The late rapper Tupac Shakur and Seattle-based rockers Pearl Jam lead a class of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees that also include folkie Joan Baez and 1970s favorites Journey, Yes and Electric Light Orchestra.
The rock hall also said Tuesday it would give a special award to Nile Rodgers, whose disco-era band Chic failed again to make the cut after its 11th time nominated.
Baez will be inducted only months after her 1960s paramour, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
The Hall's 32nd annual induction ceremony will take place on April 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. HBO will show highlights later, with SiriusXM doing a radio broadcast.

The San Francisco Giants advanced to the World Series last night, with a walk-off three-run home run to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals. In bigger news, the victory extends the At&T Park residency of Journey's Steve Perry, the diehard Giants fan who's turned every San Francisco home game into a personal concert. For some, i.e. Perry, the Giants are just the warm-up act for his animated lip-syncing of his own stadium-thumping songs in between innings, like last night's rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'". Perry is obviously a big fan of the hometown Giants, and he's been driving the...

Ex-Journey frontman Steve Perry's return to the stage was welcomed with open arms. The near-reclusive singer, who hasn't performed live in almost 20 years after getting "burned out" on performing with Journey following a hip injury in 1998, made a guest appearance with indie rockers Eels in St. Paul, Minnesota, singing two Journey songs and one Eels cut. Perry hasn't performed with Journey since 1991, and the last time he was onstage was in 1995, in support of his second solo album, "For the Love of Strange Medicine. In surprise encore, frmr Journey-er Steve Perry joins @the_Eels in St. Paul: http://t.

The story of Arnel Pineda's rise from nightclub singer in the Philippines to the frontman of Journey is fairly well-known -- he's been with the band, after all, for about five years now.
But it's a really good story, which is why PBS' "Independent Lens" series has picked up a documentary about Pineda's Journey experience. "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" played at several film festivals last year and is set to make its TV debut Sept. 30 (check your local PBS listings).
At the TCA summer press tour Tuesday (Aug. 6), Pineda and Journey's Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and Ross Valory recounted how Schon found Pineda by searching YouTube, apprehensions the band had about hiring Pineda and some less-than-welcoming fan responses.
Cain recalls a tour date in one city -- he doesn't say which one -- where "people sat with their arms folded" for about the first half-hour of the show...

Ex-Journey singer Steve Perry recently opened up about his battle with cancer, thankfully revealing to fans that he'll likely be just fine.
In a blog post on his Fan Asylum page, Perry revealed that he underwent surgery for melanoma, after he had a mole removed and the lab report came back with a diagnosis of skin cancer.
"I've had two surgeries in two weeks to remove all the cancer cells and I've been told they think they got it all and no other treatments are required," he wrote on June 6.
The "Don't Stop Believin'" singer also opened up to fans about losing his girlfriend Kellie Nash, who died of breast cancer that ultimately spread to her brain, last December.
Perry wrote that he was in the editing room with a friend who was putting the finishing touches on a Lifetime breast cancer special called "Five," when he noticed Nash, who was featured in the program.
