In Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man," the title hero (Robert Downey Jr.) was assisted in his high-tech superhero lab by an artificially intelligent butler-like presence named J.A.R.V.I.S. Iron Man's digital butler not only wrangled the hero's complicated engineering projects, but also controlled the even-higher-tech devices in his lab. When Iron Man went out on patrol, J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice could be heard inside his helmet. J.A.R.V.I.S. was voiced by Paul Bettany. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to grow, so too did Iron Man's computerized friend. Eventually, J.A.R.V.I.S. was shunted into an indestructible android body and renamed Vision (also Bettany).
When Vision became sentient and autonomous, that meant Tony Stark had to program a new computer helper, and invented F.R.I.D.A.Y. (voiced by Kerry Condon...

Tens of thousands of music fans braved the desert heat for three days at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California to witness six of the biggest hard rock and metal bands of all time perform at the inaugural Power Trip festival. On Sunday (October 8th), Metallica and Tool had the honor of closing out the festivities.
As previously reported, Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden kicked off the festival on Friday (October 6th), while AC/DC (playing their first show in seven years) and Judas Priest rocked the middle day on Saturday (October 7th).
Tool took the stage first on Sunday at Empire Polo Club, having previously played the first-ever Coachella festival there in 1999 and Coachella again in 2006.
Kicking things off with “Jambi” from 10,000 Days, Tool performed a career-spanning 12-song set that included songs from their debut full-length album, Undertow, through their latest effort, 2019’s Fear Inoculum. Of all their albums,...

Exclusive: DreamWorks Animation is making cuts and slashing 4% of its staff. We understand that the cuts are due to the downward cyclical turn in the business, rising production costs and the strikes.
“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a Dwa spokesperson told Deadline in a statement. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.”
The hope is the studio can turn things around with the release of the third installment of the Trolls movie franchise. Trolls Band Together is set to be released November 17 with *Nsync reuniting after 22 years to perform a song for the film’s soundtrack. Voice actors for the animated motion picture include Justin Timberlake, Anna Kendrick, Camila Cabello, Eric André, Kid Cudi, Troye Sivan, Daveed Diggs, Amy Schumer, RuPaul, Kenan Thompson and more.

You have to squint awfully hard to see a unifying plot theme on Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 4, but it's not impossible.
While the women are having their Orion adventure -- engaging in deadly drinking games, exploring hump dungeons, and examining the perils of defying expectations (mostly lots of stabbing) -- the guys have to delve deep into conflict resolution strategies.
It's a delightful reversal of traditional gender norms and a helluva hoot at the same time.
It's a matter of record that while Orions have been represented in multiple Trek series and films, they are a species never truly included in core Starfleet until D'vana Tendi joined the Cerritos.
Over the run of Lower Decks, she has refuted many of the stereotypes that have persisted ever since Tos Kirk cut his swath through a cross-section of female aliens.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 4, titled "Something Borrowed, Something Green," takes place largely on the Orion homeworld, the place where Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) hails from. She is there to attend the wedding of her sister D'Erica but also to face the familial legacy she deliberately left behind when she joined Starfleet. The episode features a lot of lingering sororal resentment and multiple mysterious, violent, sexy figures from Tendi's past.
More important to Trekkies, however, are the numerous details about Orion life. "Something Borrowed" is the first time we've really had a good look at the Orions and what they're like in their element.
Orions, of course, first appeared on "Star Trek" as early as the "Original Series" pilot, "The Cage," when Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was seduced by a green-skinned woman at a Roman-style orgy.

This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.
With over a half-century of TV shows and films to sort through, I'm always surprised at how well each new "Star Trek" show manages to connect back to the official canon. Sure, "Star Trek" has been subject to many a retcon over the years – including several welcome improvements to outdated '60s Trek – but for a franchise with 12 shows to its name, it's often kept its lore surprisingly tidy.
With its late place in Trek chronology and "second contact" premise, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" has always been especially good at pointing out plot holes and updating mythology, and now, with its latest season, Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome) have become a part of that mythology. Between seasons 3 and 4 of the animated series, the dynamic (and chaotic) duo popped over to "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," making a live-action...

When Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered in the summer of 2020 — so long ago that its streaming home at the time was called CBS All Access, rather than Paramount+ — it seemed caught between two potentially incompatible goals. On the one hand, the animated series, run by Mike McMahan, wanted to satirize all of the most ridiculous ideas the Star Trek franchise had introduced since the mid-20th century. And on the other, it wanted to tell genuine, thrilling Star Trek stories, set a decade or so after the events of the various Nineties spinoffs.

Metallica’s James Hetfield, who just celebrated his 60th birthday, rocked on at the MetLife Stadium last week in New Jersey.
It was the rock band’s second night for their North American leg of their M72 World Tour, in support of their latest album released in April, 72 Seasons.
The beginning of their North American tour included a “No Repeat Weekend,” which meant the August 4 and August 6 audiences each heard different setlists. A treat to many, the band had always planned to perform for two nights in each city they visited.

Charlie Kaufman is known for his mind-bending script work on projects like “Adaptation” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” But his next project will be entirely more genial – an original DreamWorks Animation feature called “Orion and the Dark,” coming to Netflix in 2024. The announcement was made at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as part of a larger DreamWorks panel.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the project stars Jacob Tremblay as Orion, a scaredy-cat indoor kid (described in the official synopsis as “a ball of adolescent anxiety”) and Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, the living embodiment of the night and the thing Orion is most scared of. Director Sean Charmatz, a DreamWorks veteran of the “Trolls Holiday Special,” stressed that, even though it’s a DreamWorks movie on Netflix it “has all of the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it.” (Kaufman previously worked on “Kung Fu Panda 2” for the studio.

Dreamworks Animation announced Tuesday during the Annecy International Animation Festival that production of Orion and the Dark, an animated feature penned by Charlie Kaufman, will come to Netflix in 2024.
Based on the book by Emma Yarlett, the story follows Orion, an anxious young boy voiced by Jacob Tremblay, who is afraid of the dark. Then, the literal embodiment of his worst fear — “the Dark” (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser) — pays him a visit to prove there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown and embrace the joy of living.
“It has the Charlie Kaufman stuff in it,” said producer Peter McCown of the offbeat story by the Oscar winner, whose writing credits include Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Anomolisa and Synecdoche, New York.
