The script is just terrible, unfortunately...
hanalisss25 March 2023
Just an extremely bad script.

I know for a fact the actors are good because I have watched plenty of dramas of them, so if the acting is awkward and seems forced this has nothing to do with them.

This script just makes no sense, and not talking about the fantasy genre and story, but the reactions and reasoning the characters are just too dumb not realistic at all.

Chemistry is not bad and it has some funny moments but again, everything else is just unbearable to watch.

Extremely predictable too.

I am very dissatisfied because I actually love Kim Min Gue and he doesn't get a lot of main characters, if you watch Queen Love and War he was amazing there, and also loved him on a business proposal.

I would say, watch this as a casual lighthearted drama if you don't have anything else.

Sadly Last Episodes Didn't Hold Up To The Beginning
PalmBeachG16 March 2023
See below, originally gave 8 but had to update:

I am rating an 8 but may come back and re-evaluate after the series finishes. I was really impressed at the beginning 3 episodes, and the songs that were sung were just so Heavenly that it gave me the chills. Kim Min Kyu was unbelievable in the role and got hooked in those early episodes.

It's now episode 8 and kind of think it is getting a little hokey - with the devil and now he the ML Rembray is getting human feelings and can't act on them with being a Priest and all. Feel it is worth to keep watching and enjoy it for the fantasy drama that it is - and will see how it turns out. Am wondering how the ending will be since Remarry needs to get back and the real Idol needs to get home as well. Funny in lots of parts too.

FINAL RATING UPDATE: Sadly came back to reduce my original rating of a 9. Really enjoyed the early episodes, but for me the violence got to be too much and also the ending was so boring that I dozed off daydreaming and actually had to put it on again and fast forward to the end to see it again which now I know why I dozed off after seeing the ending for the 2nd time. Could have done better.

Cute cast but not that clever or funny
phd_travel23 February 2023
Cute cast leads this rom com fantasy drama. Sadly the humour is too simplistic and some is lost in translation. Some jokes are strained and After 3 episodes I wonder if it has the ability to sustain a series. Things start off quite grandly in the fantasy world. When the story moves to modern Seoul Kim Min Kyu looks the part but his switch into modern life seems too easy as he seems to adapt without much trouble. Body swap shows have been done many times before. Usually it's fascinating but here rather crudely handled. The lead actress Ko Bo Gyeol is sweet but her character is a little annoying at times. Most of the jokes are lame weak or painful.

This might be interesting for those into what idols lives are like.

One Of The Best Dramas
The Heavenly Idol (2023)

A fantasy-romance drama about an unknown idol, Woo Yeon-woo, whose body was possessed by Rembrary, the god of this world.

Pontifex Lembrary is widely regarded as having the most powerful divine power ever. While he fights against a devil, he gets transferred to a different world. Pontifex Lembrary then finds himself in a small dormitory and possesses the body of Woo Yeon Woo, who is a member of the unpopular idol group Wild Animal. The group has been together for 3 years, but they are on the verge of disbanding due to their lack of success. 9 hours later, Pontifex Lembrary is placed on a stage with Wild Animal for a live performance at a broadcasting station. When the music begins to play, Pontifex Lembrary, in Woo Yeon Woo's body, shouts out, "I don't know how to dance." The live broadcast performance is a disaster, but it attracts the attention of people and the media. With his charms, including a confident attitude, Woo Yeon Woo, still possessed by Pontifex Lembrary's spirit, becomes popular, and so does his group Wild Animal. Pontifex Lembrary must now get used to life as a member of an idol group, and he faces various troubles, like dealing with weird religious groups and the devil.

One Of The Best Drama I've watched so far. Kim Min-kyu is one of my favourite actors this is my first time watching go bo-gyeol and I am loving it it's really hard for me to wait for more episodes but the story makes it worth waiting.

Wow just Wow
soarer-866-76840824 February 2023
I can't believe people actually like this show. The acting is horrendous and the writing is also. This is like some immature kid show I could watch on Disney channel. I am a huge fan of K drama/romantic comedies, but there is no depth to this show. The fantasy aspect is ok and something different, but the 2 actors have no connection and doesn't play to their strengths. It seems this crop of new shows coming out of Korea are almost being forced out since they are popular to people. How about they take their time and bring a product that can be enjoyed by everyone. Ko Bo Gyeol seems lost in the show because of the writers and Kim Min Kyu has looks, but zero acting skills.

Really good drama! Seems to be suitable among young people. Because there is a lot of comedy! Hahaha i like it. Please I will give many stars! For spoilers I'll just say that it's a happy ending! So it's nothing to worry about. To the director, thank you for presenting this drama. To Kim mingue and Go Bogyeol, you guys are really good at acting, I hope this drama gets the light at the awards later. I'm proud of you. You guys are soooo cute haha. I wish you success always, and I support you alwaysuuuu! I can't say which country I'm from, because I prefer this secret identity of mine. Thank You.

Not Good Enough
PennyReviews27 July 2023
Korean Drama " Heavenly Idol " is a fantasy drama about a heavenly priest who suddenly becomes an idol.

Right from the beginning, the drama doesn't take itself seriously and it continues with the light, silly mood till the very ending. Thus, the whole heavenly politics/battle of good and evil was set aside and was underdeveloped, especially since it wasn't easy to make the viewer care for them when the rest of the story is a comedy.

The romance was another part of the drama that was awkward. It could easily be omitted actually without any effect on the main plot, as the couple didn't have chemistry as lovers and were better off as friends. Not to mention that their romantic encounters were few.

Finally, the performances were enjoyable by everyone in the cast and the CGI good enough.

So, overall, four out of ten.

Good premise but it can't decide if it wants to be supernatural or about idols
leahcubed29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
9/10 is my rating. This iis a 2023 South Korean fantasy romance drama with x, 70 minute episodes.

First I provide a synopsis then review.

Synopsis

Rembrary (Kim Min-kyu), is a high priest battling evil to keep the Devil from returning to power. Mid battle with the actual devil, he is transported from this alternate world to modern South Korea in the body of Woo Yoon-woo, a failed idol in the process of making a comeback. Yoon-woo aspired to be an actor but was debuted as the visual for boy band Wild Animals. Rembrary is completely confused by this sudden switch but quickly finds that the dark forces have also come to this world and are embedded in the music industry. Kim Dal (Go Bo-gyeol) was a former talent manager for a girl group and became extremely depressed and guilt ridden when one of the group members committed suicide. She feels beholden to Yoon-woo as he gave her hope during one of her darkest days. She follows the band closely and when she notices they are struggling she prizes the job of their manager determined to give them the professional and emotional support to avoid any more tragedy. At first she goes along with Yoon-woo's "delusion" he is a high priest from another dimension and convinces him the best way to achieve his goals is to become a successful idol. And the thing is the real Yoon-woo has also been transported to Rembrary's world but he doesn't want to leave. Who wants to go back to being a failed idol with a non existent acting career? So the real Yoon-woo strikes a bargain. If Rembrary becomes a successful idol, and in a whisper voice, that Rembrary dldn't hear, a successful actor, he will swap back with him. The situation makes for a very comedic setting, but also a slow build romance between the manager who is going crazy, trying to manage this delusional idol, and the high priest who doesn't usually give in to worldly concerns.

Review Overqll this is very good. The leads have a lot of chemistry and their relationship is believable. I love the idol genre because it is such a unique life choice so glimpses into it are always interesting. The relationship between the group members is compelling and getting to know a bit about each makes it interesting. Highly recommend to those that like romances and the idol genre. It ends happy.

Spoilers* The god aspect was a bit chaotic and did not make complete sense. I felt as frustrated as he did when it turned out that after decades of fighting evil, Redlin was selfish and evil Herself. With that it would have made sense if he was a true god but her having made him from a part of herself made less sense. In the end there is just no God or devil in that world? If she wasn't a true God then what? There just never was? How did she come into being if there was no divine in that realm? That seemed like a big, important part of that world. He goes to Redlin to confront her and she tries to kill hIm and steal his divine powers but is stopped at the last second when Kim Dal essentially offers up her soul to destroy Redlin's power. But then he goes back for seconds? That made no sense. The he is back as an idol and is just going to hang out? I mean he got a mission of rounding up the remaining evil elements but it didn't show him pursuing that. I was disappointed we didn't get to see "Wild Animal" perform. They achieved success but we really did not get to go along for the ride much. It seemed more focused on his divine goals but that was so ill defined that being the greater focus was disappointing. Kim Min Kyu really just carried it because his acting and visuals made even the most chaotic plot points watchable. The Grim Reaper was confusing as he was supposed to be there to keep him from interfering in human lifelines but he winds up doing very little of that. He mostly seems to take the road manager thing seriously like okay I am not a reaper I am just doing this now, But then he is but then he isn't. And how, even when their fame was growing, were they able to just go out without being recognized? They are popular enough to win an award but where are the groups of screaming fans every time they emerge? How many times are Min-kyu and Kim Dal going to walk out on a balcony and get all affectionate knowing there could be scandal. Just have your emotional moments inside. He would say he wanted to be a successful idol or actor and put a bunch of effort into it for a minute then be like never mind I am doing the divine thing now. Then the end, the God says Kim Dal will be punished because she won't remember those she loved but there she us right there doing the same thing and it only takes her a brief direct encounter to remember. That made it feel rushed like there could have been at least one episode with her not remembering but things triggering her memory. I liked the premise just wish it was written in a more logical manner.

#KimMinKyu #GoBogyeol #LeeJangWoo #HeavenlyIdol.

An Interesting plot ruined by terrible writing and terrible acting
daaaf-4641325 May 2024
The plot is interesting had they not make the casts act like some walking airheads. Go Bo Gyeol character is very disturbing starting off as an obsessive fan then a manager who's job is just to say whatever as long as she looks cute on camera. Being a boringly cute face and being a fan are her only personalities. Nothing else. Terrible acting too. Why is she acting like some high school kid all shy and weird when she has a professional job as a manager? Also, Kim Min Kyu being a some sort of a priest acts like an idiot instead. He's just switching bodies not pulling out his brain ffs. No romantic chemistry whatsoever. Like uncle and niece.

I've cringed watching cheesy Kdramas, a feeling that sometimes i actually enjoy to just switch off my brain and chill, but this one is just plain bad.

They both did great in their previous series. I was excited to finally watch KMK as a lead character too. Disappointing, really.

A Fun Rom-Com with an Innocent Air
fake_moviestar27 March 2023
The Heavenly Idol is quite frankly a perfect romantic comedy. It has a very wide range cast of characters that are all so much fun to watch, with each one adding a little bit of flair to the overall plot line.

The story is fun, interesting, and just different enough to make it stand out from the crowd. The ML is such a wonderful character, just naive enough that the situations he finds himself in are ridiculous in a believable way that create genuine humor for the viewer. The romance is more of a subplot, but it is well done with a really great female lead who is both smart and strong.

I thought that 12 episodes was the perfect length to have a well fleshed-out story line without dragging it out or rushing the plot points. The portrayal of K-pop idols definitely gives fans something to think about, as their favorite idols are often mistreated and go through a lot of hardship to get into the spotlight, and I found watching this little group of idols very rewarding and interesting.

Overall I this is well worth the watch for any rom-com fan!
