Interesting And Reflective
Interesting and reflective. The most appropriate adjective to describe this debut film by Nicola Santi Amantini is "provoking". And to think that I was skeptical about this movie at first! My initial doubts were caused by what I had read earlier: in my opinion a full-length film is a big ask for a first time director, and to shoot a debut feature with a single actor, and set it in a single claustrophobic location, well that seemed like a kind of experimental mission impossible. Well, I was wrong. This film by Santi Amantini surprised me in many ways, especially the subject matter – this is a topic people want to shy away from, as if it were something wicked to keep hidden in the shadows, but in my opinion allowing it to build up is an even greater evil. The theme of the film involves a seminarian suffering a crisis of faith, a subject rarely dealt with in cinema. This is the strong point of the movie, that it offers something new, with no debt to external sources of inspiration, as too much respect for source material can hamper a director's vision. The greatest revelation has to be the performance of the actor Lorenzo Berti. His performance is excellent, and I would say perfectly suited to this film. "Not lead us into temptation" is dark film, and the solitude we share with the protagonist might risk becoming monotonous, but this monotony helps us to understand the seminarian's crisis of faith as he faces his demons, or "Temptation", alone. The way the director frames the final face-off between the seminarian and "Temptation" (the latter also played by Lorenzo Berti) is quite remarkable, as are the detailed images of the opening sequence. This is definitely a film that will be widely discussed, both for its content and how it was shot, in the sense that many will be turned off by the slow pace set by the filmmaker. As I understand it, this monotony is the real strength of the film, because when you are alone, everything becomes monotonous, and what passes in front of us are long days, empty and wrapped in silence, which are occupied in this film by the struggle between good and evil, between inner thought and sinful thought, that eats into the life of the seminarian. The Lorenzo Berti's performance as "Temptation" has considerable depth, and is as involving as it is malevolent (with a little wink of the eye to Ledger's Joker). The soundtrack is also very intriguing and fitting, emphasizing the atmosphere of the film as a whole. The first appearance of "Temptation" in particular is very powerful. The choice to shoot the film almost entirely in black and white is also interesting. The result is very elegant, and gives a very dark image to the film, which only adds to the atmosphere. Less successful is the moment where the main character decides to watch Nanni Moretti's Ecce Bombo: in my opinion references in one film to another are to be avoided, as they take us out of the drama. However, this is a marginal defect in what is otherwise a very strong film. In closing, "Not Lead us into Temptation" is a very convincing debut. It is a very special and thoughtful film, especially the final scenes, which I do not intend to "spoil". My compliments to the director, Santi Amantini. Enjoy the film!
