Shogun Lead Star Hiroyuki Sanada Reportedly Renews Deal for a Season 2 - Main Image
Shōgun, the historical drama series based on the bestselling novel by James Clavell, made waves earlier this year, topping streaming charts and earning universal praise.
The limited series has left many wondering if another instalment is in the works. Deadline shares that the lead star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada is set to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, sparking renewal buzz for the highly acclaimed FX series.
This update surprised most fans since Shōgun’s 10-episode format mirrored the source material. “We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence,” says show co-creator Justin Marks. “We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place.”
However, in a separate interview,...

The satirical spy-thriller “The Sympathizer” hopes to make a mark at the Primetime Emmys this year, as HBO/Max has submitted the show for 27 Emmy categories. The hopeful bids from creators Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar include acting recognition for breakout performer Hoa Xuande and superstar Robert Downey Jr., as well as outstanding limited or anthology series.
Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2015 debut novel, “The Sympathizer” tells the story of “The Captain” (Xuande), a North Vietnamese soldier in the South Vietnamese army who is forced to flee to the United States with his general near the end of the Vietnam War. While living within a community of South Vietnamese refugees, he continues to spy on the community, struggling between his original loyalties and his new life.

Seth Meyers had a relatively short set at Monday’s NBCUniversal upfront, but he still got his shots in. Like this one on NBCU competitor Paramount: “I found $20 on the street this morning,” Meyers said. “Long story short, I’m one of the two finalists [to buy] Paramount.”
We’re not sure the Paramount Global special committee is going to take that offer seriously — kind of like Byron Allen’s. See? We’ve got jokes too.
For real though, the two entities playing tug-of-war with Paramount are 1) David Ellison’s Skydance and 2) a Sony/Apollo Global Management contingent.
Meyers had a few punchlines chambered for his employer. Like this one, on NBCU streaming service Peacock: “Peacock continues to prove that the easiest way to make a billion dollars is to spend eight [billion].”
Peacock is not only (still) losing a ton of money, it has yet to reveal a profitable-by date; even Paramount+ has one of those.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

Hiroyuki Sanada has been honing his acting skills for over fifty years, having started when he was six years old. He landed his first role opposite the celebrated Japanese actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba in Game of Chance. Since then, the Tokyo-born actor, 63, has barely decelerated.

That being said, we cannot overlook the brilliant performance he gave in Rachel Kondo & Justin Marks’ Shōgun. As Lord Yoshii Toranaga, he practically steals every scene of the FX series. Unfortunately, the 10-episode series is over, but he has starred in a number of similar flicks that are well worth your time.
Nevertheless, Sanada’s résumé includes a number of stellar but lesser-known roles. Rest assured, if you enjoy his portrayal of Lord Toranaga, here are three must-see films starring the talented actor that will satisfy your craving for more of his compelling performances.

Based on the eponymous 1975 novel by James Clavell, FX’s and Hulu’s Shōgun became an absolute hit. Although it wasn’t the first adaptation of the novel, it fully surpassed the 1980 series and became a critical and commercial success, both in the West and in Japan. The series was initially marketed as a 10-episode mini-series, but after the show’s success, many fans demanded a second season of the series, which made sense, since Shōgun is indeed one of the best series we’ve seen in recent years and is a hot contender for the Emmys.
But, while the cast and crew initially confirmed that they did not plan for a second season, since there is no additional material from the novel, it seems that things have changed at FX and Hulu, as it has been confirmed that a second season of Shōgun is in development and that Hiroyuki Sanada,...

Last month the world saw the last episode of FX’s Shōgun, the massively successful historical drama about powerful samurai’s battle for power. It has clearly rekindled people’s interest in the Japanese traditional samurai movies of the 20th century.
Here are 6 of the most worth-watching genre’s staples for all fans of Shōgun.
Seven Samurai (1954)
Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece is probably the first film that comes to mind to all cinephiles in this respect. The tale of a ronin tasked with gathering a group of samurai to defend a village from criminals, perfectly balancing between action and character development, was the one that paved the way for other samurai movies.
The Throne of Blood (1957)
Here comes another Kurosawa’s work, appearing to be an Asian twist on the Shakespearen story of Macbeth. Following a warrior who assassinates his sovereign at the urging of his wife, it has become...

FX spent years developing their adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun, which ranks as the most expensive scripted show the studio has ever done, but it all paid off big time with rave reviews and an impressively large audience. Despite being billed as a limited series, it’s possible that Shōgun season 2 could happen.
Deadline reports that Hiroyuki Sanada, who starred as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and also produced the series, has closed a deal to return for a potential second season. Nothing is set in stone, but FX hopes to get their ducks in a row for more Shōgun. THR added that there are “other extenuating circumstances” to overcome before FX can formally greenlight a second season. The show was the network’s biggest Hulu premiere, with 9 million streaming views globally spread across Hulu, Disney+ and Star+ in its first six days of availability.

The name Hiroyuki Sanada hardly needs an introduction. He is a seasoned campaigner after all, having been an acting powerhouse in Japanese cinema. But what takes him a cut above the rest is how he has seamlessly adapted to life in Hollywood.
Sanada has only gone from strength to strength in the industry. That is why the people behind the making of Shōgun would have thought that it was the right call to bring him back on board for one more season. But fans are totally against the move – though for another reason altogether.

The possibility of a second season for FX’s brilliant drama Shōgun just increased dramatically.
While rumors of a hypothetical second season have persisted since season 1 wrapped on April 23, Shōgun season 2 is now closer to reality than ever. Today Deadline reported that FX had cut a deal with Shōgun producer and lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada to return for a second season. Obviously, there are many other line-items that must be checked off before creating a season of television, but getting the star to put pen to paper on a contract suggests that the network (and its corporate parent Disney) is serious about this thing. The news also comes as somewhat of a surprise given the show’s ending.
In our own breakdown on the potentiality of a Shōgun season 2, we noted that it would be difficult to continue the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) and his establishment of the Edo Period.

There’s a strong chance that FX’s critical darling Shōgun will return for a second season.
Hiroyuki Sanada has signed what sources say is an “if-come” deal that would see the series star and producer return, should FX successfully jump through the multiple hoops required for a second season of the limited series. That means if FX can sort things out behind the scenes and formally greenlight a second season, Sanada would return to the franchise.
Sources stress there are other extenuating circumstances that FX and CEO John Landgraf are attempting to sort through to pave the way for a renewal. Reps for FX declined comment.

The entire world has caught "Shōgun" fever and FX seems to have taken notice. Despite originally announcing the show back in 2018 specifically as a miniseries, the critical acclaim and sheer popularity (not to mention the very high quality of writing) of the show apparently might have resulted in a change of plans. Only a few short weeks after the season finale aired and brought a fitting (if deliberately anticlimactic) end to the sweeping story of Japanese warlords embroiled in political conflict, we've now received word that this limited series might not end up being so "limited" after all. If -- and it's admittedly a big "if" -- everything falls into place, season 2 could very well be in the cards.

“Shōgun” may be returning for a second season as star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada has signed a deal with FX to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the Japan-set historical epic, sources tell Variety.
The show was billed as a limited series, but, as Variety reported Thursday, FX is considering moving “Shōgun” into the drama categories in this year’s Emmy race.
FX declined to comment.
Sources indicate that, in the event of a Season 2 renewal, Cosmo Jarvis would likely also return to reprise his role of Pilot-Major John Blackthorne. Of course, there are plenty of other pieces that must fall into place before an official greenlight.
Should “Shōgun” be renewed, FX would majorly shake up the Emmys race, pitting the big-budget series against drama contenders “The Crown,” “The Morning Show” and “Fallout,” as opposed to vying limited series “Baby Reindeer,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Ripley” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Shōgun Season 1.] Everyone who watched FX‘s fantastic Shōgun agrees: we’re sad to see this show go. The limited series debuted its Episode 10 finale on Tuesday, April 23 on FX and Hulu, revealing what Lord Yoshii Toranaga planned all along. Every death, every sacrifice was worth it, as it ushered in a new era of peace in Japan. Will we ever see a second season depicting that peaceful period? In a shocking — and exciting! — development, Shōgun Season 2 is reportedly in the works. Hiroyuki Sanada told TV Insider after the Shōgun finale that he didn’t know if a second season was possible. “I have no idea,” he said with a laugh (he was undoubtedly getting asked this question a lot). “But the novel is done.” Indeed, the FX limited (or not-so-limited…) series covered the entire plot of the James Clavell’s novel on which it’s based. But according ...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the limited series race, which remains fairly top-heavy despite what the odds might suggest. To wit: Netflix smash “Baby Reindeer” is only in fifth place in our odds, even though it’s all-but-assured of being extremely win-competitive in this race and could usurp “Shōgun” in the end as the year’s one true sensation of the year (if the latter doesn’t move to drama as widely speculated this week). “Shōgun” might be creating some drama at the Emmys.
Multiple industry insiders tell Variety that FX, the heavyweight contender in the Primetime Emmy race for outstanding limited or anthology series, is considering a bold move: shifting its submission for “Shōgun” to the drama series categories this year.
This strategic repositioning hints at the likely return of the protagonist, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Hiroyuki Sanada). Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the historical epic, celebrated for its intricate storytelling and marvelous world-building achievements, will now vie for accolades against heavy hitters like Netflix’s concluding saga “The Crown,” Apple’s intense office drama “The Morning Show,” and Prime Video’s gripping action video game adaptation “Fallout.”
FX declined to comment.

But if the goal of the Primetime Emmys is to be reflective of the shows that most engaged viewers and voters alike throughout the TV season, it needs to now go one step further. The TV Academy needs to expand the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category to eight nominees as well.
In the decade since they have re-split the Limited Series and TV Movie categories there have been plenty of winners that were a cultural moment, from “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” to “Big Little Lies” to “Watchmen,” but these event series were not as common an occurrence. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, an event that has had ramifications to the television schedule still present today.

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 sequel series, currently filming in Prague.
Already a veteran of action and science fiction genres, Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s limited TV series, Blade Runner 2099.
Currently, that’s about all we know. Even Deadline, which first published the news, doesn’t know anything useful about the character Yeoh will play or what the series will be about. Sorry about that.
The series has been in development for quite a while, though, given that it’s a sequel to 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 (itself a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner), and there’s still nothing to watch roughly seven years on.
Last year’s Hollywood strikes haven’t helped matters. At one point, Amazon Studios was gearing up for production in Northern Ireland, with...

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

Michelle Yeoh is set to lead Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099, which will serve as a sequel to both Ridley Scott's original and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049.
The first plot details for the show have also found their way online (via Daniel Richtman), and the brief synopsis outlines the basic premise of the sci-fi spin-off series.
As previously rumored, the show will be female-led, with Cora (possibly a former Blade Runner) joining forces with a Replicant named Olwen (Yeoh).
"In Los Angeles 2099, Cora lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.

Comments from Disney CEO Bob Iger following its most recent earnings report could be interpreted as a sign that Disney wants to bring linear and digital entertainment closer.
The Disney Bundle is resembling the old cable bundle more and more every day. Viewers can already access entertainment from both Disney+ and Hulu within the Disney+ app, and company CEO Bob Iger promised on Tuesday that select sports content from ESPN will arrive on the streamer before the end of 2024, ahead of a wider sports integration next year. Speaking with Wall Street analysts as part of Disney’s quarterly earnings report, Iger touted the flexibility of his platforms and pointed to shows like “Shōgun” as proof that his linear channels are working well in concert with his streamers. That’s a far cry from the tone Iger took regarding networks like ABC in summer of 2023, and the shift could signal that...

The search is triggered by a clause in Disney and Comcast’s contract for the sale of Comcast’s 33% stake in Hulu.
Those who have been following the saga of Hulu’s ownership will likely remember the discordant public rhetoric between Disney and Comcast regarding the purchase of Comcast’s 33% stake in the streamer. Way back in 2019, when Disney acquired the bulk of Fox’s entertainment assets, it also agreed to buy Comcast’s portion of Hulu by 2024, and the two sides agreed to a minimum valuation of $27.5 billion for the service to serve as the base for an eventual sale price. The two companies finally put away their sharp words and agreed to a step-by-step sale process in November 2023, but that process has now hit a snag. An exclusive report from Reuters says that the two sides are seeking a third banker to help arrive at a final valuation for the streamer,...

Team Ninja may not have made the best samurai game with Rise of the Ronin, but to the developer’s credit, it’s certainly made the most samurai game. That’s to say, Team Ninja has crafted something that feels like a massive, unwieldy turducken of all the best ideas from these types of games, with some FromSoftware and Ubisoft sauce sprinkled on top to bring the whole thing together. There’s an intricacy of interlocking systems here that’s certainly ambitious, but not all of the game’s elements are as polished as they could have been.

The two buzziest TV shows of 2024 so far are FX's "Shōgun," adapting James Clavell's 1975 book about an Englishman who winds up in 17th century Japan from novel to miniseries, and "X-Men '97," a revival of every millennial's favorite "X-Men" cartoon from 1992. But what if I told you there was a comic out there which combined the thrills of both these shows into one?
That comic is Hiroaki Samura's samurai manga "Blade of the Immortal." Set during Japan's Edo period, the titular immortal is Manji, a ronin with a checkered past. So checkered, in fact, that he was cursed by a witch with kessen-chū — "bloodworms," or grubs infused in his body that enable him to heal from almost any injury and keep Manji in his physical prime.
If you've been watching "Shōgun," you'll know how important honorable death was to warriors in feudal Japan, so Manji's immortality is not a gift.

“A Man in Full,” the sprawling Tom Wolfe novel now adapted by screenwriter David E. Kelley into a limited series for Netflix, centers on a protagonist who, for all his resources, can’t bend the world to his will. Over six episodes, the show finds itself in a similar bind. “A Man in Full” boasts an all-star cast, led by Jeff Daniels as Atlanta real estate tycoon Charlie Croker; an Oscar-winning multi-hyphenate behind the camera; and a dense lode of source material. But the show ends up far less than the sum of its parts, an oddly generic and muted take on a larger-than-life American story.
Wolfe spent the bulk of his career as a longform journalist before turning to fiction. His first novel, “Bonfire of the Vanities,” was a social satire of 1980s New York that helped define the Wall Street boom’s impact on culture. For his sophomore effort,...

Shōgun, the critically acclaimed historical drama created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, finished its 10-episode run on FX last week. Anna Sawai received acclaim from critics and viewers alike for her portrayal of the tragic Toda Mariko.
The New Zealand-born actress, 31, is expected to be flooded with some good film offers, and it would not be shocking if she got a chance to play a big superhero role at some point. When speaking with THR about her career in Hollywood, Sawai hinted that her big break might have come much sooner.
Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko in Shōgun
She had the opportunity to audition for the role of Katana in Suicide Squad (2016), but she had to pass that up because of her commitment to her J-Pop group, Faky. Fortunately for us, Sawai could still be cast in a wide range of roles that are spiritually related to her Shōgun character.

Despite the widely despised series finale of "Game of Thrones" -- which, for the record, we at /Film didn't hate nearly as much as the rest of the world seemed to at the time -- the show was an immense cultural juggernaut for HBO, and in the risk-averse television landscape, it's only natural that other channels and streamers saw that show's success and wanted to replicate it for themselves. Prime Video spend ungodly amounts of money on the rights to a TV show set in "The Lord of the Rings" universe, Netflix dumped a bunch of money into the forgotten "Marco Polo," and even History got into the mix with "Vikings."
FX, meanwhile, decided to greenlight "Shogun," a tremendously expensive-looking adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel (which was previously adapted into an ultra-popular miniseries in the '80s). After enduring production delays due to the pandemic and finally premiering this February,...

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.

Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.

The latest critical darling of the episodic content world is Shogun, a masterful adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel set in early 1600s Japan. The series has been getting a lot of love on social media for its excellent writing, standout performances, high production value, and how closely it hews to the source material.
The cast and crew behind Shogun have been interacting with fans and critics, and revealing details about the conception and creation of the world shown in the series. Hours before its final episode aired on Tuesday, April 23, FX’s “Shōgun” officially became Gold Derby’s predicted 2024 Best Limited Series Emmy winner, replacing the same network’s “Fargo.” This development has been brewing since late March, when our editors broke from the crowd by collectively making “Shōgun” their top choice in the category. Now, they are leading the charge for a fresh contender that is already threatening the new frontrunner’s path to victory.
Less than three weeks after its full series premiere, Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” stands as one of the streamer’s most popular 2024 programs with over 150 million global viewing hours and counting. Since being added to our predictions center last Monday, the buzzy, seven-part show has shot up in the main limited series race, surpassing Netflix’s “Ripley” and ultimately bumping Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air” out of the forecasted lineup derived from the predictions of 2,000+ Gold Derby users.

In 2003, martial arts enthusiast Lauro Chartrand-DelValle took a job as fight coordinator on Edward Zwick‘s historical action film “The Last Samurai” and assumed it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I thought I was extremely fortunate to get a chance to do a samurai epic once in my career,” Chartrand-DelValle told IndieWire. He was thrilled, therefore, when Hiroyuki Sanada, one of the actors from “The Last Samurai,” revealed that he was working on FX’s new adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shōgun” and wanted to collaborate with Chartrand-DelValle again. “It was a dream job,” the stunt coordinator said.
Like “The Last Samurai,” “Shōgun” is a period epic filled with elaborately choreographed action and massive challenges for a stunt team, but Chartrand-DelValle felt well prepared given the series’ generous pre-production schedule. “Right out of the gate the first huge task was to train everybody as best we could prior to going in front of the camera,...

Set at the end of the 16th century in Japan, the FX limited series follows several factions in the five Regents all vying for control and power. Intricate world-building and political machinations combine to make “Shōgun” the next “Game of Thrones.” What the two shows also have in common is a collection of superb performances from their extensive casts. Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Cosmo Jarvis lead the way in the show’s leading performances but several supporting players could also be up for an Emmy nomination, including Takehiro Hira.
Hira plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has now become a powerful bushō (a warlord). Kazunari takes charge of one of the five Regents and is the main rival of Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

NBCUniversal announced on Monday that it was raising the price of a Peacock subscription by $2 per month on both of its tiers.
The peacock has always been a sign of extravagant wealth, and NBCUniversal appears to be leaning into that stereotype. As forecast by The Streamable's experts, on Tuesday, NBCU announced that it will be raising the subscription price of its streamer Peacock, and that beginning this summer, both of its two plans will cost $2 per month more than they do now. If that’s a little too much to pay for the relatively smaller content library of Peacock, and you’re thinking about canceling the service before the price hike kicks in, check below for options that will allow you to watch a much larger array of content for the same amount, or even less, each month!
Key Facts: Netflix offers ad-supported streaming for $1 per month less than Peacock’s new price.

Shōgun season 1 is in the books, and the historical epic has garnered both critical and commercial success, with its premiere pulling in 9 million views (the most ever for an FX series) and its ten-episode run earning nearly unanimous positive reviews (it’s currently sitting pretty at 99% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). The problem is, if you’re one of the millions captivated by the sprawling mini-series, a second season is anything but confirmed. In fact, at this point, it’s unlikely to happen.
The good news: there are plenty of terrific pieces of Feudal Japanese fiction to explore, and one of the very best is the breathtaking Ghost of Tsushima. The PlayStation exclusive is just as grand in scale as Shōgun, and while it’s a different kind of samurai story entirely, it’s a perfect complement to the show in that it focuses on aspects of the setting that the show doesn’t.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains some spoilers for “Shōgun”]
There’s a scene in Episode 5 of FX’s hit show “Shōgun”, smack dab in the middle of the TV series, that acts as a microcosm for the larger narrative. The horrified English Protestant sailor, Blackthorne, wishes to give up on his mission and leave Japan and the show’s central figure of whom he’s asking permission, Toranaga, actually considers it. Then an earthquake happens. Toranaga is buried by a landslide and it’s Blackthorne who finds and pulls him out. It’s in this moment Toranaga — staring at Blackthorne who’s ripped him from death’s clutch — realizes the way towards peace despite the forces against him.
“If people know the history, they already know what Toranaga creates,” “Shōgun” star and producer Hiroyuki Sanada said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “That was the most important thing for me about this story: Toranaga ended [the Warring States period] and...
