Dementer
Stars: Katie Groshong, Brandy Edmiston, Larry Fessenden, Eller Hall, Scott Hodges, Stephanie Kinkle | Written and Directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cults are a classic horror film troupe for good reason… In Dementer our protagonist Katie (Katie Groshong) runs away from a cult and takes a job caring for people with special needs in a centre. Our opening scene of running naked through the woods, with some surreal horror elements is suitably tense and peculiar.
Our “low on background checks” special needs centre plays out in the manner of a fly on the wall documentary and it works rather well. Katie gets involved with the patients drawing and colouring. She seems to care about the people, and she is clearly off to a good start. She befriends one of the patients, Stephanie, in particular/ Sadly, her past seems to be just behind her. She has tried to mystically protect herself,...

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to check out an array of projects from three different female filmmakers who were part of the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, including Here Before, which was written and directed by Stacey Gregg, Kier-La Janisse’s folk horror doc Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, as well as Witch Hunt from writer/director Elle Callahan.
Read on to see what I thought of this trio of films out of this year’s SXSW, and be sure to keep an eye out for more on these projects in the near future as well.
Here Before: With her feature film debut, Irish writer/director Stacey Gregg makes quite a statement with Here Before, a psychological thriller that also happens to be a thoughtful cinematic meditation on grief and motherhood. Featuring yet another all-timer performance from Andrea Riseborough, Here Before was easily the most surprising film I saw during this year’s SXSW.

Religious cults seem to be plentiful in the USA, or so the movies would have us believe. In a country where it is automatically assumed that one has a relgious belief, it would seem that fear of the devil runs deep, particularly in more isolated areas. So what happens when you've managed to escape such a cult, but the fear follows you? Can you shut out the voices? Can you truly believe it isn't real? Or will it always be inside you, a worm wrapped around your heart? In the follow up to his 2013 film Jug Face, Chad Crawford Kinkle returns with Dementer, another story of people and their strange beliefs in the backwoods of Tennesse. This time, it's the story of a woman...

Ahead of Dementer's world premiere screening on October 10th at the Nashville Film Festival, we have a look at the official trailer and poster:
"The sophomore feature from writer/director Chad Crawford Kinkle, whose 2013 film Jug Face made waves across the indie genre scene, Dementer is daring, full-force arthouse horror that pulls absolutely no punches.
Katie, a young woman determined to do something positive with her life after fleeing from a backwoods cult, takes a job at a center for special needs adults. Desperately attempting to live a normal life, she is overwhelmed by signs that “the devils” are after Stephanie (newcomer Stephanie Kinkle), a woman with Down Syndrome that she now cares for.
Using writings from a strange notebook, Katie creates rituals to ward away the evil while taking care of Stephanie at the center and in her home. But nothing seems to work, and Stephanie is becoming sicker with each passing day.

"I don't sleep much anyway..." Smithland Films has debuted an official trailer for this indie horror thriller called Dementer, the second feature from filmmaker Chad Crawford Kinkle (of Jug Face previously). This is premiering at the Nashville Film Festival coming up this month, hence this new trailer to promote that festival debut. After fleeing a creepy backwoods cult, a woman tries to turn her life around by taking a job in a home for special needs adults only to discover that she must face her dark past to save a down syndrome girl. Described as a "daring, full-force arthouse horror that pulls absolutely no punches." Starring Katie Groshong, Stephanie Kinkle, Brandy Edmiston, Eller Hall, and Larry Fessenden. An odd trailer. This reminds me a bit of Ben Wheatley's Kill List, especially with that eerie blood logo. Check it out below. Here's the first trailer (+ teaser poster) for Chad Crawford Kinkle's Dementer,...

One of this year’s Frightfest World Premieres, Black Site had people excited with only its description promising John Carpenter-esque action… Which is all I needed to hear to give it a watch. In truth, despite despite this playing at Frighfest, it’s not really a horror movie. The sci-fi elements more than make it worthy of being shown at one of the World’s leading genre festivals though.
The sci-fi here feels very Lovecraftian, involving elder gods that are living on Earth being captured and held at the Artemis Black Site until they are not needed any more and are sent back from where they originally came. It all feels very much...

With just two features under his directorial belt, writer/director Joe Begos has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting genre filmmakers working on the independent level. His directorial debut, Almost Human, was a stunning sci-fi shocker and his newest project, The Mind’s Eye, is a balls-out telekinetic war that features some insane practical effects and performances from the likes of Graham Skipper (Almost Human, Tales of Halloween), Lauren Ashley Carter (Jug Face, Darling), Noah Segan (Looper, Starry Eyes), Larry Fessenden (We Are Still Here, Late Phases), and Jeremy Gardner (The Battery, Spring).
Daily Dead recently spoke with Begos about his approach to The Mind’s Eye, and the filmmaker discussed what inspired his second feature, the importance of working with the right people and making movies that he wants to see as a genre fan, why he’ll always champion practical effects, and more.

Making a black-and-white film in the 21st century is certainly a risk, commercially, but as Darling writer/director Mickey Keating told Amfm magazine at last year's Fantastic Fest, it made complete artistic sense: "I think all the movies that I had been watching when I was writing influenced it. I just saw the world in black and white. So, it was totally 'Repulsion,' it was totally 'The Haunting'...'Shock Corridor' by Sam Fuller, it seemed right and it seemed necessary. I think that when you have that kind of gut instinct, to shy away from it, well there’s no point." Judging from the buzz on the street, Keating's gamble paid off. The film received terrific reviews at last year's Fantastic Fest and seems primed to become a word-of-mouth hit on VOD, where it's debuting on April 1 (the film will also find its way into limited theaters). The newly-released trailer is pretty fantastic,...

Glass Eye Pix and Alexander Groupe have just released the first trailer and poster for Darling, the new film by Mickey Keating, which will have its world premiere at the 11th edition of Fantastic Fest.
The psychological horror film follows a lonely young woman who moves into an old, mysterious Manhattan mansion. Hired as a caretaker, it’s not long before she discovers the estate’s haunted reputation and troubling past. These stories slowly transform into a backdrop for her twisted and violent descent into madness…
The trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect — Mickey Keating’s Darling is edited like a nightmare and scored like a hallucination by composer Giona Ostinelli, and word is, the film accomplishes terror of a completely different kind.
Darling stars Lauren Ashley Carter (Pod, Jug Face) with supporting performances by Brian Morvant, Sean Young, Larry Fessenden, John Speredakos, and Helen Rogers.

Hes got a knack for picking winners. John Dies at the End Tusk All Cheerleaders Die The Woman and Jug Face are just a few of the high quality recent pictures hes worked on. But for those who were unaware he also handled the special effects for the recently released Late Phases (available now on VOD and in select theaters) a wildly entertaining werewolf flick that features reliable genre contributor Nick Damici.

After seeing ABC’s Of Death 2 at Fantastic Fest (you can read my review of the film Here), I was able to sit down with the director of one of my favorite shorts in the anthology – Larry Fessenden. His short “N is for Nexus” is a break-neck countdown through the streets of New York as Halloween night approaches. A couple preparing their Frankenstein costumes for a party sets in motion a series of events that intersect and slowly affect one another, leading to a devastating conclusion. Fessenden is practically a legend in the indie horror genre. He has worked as an actor, cinematographer, writer and director since the later 70’s and has created a named for himself with such feature films like Habit, Wendigo, and The Last Winter, while also appearing in films like I Sell The Dead, Stake Land, and Jug Face. I was lucky enough to sit down...

We’re just over a month away from Halloween and there are no less than four major UK horror festivals on the horizon, so what better time to take a look at you choice of “home video” horror – with ten of the best independent horror movies to rent or buy on TheHorrorShow.TV
The Top 10, in no particular order, are…
Camp Dread
Mixing the slasher movie with reality TV doesn’t seem like the best idea for horror movie, especially considering the mainstream backlash against both genres, but surprisingly Camp Dread manages to overcome it’s much-maligned origins. Of course any slasher movie set at a summer camp is going to be filled with the tropes of the genre and this film is no different – although this time around the stereotypes and cliches which would typically hinder such a production actually work in its favour. By embracing what made the...

Jug Face (2013)
Written by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Directed by: Chad Crawford Kinkle
Cast: Lauren Ashley Carter (Ada), Daniel Manche (Jessaby), Larry Fessenden (Sustin), Sean Bridgers (Dawai), Alex Maizus (Emaciated Boy), Sean Young (Loriss), Mathieu Whitman (Bodey)
I gotta say that this movie could be about anything. Let me present a few possible scenarios: A poor, homely, simpleton girl that is abused by those more fortunate than her, and hopefully, she executes a cold and calculating plan of revenge using supernatural means? Nope. Maybe a backwoods girl possessed by something unholy whose only salvation is an exorcism by a righteous crusader? No, but closer than the first option.
“Jug Face” begins with Ada, a young rural girl getting crudely deflowered in the woods by her boyfriend perhaps, unfortunately more like her brother. A few weeks later, she suspects and then confirms that she is pregnant.

In the mood for some scare-ification? Then we heartily, bloodily, and spookily recommend you check out the Tales From Beyond The Pale Season 2 box set, which is released today. A series of horror-themed audio plays, Tfbtp is the brainchild of terror auteurs Larry Fessenden (Beneath) and Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead) who, according to press release-legend, conceived the idea during “a fog-drenched car ride with nothing beyond the windshield but a horizon-less void.”

Larry Fessenden has been one of the most important figures in indie horror over the last decade. Not only does he lend his acting talent to movies like You're Next, Jug Face and Session 9, but his company Glass Eye Pix produced The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, Bitter Feast, Stake Land, and many, many more. He's basically been a bit of a godsend to many young filmmakers looking to make the kinds of horror movies Hollywood doesn't. Fessenden is also a director in his own right, and his latest film hit Blu-ray and DVD this week. It's called Beneath, and it's about a group of friends who find themselves trapped on a lake by a giant, man-eating fish. And if that premise sounds delightfully old school to you, you'll be happy to know the production is as...

In past years, I’ve gone back and forth on running an end of the year list. There are always movies that are really well made, but I didn’t personally like and is it even fair to run a “Best” list when there’s the odd movie that I didn’t get a chance to see? It’s enough to drive someone insane and so I decided that we’re doing something a bit different on Daily Dead.
This year, we kick off our “Favorites of the Year” lists and the difference here is that we’re not just highlighting movies. Instead, we’re sharing our favorite genre experiences with readers this year, which could be a favorite movie, collectible, event, or even a performance.
*Note: Many “Best of” articles on other sites turn into flame wars in the comments sections with people fighting over the choices. This isn...

Let's get right to the point: 2013 was not exactly a banner year for our beloved horror genre. Oh sure, you'll always find a good batch a horror flicks over any 12-month period, but if you scour the 2013 release calendar you'll notice that A) Hollywood studios released very few horror flicks this year, and B) the indie filmmaker and distributors (as usual) really stepped in to fill that void. With that in mind, here's my list of the Top 12 horror films of the year. Yes, they're ranked in order of "favorites," but I firmly recommend each one. My #12 could be your #2. That's why we like art; we all see different things.
#1. Stoker (Fox Searchlight) -- In the hands of more pedestrian filmmakers, Stoker would probably hit the screen feeling like a sexy and slightly audacious thriller that doesn't stick in your memory bank very long. Fortunately it seems that the producers...

On Friday, October 25th, we took a trip to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to enjoy three days of premier horror programming at the Celluloid Screams film festival. Take a look in here for some of the fear-filled sights and sounds to come from the Sheffield Showroom Workstation this year.
Nestled next to Sheffield Hallam University, the Showroom Workstation cinema offers a haven for local film buffs, students and artists, and also sports one of the most impressively relaxed café bars of any film screening establishment we've been to thus far. Real ale on tap – kudos! Upon walking through the doors and approaching the box office, your attention was immediately drawn to the selection of severed body parts and cobwebs hanging at head height. This also extended to the bar and concessions stand, lending a nice kooky, spooky feeling to the weekend's events.
Pass holders for the festival also received a complimentary goodie bag on arrival,...

You know a film is disturbing when the fact that the main character voluntarily has sex with her brother is one of the less disturbing plot points. Such is the case of the indie-horror flick Jug Face, which chronicles life in a backwoods and backwards community that worships a strange pit. The pit is supposed to have legendary healing powers, but in order to stay on the pit’s good side, people must occasionally be sacrificed to it, with their throats slit so that their blood flows into the pit and satisfies the strange presence within it. How do they decide who gets given to the pit? Local man Dawai has a vision of the next victim’s face, which he then carves onto a ceremonial jug--hence the film’s title.

Director, writer, producer, and actor Larry Fessenden has slogged his way to becoming a prominent force in the horror genre over the course of more than two decades. His first film to really start turning heads was the provocative thriller No Telling (1991). He secured his place on the horror film map by writing, directing, and starring in the gritty vampire nightmare Habit (1995), which was followed by Wendigo (2001) and The Last Winter (2006).
His acting roles have ranged from brief glimpses in films like Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead (1999), Brad Anderson's Session 9 (2001), Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers (2005), and Neil Jordan’s The Brave One (2007), to leading roles in Glenn McQuaid's I Sell The Dead (2008) and Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jug Face (2013).
