With a sprawling ensemble cast, a juicy Wwi setting, and based off an acclaimed memoir, "Testament Of Youth" has all the right things going for it. But sometimes these sorts of movies can almost be so perfectly calibrated that the life gets sucked out of them. However, that's not the case with this picture. In our review out of the BFI London Film Festival, we called it a "beautifully observed" picture that paints a mosaic "of grief, loss and even anger at the absolute waste of an insane, inhuman conflict, and all without showing a single bullet fired." And a new full-length trailer for "Testament Of Youth" is here. Directed by James Kent ("Margaret" and "The Thirteenth Tale"), and starring Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan, Dominic West, Emily Watson, Joanna Scanlan, Hayley Atwell, Jonathan Bailey, Alexandra...

Is a railway romance a good platform for a lasting relationship?
David Morrissey and Sheridan Smith book a one-way train to Excitementville, bypassing Responsibiltyford and Mundaneton in the BBC’s new two-part drama written by David Nicholls. But is the story merely an unambitious cliché of a Brief Encounter replacement service?
Most disappointing of any aspect inside the programme was the decision of the BBC programmers not to reschedule the entire evening to broadcast the 7.39 at its misleading self-appointed time and choose the ironically timely 9pm slot instead. For one day or two, surely the Ten O’clock News could have been delayed due to leaves on the line or some sort of signal failure directed at Huw Edwards.
David Nicholls, author of best-seller One Day, choo choo chooses one train as his subject for this mini-series. The service in question is the daily commute of the 7.39 to Waterloo.

The UK's BBC Two has a new TV movie airing on Monday, 30 December, titled The Thirteenth Tale; and we have a look at two clips from it right here. Hopefully it'll be heading Stateside via BBC America shortly!
The Thirteenth Tale, starring Vanessa Redgrave (Julia, Howard's End, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh) and Olivia Colman ("Broadchurch"), is a psychological drama adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Atonement, Dangerous Liaisons) from Diane Setterfield's bestselling novel.
It's directed by James Kent ("The White Queen") and co-stars Alexandra Roach, Robert Pugh, Steven Mackintosh, and Tom Goodman Hill.
Synopsis:
Biographer Margaret Lea (Colman) is summoned to the Yorkshire home of dying novelist Vida Winter (Redgrave), who has handpicked Margaret to write her biography. Though initially hesitant, as Vida has a reputation for distorting facts in interviews, Margaret becomes fascinated by her previously untold story.
As the novelist recounts her dark and disturbing childhood,...

Despite this being the time of year when television repeats aren't just tolerated, but welcome (if at no point in the next fortnight does Dermot Morgan get lost in a department store underwear aisle, or a snowman ride a motorbike through a Sussex field, then it just won't feel like Christmas), we've gone for brand new shows in the list below.
There's a selection of new drama, comedy and a few other bits and pieces you may wish to circle in your festive TV listings magazine... Merry Christmas.

Two young British actresses star together as twin sisters in The Thirteenth Tale, a new 90-minute gothic suspense drama from Heyday Films coming to BBC Two this Christmas.
The Thirteenth Tale is a haunting psychological mystery set in the modern day, with poignant flashbacks starting in 1940. The disturbing story begins when a young female biographer, Margaret, played by Olivia Colman, sets out to interview a legendary writer whose health is fading. Vida Winter, played by Vanessa Redgrave, has, until now, refused to divulge the dark secrets of her life and past at Angelfield, her childhood home. An unlikely shared empathy is cultivated between the two women, and Vida’s story forces Margaret to finally confront her own ghosts.
Game of Thrones star, 17 year old Sophie Turner (represented by Independent Talent) plays young Vida. Sophie is currently in the Us filming on Barely Lethal. She said of her character in The Thirteenth Tale...

BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson has revealed that he is keen to commission an adult fantasy series for BBC Two.
However, Stephenson added that he is wary of mimicking hit shows airing on rival channels, such as Sky Atlantic's Us import Game of Thrones.
"I think there is something in adult fantasy," Broadcast quotes him as saying. "It's a very interesting world and you can tell complex stories that would be difficult to tell on BBC One."
Stephenson also announced that he is interested in more contemporary drama series outside of the crime genre.
"I would be interested in what other contemporary pieces on BBC Two can have the same impact as Line Of Duty and The Fall, but don't necessarily have a basis in crime."
Family fantasy series Atlantis is currently in the works for BBC One and is being eyed as a replacement for Merlin on Saturday nights.
