Cracking start.

Judith Potts heard a disturbance at the home of her neighbour Stefan Dunwoody, believing he's been killed, she begins her own investigation.

I honestly can't find any fault with this first episode, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish, my only gripe so far, why only two episodes.

Very light viewing, along the lines of Mallorca Files, Shakespeare and Hathaway etc, but it's a cut above many in the same class. I thoroughly enjoyed this first episode.

Very nicely acted, I thought Samantha Bond was terrific, as always, very good performances all round.

I am such a fan of Robert Thorogood, he's given us Death in Paradise, Beyond Paradise, and now this, another goody, only this one is sadly a little more obscure, languishing on UK drama.

I must admit that 'collection' took me straight back to Father Ted, all I was hoping for was Father Jack to burst out if something in full uniform.

What a shame this is one of only two.

9/10.

As good as its Bond

Skeepin_dragon has beaten me to it again.

If you are in the UK and peeved that we are two series behind other countries when it comes to Midsomer Murders then this should fill that hole for few.

Several of the location sites have been in Midsomer Murders and the taxi driver's house was recently used in Channel 5 comedy drama Finders Keepers.

The three leading actresses have all been in Midsomer Murders (Samantha Bond has played three different characters in the show!) s9 it is all very comfortable.

86 minutes flew by. I didn't realise it was a two parter so hopefully, the second half will be as good.

It was well written by Robert Thorogood of Death In Paradise fame so the viewers know we are in safe hands.

Episode 1

Based on the book by Robert Thorogood, who created the hit television series Death In Paradise.

Thorogood remarked that the book was inspired and a tribute to the strong women that raised him.

So the story begins with retired archaeologist Judith Potts (Samantha Bond) who goes for a swim in the local river. Only to hear a gunshot from her neighbour's garden. Art dealer Stefan Dunwoody is killed and Judith is convinced that it was murder.

Later a taxi driver, Iqbal Kassam is also found dead by dog walker Suzie Harris (Jo Martin.) Together with vicar's wife Becks Starling (Cara Horgan) they team up to investigate who murdered them and why.

Much to the consternation of the investigating officer DS Tanika Malik.

I usually find these kind of all female crime shows set in home counties suburbia to be unbalanced. Too often the humour and silliness is jacked up at the expense of the story.

Here the balance is right, there is an intriguing story and the women have skills that contribute to solving the murders. The episode ends with Judith convinced that there will be a third murder.

Great start to this modern Marple / Murder, She Wrote

As a big fan of Robert Thorogood's Death in Paradise etc, I had high hopes for Marlow and it didn't disappoint. I love that this is similar but different ie female lead with an even wider age range - although my one irk is that the parents need to discipline their kids more eg dock their allowance if they don't pull their weight! Like DiP, the mystery is gentle, but intriguing and the setting is beautiful. Unlike DiP, and most other mystery shows, the storyline is very long, being two feature length episodes, in the UKTV broadcast at least. It isn't as intense as Vera or Midsomer Murders et al, so I could possible watch it all in one go, but four short instalments might be more user-friendly.
