Barbie co-writer/director Greta Gerwig dug in when it came to actor Ryan Gosling‘s big dance number, “I’m Just Ken.”
Studio executives questioned the part in the script that indicated: “And then it becomes a dream ballet and they work it out through dance.” Gerwig envisioned that number to mirror the iconic, “Singing in the Rain.” She won her argument with executives but later held her breath, wondering if her gut was right.
‘Barbie’ needed a ‘dream ballet’
Gerwig recalled being summoned into a “big meeting” where she was asked “‘Do you need this?’” she recalled, People reports.
“I was like, ‘Everything in me needs this,'” Gerwig said. “They were like, ‘What do you even mean? What is a dream ballet?’ And I was like, ‘A dream ballet? Where do I begin!'”
The scene in question was set in an empty room filled with Kens dressed in black.

HGTV Bargain Block house-flipping stars Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas admit they had no idea what they were in for when they moved from Denver, Colorado to Detroit, Michigan.
The construction and design couple found house flipping in Denver “cost prohibitive” so they sought an emerging market with promise: Detroit.
“The market was really tricky to navigate and you had to have just so much cash. So we were looking for a market that would have made our job a little easier,” Bynum explained to Showbiz Cheat Sheet.
“So a little over six years ago I flew out on my birthday actually to Detroit, never been here,” he admitted. “Saw eight houses. Put offers on two, we got one of them and we sold our place in Colorado and moved out here. We thought the house was livable, but it wasn’t. It looked nice from the outside. As fall creeps closer, major studios have to plan out their next steps if writers and actors continue to strike. At this point it’s already impossible for the fall production schedule to move forward normally, even if the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) went back to work today.
Some outlets, like Paramount Global have already announced they’ll use reruns of streaming and older network shows to fill in programming gaps this fall. New data from Civic Science is showing that viewers could respond to such tactics, at least initially.

Civic Science’s numbers show that 58% of audiences would be at least somewhat likely to watch a rerun on network television channels like ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC during the strike.

Ashley Graham appears to have lost even more weight in a recent Instagram post as she celebrated her new TV series.
In one post, her noticeably slimmer face is shown while she wears a silky white top with feathered cuffs as she pops open a bottle of rosé. The champagne opening was just a glimpse of her Barbie-themed party as she stood in front of a pink tinsel curtain.
Last month, the mother-of-two shared her secret to smooth skin, noting gua sha as her preference over fillers. In addition to smooth skin, gua sha also provides a temporary slimming effect, which may explain Graham’s trimmed facial appearance.
While that could be a possible explanation for her smaller face, her body transformation caught the attention of many fans. In May, the Sports Illustrated model faced criticism after flaunting a more toned figure at the Cannes Film Festival.

Discovery’s Shark Week has been a TV institution for 35 years, a summertime staple that has never changed its core purpose: Celebrating the great white and its brethren.
But a lot has changed around Shark Week in the decades since, including an explosion of popularity, more competition, a few controversies and one giant corporate acquisition. In 2023, the Warner Bros. Discovery-produced TV event now has a few more boxes to check: From keeping its linear ratings (which grew 10% year-over-year in 2022) up to driving customers to two streaming platforms, Max and Discovery+. Shark Week has also been enlisted to help promote other TV shows and movies in the Wbd family. But it also faces lingering concerns over the makeup of its programming (often criticized for lacking enough scientific research or proper experts), while simultaneously competing with younger copycat programming from rival companies Nat Geo’s Sharkfest.

Allison Holker made a special return to TV on Sunday night!
The professional dancer made a cameo appearance on HGTV’s “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge”, where she helped design professionals Ty Pennington and Alison Victoria bring their disco-themed living room to life. Holker’s appearance was special, as it was the show she was supposed to host with her late husband, Stephen “tWitch” Boss.
Pennington and Victoria had the right idea as they created the perfect place to disco, but didn’t have the moves to match the room. That’s when Holker made her entrance to help the design duo sell their space with a little boogie.

After nearly a year of box office misfires, Warner Bros. has ended its losing streak in the biggest way imaginable with “Barbie,” which scored a $162 million opening and become one of the studio’s top five highest-opening weekends in history.
It is also the first major theatrical victory for the new Warner leadership under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who called on his team early this year to build an all-in marketing campaign internally called “Operation Barbie Summer” to promote to the world writer-director Greta Gerwig’s unique vision of the most famous doll ever made across the media portfolio created by the company’s merger last year.
The results speak for themselves. Along with this strong opening, “Barbie” has an A on CinemaScore and scores of 4.5/5 from general audiences on PostTrak and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. With no films expected to open over $40 million for the rest of the summer,...

We’re gonna need more pink! As Mattel’s globally beloved Barbie hits theaters for her first live-action film, HGTV presents Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, a four-part competition set within a life-size version of the 11.5-inch doll’s iconic abode. The series premieres Sunday, July 16 at 8/7c on the network. “We thought, let’s create a brick-and-mortar location for something that hasn’t existed but [taps] the nostalgia of the people that watch our network,” notes HGTV head of content Loren Ruch, who was also behind 2019’s equally evocative A Very Brady Renovation. “Then we [added] a competition layer.” Hosted by model and past Barbie inspiration Ashley Graham, the series tasks eight pairs of celebrity designers—including Egypt Sherrod, Ty Pennington, Alison Victoria, and Food Network’s Antonia Lofaso (Beachside Brawl)—with tricking out an assigned space in a Barbie-worthy Los Angeles–area manse. The doll was introduced in 1959, so each area corresponds...

The PSAs bolster Mattel’s decades-long work with Save the Children, including the Barbie Dream Gap Project. They begin airing on Friday. In the U.S., donations will support Save the Children’s early education, summer and after school programming.

Phil Breman, the head of live-action series development for Mattel, knows the primal power of a good toy.
Breman, a veteran of Disney, where he oversaw live-action scripted programming, and NBCUniversal, where he handled all creative and production elements on shows like “Kenan” and “Timeless”, is helping adapt Mattel properties like “Monster High” and “Hot Wheels” for new audiences. This could mean turning “Monster High” into a live-action series or turning “Hot Wheels” into “Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge,” a show where winners will see their car turned into an actual Hot Wheels collectible.
“Audiences want to be engaged,” he told The Wrap for this week’s Office With a View. “They want to have true emotional connection. That’s what’s going to keep someone watching from week to week.”
Perhaps the most exciting project Breman has in the works is “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge,” coming to HGTV on July 16, which...

While Harry Potter and Game of Thrones may have scored the biggest headlines at this morning’s newly rebranded Max launch event, one of the more understated nuggets was the handful of unscripted originals coming to the service.
Kathleen Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks Group, revealed four new projects that will premiere on the service – dating series Love and Translation, adventure series Survive The Raft, Barbie Dream House Challenge and Octavia Spencer-exec produced true-crime series Lost Women of Highway 20.
This comes after the previous incarnation, HBO Max, moved out of unscripted originals, having previously made series such as FBoy Island, Legendary and Selena + Chef, under Jen O’Connell’s leadership.
However, these new Max originals are part of a shared universe, that will see these shows also air on Discovery+, which is remaining as a standalone service, as well as linear channels,...
