Karl Ritter was an elderly pilot whose procrastination over a medical examination lost him his license to fly. He is forced to hire Kate Ashcroft as his replacement to keep his single airplane aloft and his transport business afloat. Karl is a Canadian citizen of German origin. Karl's struggle to keep his air-lift business afloat forces him to hire a female pilot named Kate Ashcroft. The sparks flew when the older man tries to interfere with the young woman's ambitions. Sometimes stubborn and always independent, Karl had never dreamed of hiring a woman pilot, but circumstances gave him little choice. Kate and Karl frequently disagreed, but after a while they come to understand one another better, and they settle on a sometimes uneasy truce. Karl Ritter's son Tim disappeared while flying through a sudden storm, and Karl now looks after his two grandsons Robert, 13, and Arnie, 9 . Also part of the Ritter "family" are Karl's mechanic Tom Oliver (Paul Stanley), Tom's wife Lily (Marianne Jones) the family housekeeper, and their young daughter Angel (Kim Nahanee).
