. Besides, she straggled him, there is a chance of finding finger prints. So,he dumped in river and killed another man to divert detectives attention. If the detective ever finds out about the murder, she won't be blamed for her doing.

Why he turns himself in?

He thought it would be better for her to leave alone. As she misunderstood him and said some unpleasant things. Besides, she loves another man as per his thought. At the end, he planted evidence against himself and turns own self down to let her free and to lead a peaceful life. We can say, he sacrificed himself for love.

Love & Math
zboston330 October 2016
I've yet to see the original Japanese version of this story, but the Korean version is one more reason why I feel Korea makes some of the best movies around.

A story of logic and math, this story emphasizes the relationships over the usual mystery. It's about why did it more than how did it, and the ending like a character says is happy and bitter.

The acting in excellent and the music is also a great part in why it's so effective.

I'm not going to give a lot of detail about the plot or the characters. See the move on Youtube with English subtitles and enjoy.

One in thousand movie U should watch it !!!
zorigt-ankhbayar12 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is based on Japanese novel called 'Devotion of Suspect X' name itself give a perfect description of main male character. Main character is devoted to the woman who he loves and because of that devotion he covers up murder of her ex husband which she killed under self-defence. It shows what sacrifice man or person can make for his/her love. In the end woman finds out that from the beginning main character was going to take blame for the murder, she runs to him only to find he is already going to jail in prison bus and she clings to the bus, calls his name which makes them both cry but bus does not stop and she falls to the ground crying. It makes you want to know what happened after that was it happy ending? or not. But personally I believe that doesn't matter for there is love, a true love that blooms in the end and that gives people hope. Don't you think so ?

Love Is Bitter
Foutainoflife14 September 2018
I liked this a lot. I've seen where this was a remake of an earlier film but this is my first time watching either. There were times when it seemed to be a bit slow, in my opinion, but over all there was a level of subtle suspense that held out through the whole film. It was sorta sad and I didn't really liked the way it ended even if it was the way it was "supposed" to end. It was worth a watch. Clever.
