- Robin's dad denies Barney permission to marry his daughter, Marshall and Lily deal with Marvin's constipation, and why is Ted so dead-set against hiring a band for Barney and Robin's wedding?
- Now that Robin and Barney have announced their engagement to their friends, Ted and Lily fight to be their primary wedding planner, the two who have very differing views of what Robin and Barney should do for the big day. During their battle, they eventually admit to the other why they want to focus their attention on this task. Despite the less than the traditional loving relationship she has with her father, Robin still wants Barney to go through the ritual of asking him for her hand in marriage, which Barney is afraid to do because of Mr. Scherbatsky's cold and unfriendly demeanor. But Robin learns that her father has gone through a transformation - at least in his own mind - the reason for such which could affect his role in the wedding.—Huggo
- In 2013, Robin wants Barney to ask her father, Robin Sr (Ray Wise), for his blessing on their wedding. They are surprised to find that her formerly strict father has taken a turn for the cool, wearing Hawaiian shirts, offering hugs instead of a formal handshake, and keeping himself up to date on Facebook. Despite his brighter demeanor, Robin Sr. nonetheless turns down Barney's request to marry Robin. While Barney attempts to win over Robin Sr., Robin notes her father's repeated insistence to add him on her Facebook friends list and finally accepts the friend request. This was despite her friends telling her not to. Ted says that his own mom wrote a 2000-word review of "50 Shades of Grey" and 14 of those words were Vulva. He says Robin does not want to see what's behind the "Friend" door in her father's life, which includes endless lame games and cheer-leading photos from high school from back in their life. Barney dyes his hair black. Robin Sr retorts that when he married Robin's mother, he killed a whole family of bears and offered the pelts and bear meat as tribute to her father. Barney cannot even kill a rabbit in his apartment.
She is bitterly disappointed to learn that her father got remarried to his girlfriend Carol (Kristen Henry King) (a 48 years old dental hygienist with no kids, and who likes Zumba) without telling her (despite proudly proclaiming it on his page). Robin Sr credits Carol for his new and fun side of life. Because of the elder Scherbatsky's lack of involvement in her life, Robin declares that she will marry Barney without his permission and will not invite him to the wedding as she was not invited to his wedding either. Barney later helps the two reconcile and Robin Sr agrees to her request to share a dance with her at the reception.
Ted wants to own the planning for Robin and Barney's wedding, but Lily is adamant that this is her domain as Robin's best friend. Barney wants a band for the wedding, while Ted wants a DJ. So, Lily sides with Barney to get a band. Meanwhile, Ted and Lily fight over whether to hire a band or a DJ for the wedding-Ted is determined to hire a DJ and blocks all of Lily's attempts to hire a band requested by Robin. It was Ted who made a non-refundable deposit on the band that Barney wanted for the wedding and Lily found out.
With Marshall taking care of a constipated baby Marvin, Lily forces Ted to admit his unhappiness towards Robin and Barney being engaged by revealing a terrible secret of her own: sometimes she wishes she never became a mother. Although she loves Marvin and being his mother, she feels exhausted and unhappy that she was unable to fulfill her dreams as an artist. Ted finally admits hating the idea of Robin marrying Barney and feels extremely hurt, even though he is happy for both of them. Lily thinks that both she and Ted need to accept the pain in their lives and move on; Ted agrees to hire a wedding band.
Future Ted recollects meeting his ex-girlfriend Cindy (Rachel Bilson) and her wife, Casey, a week before the wedding and he revealed how the band Robin picked canceled at the last minute. Upon hearing the news, Cindy immediately suggests a replacement: her ex-roommate's band is available for the wedding since they were dropped from their gig. Future Ted goes on to tell his children that if Robin and Barney had let him hire a DJ, he would have never met their mother.
