Long overdue
joeanythinggoes28 May 2023
Sarah Silverman is definitely one of my top 5 female comedians of all time, and yes that means she's my fifth favorite female comedian. It's good to finally see her back on stage and long overdue because Louis ck, who has been exiled, should not have more stand-up specials than you filming from his underground hideout of shame. Sarah has a unique style of comedy, she doesn't try to be anyone else but herself. Her stand-up is a raw unfiltered rollercoaster of random thoughts and topics from someone having a manic episode. If you enjoy her style of humor, you'll like this, if not odds are you won't, but in any case it's something to watch to make the time go by.

I love stand up comedies, i didn't knew Sarah Silverman. This is probably the worst stand up comedy i have watched. It's not bad though. She is definitely smart and funny and this tv special was not boring at all. This was funny., just not hilarious. I was smiling but i didn't laugh even once. Other reviewers wrote that this is not her best job. She has a good reputation judging from what i read here, however this was not very good. I 'll keep an eye on her, i don't feel that i 've wasted my time because this was enjoyable. If you are a fan of stand up comedy and got plenty of time, maybe you should watch it. For sure, there are far better stand up comedies to watch if you don't have much time to spend.

NOT HER BEST
tkdlifemagazine30 May 2023
I think Sarah Silverman is very funny and I like her very much. She is smart and insightful and she was on the cutting edge of pushing the boundaries of open sexuality in female comics. She has a great history of very funny and sexy stand up comedy. Her latest stand up special, "Someone You Love" is just not that funny. It has some good commentary on religion, social issues, and politics; however, it is just not as funny as I am used to with Silverman. I would still watch it if you are a fan of hers, and of stand up, in general, but not her best performance, for sure. I felt the best description is "low energy".

Sarah Silverman isn't funny anymore

Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure how to describe this stand-up special, because I really want people to understand my perception of it. Listen, I started watching 'The Daily Show' with Jon Stewart back in (maybe) 1996, I don't recall. The skits, the jokes, the way they poked fun at society, religion & politics was hilarious... for 1996. Sarah's 'Someone You Love' HBO special felt like that. It was comical (dot dot dot) 27 years ago. But see we've heard all the puns and watched all the skits for decades, and (well) naturally the show grew/matured over this time. Jon Stewart moved on. They got a new host, new writers, and it changed with the times. It had to to be more relevant for the kids today. It needed new material and fresh mirth. Sarah didn't bring that in her special. She's making the same observations that everyone has already done, but it's 27 years later. I've listened to Sarah talk about abortion, Hitler, Catholics, the vagina, and of course diarrhea for so long, that it's monotonous. It's as if Sarah is going backwards as a comic. It's like she's stealing material from an old dive-bar comedian, and hoping we won't notice. Her wit is old, tired, and irrelevant. She's stuck in a bubble. It's exhausting listening to her preach about the exact same things. She's a broken record that I simply can't listen to any longer.

Some entertaining parts of the special came towards the end. Sarah seemed more relaxed. She stopped projecting at the audience and became more social. She engaged with the audience members, and it got some laughs. It was nice hearing her chat with Mrs Martin-Epstein, although it felt constructed to me. I assumed the woman was planted in the front row convivially. It was the pretense of a natural occurrence (IMHO). The end of the show had Sarah singing a silly song (probably written by her sister Laura again). Laura's contributions were Sarah's greatest strengths. The familiarity of it was delightful. It was a song about bad breath, and she sang it to a lovely piano melody. It gave me a smile. I always loved the songs they did on the 'Sarah Silverman Program'. The ending itself left me with a deep sadness. I questioned what happened to that edgy comedy Silverman was always known for... Where's the shock value? Where's the stuff she so boldly exclaimed in her youth? The controversy is gone. The wow factor is empty. She's playing it safe, and I can't help but imagine Sarah Silverman is too scared to stir up a ruckus. I think she's terrified of getting cancelled. And so she isn't as amusing as she once was. 4 stars for this show. I would suggest waiting for the return of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

Impeccable Timing. Very Funny.
ntc12329 May 2023
After decades of performing stand-up comedy, Sarah Silverman's comedic timing is awesome. She is so intelligent, and this intelligence comes through in the way she crafts and presents her humor.

Yes, it is a presentation for adults and some of her humor and/or language may offend you, but that humor is thought provoking besides being very funny.

I admire her originality and the way she uses the English language. When she said that the title of her memoir will be "My Struggle" and that she can just see the surprised faces of some of the buyers when it is translated into German, she made me laugh out loud.

Rarely, have I enjoyed an hour of stand-up comedy so much. I look forward to seeing her next special.

This special is titled, "Someone you love." Yes, I do.

On brand, quite bland.
jeremy-0628629 May 2023
Back in the day, Sarah had this incredible ability to catch us off guard with her sharp wit. She would have us in stitches, never knowing what hilarious remark she would come up with next. But now, it's like she's lost her comedic mojo and is stuck on autopilot. It's like watching a rerun of a tired sitcom you've seen a million times before.

You know the jokes before she does... "But there are Nazis", "All Jewish mothers are proud", "I have a gay friend and we might've scissored but not really, or did we, no we didn't". It's just tired and gross, but not gross enough to move into the really offensive (Where comedic gold is mined), it was safe. No effort to push any boundaries, just completely safe and predictable.

Some comedians are funny only in reaction to others, I could imagine her on 8 out 10 cats does countdown, or raising money for leukaemia patients, perhaps if she performed her set for the west-borough baptist's she could eek out a chuckle.

For The Grown-Ups In The Room
trollkillah29 May 2023
Sarah Silverman kills, in this stand-up special, on HBO!

It's definitely NOT for everyone. It's for the grown-ups in the room. If you're easily offended / triggered / upset, yada, yada, yada, DON"T watch this. If you're a long time fan, you won't be disappointed by this, her latest in her "struggle".

She does some very thought provoking comedy, in front of a live, Boston audience. The audience is positively responsive from start to finish.

As I mentioned earlier, Sarah Silverman is NOT for everyone; her brand of comedy crosses so many lines, that in today's day and age, it's a breath of fresh air for a comic to be truly themselves and not feel threatened by big "CC", Cancel Culture.

Sarah pokes her finger straight into the eye of CC and doesn't look back. Enjoy!

Is this AI generated jokes?
Who wrote this material? Sarah Silverman is generally funny when she is in interviews and the like, she clearly has a sense of humor so it is hard for me to believe this is her material, if it is she really lost it, in fact the only funny moments seem to be when she goes off script and reacts to the audience.

She hits all the usual themes that have been done so much it must be AI generated because AI would think this is what's funny based on previous data.

We get some holocaust jokes which when they are not funny just come off as disturbing. Then we have the sexual identity jokes, making fun of Catholics and kid abuse, pro-choice jokes that sound like she is sarcastic and making fun of pro choice people because they are so unfunny and finally some good ole toilet humor at which point I stopped watching. Not because of the themes because I really don't care but because I didn't laugh, in case you think I'm a prude and don't like those type jokes I'll leave you with one:

2 bad guys grab 2 nuns and start assaulting them.

One nun says: Father forgive them for they know not what they do.

The other says: Shut up mine does.

Most pedestrian and trite comedy special I've ever seen...
emeraldcitypodcast3 June 2023
Oh how the mighty have fallen. Sarah used to be one of the top 4 comedians, PERIOD. Now, I wouldn't put her in the top ten of she/hers. Comedy is supposed to have a revolutionary element to it. Joe Biden would approve of every single joke in this. There is nothing counter culture in this entire special. "Nazi's are bad!" Wow really pushing the boundaries there 🙄 talking about flicking your own bean? Never heard that, at an open mic. The only thing more dried up and squandered than Sarah's career, is her ovaries at this point.

The girl who wasn't afraid to do black face, (because it was hilarious) is long gone, and she will be greatly missed.....

Comedy doesn't get any better than this
GrammarMatters8 January 2024
I think many of the low ratings in these reviews are people who don't like her politics, or they are so uptight they don't like shocking, cutting edge, daring comedy.

I love it. Sarah has perfected her timing and she's so funny because she dares to go past safe boring jokes to lines that would fail miserably if delivery was attempted by a less talented comic.

I look forward to her next routine, and will certainly watch everything else I can, just because there are other mainstream comics out there that are just BORING.

Maybe I like the risky comedy that goes a bit over the line, and this sort of critique of society isn't what many people enjoy - but I just can't see how comedy can get much better than this - but everybody is not the same - and I guess these jokes make some people uncomfortable. Too bad for them.

She's still pretty good.
beanofdoom31 May 2023
I can tell you that back in the day, when I'd see her around, she was one of my favorites. I was a kid then though. I remember being super impressed when she was on Star Trek Voyager. Honestly though she kind of fell of the radar for me since the 90s. I didn't even realize she was still around until she hosted the Daily Show. I made it a point to watch all the ones she did and they were great. Took me a little while to get to this, but it was entertaining. She's still pretty good. Not as many laugh out loud moments as I recall from back in the day, nothing so groundbreaking, but the jokes all land and her stage persona is still really likeable. I'd give this a watch if you were ever a fan. 8/10.

Sarah Silverman's best standup special yet
spankywzl-4102631 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Sarah Silverman, as she mentions in this, her.4th standup special, has been at this for decades. Many comic's acts get milder and more mellow with age. It is kinda to be expected. We saw it with Carlin, although only very slightly, and we have seen it with Chappelle, who has postured himself more a philosopher these days than a gut busting, guffaw inducing funny comedian. I was a little worried that Sarah might have longer stories, or more songs, and that she might have decided to phone this one in... Not on your life, Buster! This is some well honed stand up right here. The actual interruptions and interactions with the audience played well and she handled them with professional aplomb, but the written material was punchy and direct and filled with laugh inducing set ups and closers. Her delivery was maybe more mature in timbre, but natural and with her usual telekinetic wink at the irony . Silverman has never been known for keeping her opinions to herself, and like most successful stand up comics, and most comedy in general, surprise! She leans left. I love her work, maybe because I am a Gen Xer too, and our generation can watch a film, or stand up act without bringing our political baggage with us for the viewing. Bottom line is, This is Sarah Silverman's best stand up special so far.

With the possible exception to a bit about Pu$$ies and balls, which premise I already heard Betty White expound upon, this special hat a lot of meat on the bone and precious little fat. No matter your side of the aisle, you should be able to laugh at Sarah's observations in this tight and funny 52 minute set.

Good ol' Sarah hasn't lost her goofy touch not by one bit and manages to showcase her maturity.
diegogualamant2 July 2023
It had been a while since I made contact with any of Sarah's contents, but I was aware that she became much more political in the recent years while doing her podcast. I was kinda expecting that she would try and emphasize political points in this special... BUT NO, NOT AT ALL! Sarah delivers flawlessly joke after joke in the most inventive, unexpected and refreshingly childish ways; her essence hasn't changed a bit, It's only gotten better... Things are just a little bit different (but in a very good way): Her entire experience and maturity is displayed at all times. I did, in fact, laugh out loud with 80% of the jokes. Her body language has become one of her sharpest and funniest assets. I genuinely felt proud of her for assembling such course of ideas onto this special. I definitely say go for it. Great job, Sarah and her team!
