A true sense of cosmic weirdness
Leofwine_draca26 December 2015
An excellent, animated version of the classic Lovecraft short story. THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME was made in Sweden and clocks in at a mere fifteen minutes in length; the budget is so low that there's only room for one or two actors at a time alongside some very cheap model effects. But it's clear from the outset that this is a labour of love, and it turns out to be a hugely entertaining little movie.

The whole look and feel of the film is deliberately pulp inspired. The main character explores various locations which mainly take the form of photographs inserted into the background. The paucity of the budget hurts on occasion, but I was nonetheless surprised at how extensive and indeed true to the source material this story is. Nothing is left out that I can remember from my read of the tale some years ago, and just the right level of unsettling cosmic weirdness is summoned up as the story goes on. It's as authentic a Lovecraft adaptation as any other you can name, and more so than some.
