Charles Melton’s awards campaign for his breakout role in “May December” started in May when the Todd Haynes drama co-starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman premiered at Cannes.
Since then, Melton has gone on to receive a slew of award nominations and wins. He picked up Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award noms and won a Gotham for outstanding supporting performance.
Fans of the film, however, were disappointed when Melton didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, and the movie only earned one for original screenplay.
But, I’m glad to report that Melton is doing just fine. “I’m happy,” Melton told me Wednesday night at Cultured’s art and film issue dinner (Melton and Lakeith Stanfield appear on separate covers of the magazine). “I just got back from Hawaii. I was just relaxing and processing and getting a nice little suntan. I reconnected with my friends and family...

It’s been quite a while since the world was graced with a new film from auteur filmmaker Todd Solondz. As a matter of fact, it’s been nearly eight years since the release of “Weiner-Dog,” which was during a time when streamers, such as Amazon in this case, would just throw money at independent films to fill out their streaming library. Well, thankfully, it appears the filmmaker has finally found his next film, “Love Child,” and he has one hell of a cast leading it.

Not long ago, Brad Herman, the right-hand man to hush-hush Hollywood, invited a longtime client, legendary Motown songwriter Eddie Holland, to a private visit with another client, The Supremes’ Cindy Birdsong, who since September 2021 has resided in a Los Angeles-area care facility after two strokes that have left her unable to walk or speak. Herman, who says he’s been granted power of attorney over the singer, had worked with Birdsong’s family members to extricate her from a previous living arrangement.

It’s summertime and sometimes the only means of keeping cool is vicariously via television. If the first trailer for AMC’s new limited series “The North Water” is any indication, viewers might soon be freezing.
Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of AMC:
Set in Hull, England, and on the ice floes of the Arctic in the late 1850s, the series follows the story of Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic. But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crew mates, particularly Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), a harpooner and distinctly brutal force of nature. As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, confrontation between the two men erupts, taking them on a journey far from solid ground and way beyond the safe moorings of civilization.

While the Cannes market runs concurrent with the festival July 6 – 15, a virtual effort begins this week with an embarrassment of riches: There’s Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz reunited by provocateur Todd Solondz, Alexander Payne directing Paul Giamatti two decades after “Sideways,” and Julianne Moore, starring opposite Natalie Portman, in her sixth collaboration with Todd Haynes.
There’s simply no room for filler in a market dominated by auteur passion projects and compelling genre packages. The unusually robust pool of offerings is the strongest vote of confidence yet that the business has moved past production-insurance roadblocks and theatrical despair and is ready to turn up the taps of creativity and cash.

Lawyers for the disgraced former Hollywood mogul, currently serving 23 years in New York state for third degree rape and first degree sexual assault, had delayed the extradition several times.
However on Tuesday (June 15) Erie County judge Kenneth Case ruled the extradition will proceed, despite an argument by defence lawyers that their client might not get the medical treatment he needs in a Los Angeles jail while awaiting trial.

‘Love Child’: ‘Lobster’ Pair Rachel Weisz & Colin Farrell Reunite for Todd Solondz’s New Dark Comedy
Co-stars of Yorgos Lanthimos’ morbid and borderline misanthropic “The Lobster” Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell are set to reunite, rather appropriately, in the latest film from Todd Solondz: “Love Child,” recently announced for the upcoming Cannes virtual market. According to a press release on behalf of Cinetic Media and MadRiver International, the film is touted as a “dark and hilarious twist” on the classic Oedipus story, as a precocious child plans to rid himself of his brutish father so he can have his mother all to himself.

If American indie cinema has felt a little more comfortable as of late, it perhaps can be attributed to the lack of new Todd Solondz. With the filmmaker’s last work, Weiner-Dog, debuting five years ago, he’s now finally mounting his return and it’s for a project that’s long been in development. Love Child, once set to star Penélope Cruz and Edgar Ramírez, has now found a new cast.
The Lobster duo Rachel Weisz and Colin Farrell will reteam for the project, which finds the director putting his own spin on the Oedipus complex. The story follows 11-year-old Junior, a delusional aspiring Broadway star with an inappropriate obsession with his mother (Weisz). After orchestrating an accident that nearly kills his abusive father, he encourages the handsome man (Farrell) living in the family’s guesthouse to court his mother and become his new dad. But when the two fall in love,...

The digital release of Love Child, Eva Mulvad’s extraordinary documentary about an Iranian couple in exile, prompts a look at the myriad ways of putting refugee lives on screen
The European refugee crisis has inspired so many films in recent years that the subject practically qualifies as a genre in itself, encompassing as broad a spectrum of originality and artistic value as any other. Some documentaries follow a familiar if heart-tugging template; others hit you squarely between the eyes with perspectives you haven’t previously seen or considered.
Danish director Eva Mulvad’s documentary Love Child (multiple VOD platforms), falls in the latter category. Its story is a simple one, but the patience and intimacy with which it is told give the film its unusual, building power. Over the course of six years it follows Iranian lovers Sahand and Leila as they flee their homeland and attempt to settle...

What’s your favourite Australian film of the last decade?
That’s one of the questions Aacta is putting to the general public over the coming week as voting opens for its new Audience Choice Awards.
In contention for the film award are: Peter Rabbit, Red Dog, The Sapphires, The Great Gatsby, The Water Diviner, The Dressmaker, Lion, Ride Like A Girl and Mad Max: Fury Road.
While many of those nominated correspond to the Academy’s own ‘Best Film’ winners over the past 10 years, there are some notable exclusions – 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge, 2018’s Sweet Country and 2019’s The Nightingale.
The Favourite TV Drama of The Decade category sees each broadcaster score two nods – bar Sbs, who were snubbed. They include 10’s Offspring and Neighbours, ABC’s Mystery Road and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Foxtel’s Top of the Lake and Wentworth, Seven’s Molly and Home and Away,...

‘Babyteeth’. (Photo: Lisa Tomasetti)
Alex White and Jan Chapman went to see Rita Kalnejais’ hit play Babyteeth at Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre on the same night back in 2012. By interval, the two had made a beeline to each other: they knew it had to be adapted for screen.
At that stage, White had already been working for Chapman for several years. For some time, The Piano producer had been trying to help her find her first feature – White having produced successful shorts such as Trespass and Florence Has Left the Building.
“Jan was going ‘This is it, this is it’,” White tells If.

Nearly 50 years after it aired its final episode in 1971, the legendary Ed Sullivan Show is officially headed to all streaming platforms.
From the Beatles’ debut to Elvis Presley to the Rolling Stones, iconic clips and low-resolution bootlegs of the variety show have been available for years, but this marks the first time the entire catalogue will be available digitally — thanks to a deal between UMe and Sofa Entertainment Inc.
Seven performances are available now on the show’s official YouTube channel, with new videos rolling out over the next three years.
