With a style influenced by American made indie movies, making him stand out from the ever growing crop of Irish directors, Tom Ryan quietly made his mark on the film scene with 2014’s Trampoline, a touching and personal micro-budget coming of age drama that dealt with ones struggle with finidnging their place in the world. For his second feature, Twice Shy, the budget is that bit bigger, the story much more topical, but the result is no less intimate. With Repeal the Eighth heavy on the mind of almost every Irish person at the moment, the release of Twice Shy couldn’t be more timely, concerning young couple Andy and Maggie (Shane Murray-Corcoran and Iseult Casey) as they make the trip from Maggie’s home in Tipperary to London to deal with her unplanned pregnancy. As their journey unfolds in relative silence, we dip in and out of snippets of their past,...

The follow up to his impressive micro-budget debut Trampoline, Irish director Tom Ryan’s coming of age story Twice Shy tackles the topical issue of abortion in a respectful and thought provoking way with the tale of a young couple (Shane Murray-Corcoran and Iseult Casey) embarking on a road trip to London following an unplanned pregnancy. The film’s stint on the festival circuit is over, and it hits Irish cinemas on June 23rd. A trailer has finally come our way, and having had the pleasure of seeing this last year, I’ll just say it won’t prepare you for what this emotional, sweet, and smartly written piece of cinema has in store for you (to hear my thoughts on it, click here)...

Following his award winning, micro budgeted first feature Trampoline, up and coming Irish director Tom Ryan is tackling the timely subject of abortion with Twice Shy, the intimate story of a young Irish couple who travel to London after an unplanned pregnancy. Starring Shane Murray Corcoran, Iseult Casey, Pat Shortt, Ardal O’Hanlon, the independent feature is in the early stages on it’s festival run with the news that has been selected as part of Irish Screen America’s 2016 program, rubbing the shoulders with other Irish features like the iconic documentary Queen of Ireland, Mammal, and Tiger Raid. But that’s not all, with Ryan set to pick up the festival’s inaugural Rising Star Award. Speaking of the decision, festival organiser Niall McKay: “When we saw Twice Shy at the Galway Film Fleadh, we recognised it as the kind of truly independent production Irish Screen America was...

It was one of the best Irish independent movies of last you probably didn't see (not to mention a film that we here at The Movie Bit were fully behind. Read our review here), but now that can be rectified, with director Tom Ryan's Trampoline available to stream from online distributor seedandspark.com. Trampoline was a sweet and funny Irish feature we were more than happy to get behind during its festival run last year (read our review here), and we are delighted to report that the film has secured a theatrical release, playing a limited run, from the 21st of February to the 27th, in The Ormond Cineplex in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, the town that plays a big part in the movies production, from providing locations and actors to local businesses raising the €1000 budget. All of us here at The Movie Bit are delighted for writer/director Tom Ryan, whose love of movies sprang from working in the cinema in his younger days, and all those involved in the films production, and we predict only good things in the films future. Read the full press release below: Trampoline' a new Irish independent feature film has secured a limited theatrical release at the Ormond Cineplex Nenagh.

A few months ago, we championed Trampoline, an sweet and charming independent feature from first time Irish director Tom Ryan (you can read our review here), and since it's premiere in the Indiecork Film Festival in October, it has gone onto play at other festivals, including the Williamsburg Independent Film Festival in Brooklyn, New York, picking up the award for Best Narrative Feature while there. Add this to the Indie Fest award for Best Leading Actress won by Aofie Spratt for her role as Angie in the film, and Trampoline is doing very well for itself indeed. Well done to Tom Ryan, producer Claire Gormley, and every body involved in the production!

Taking it's cue from American indie films, Trampoline is the debut Irish feature from writer/director Tom Ryan (a full interview with Tom can be heard here). Taking a break from the usual genres most Irish features trade in, either heavy drama or horror, it's the simple story of Angie (Aoife Spratt), a young girl who returns to her hometown to start a new job as a teacher. But soon problems, both new and old, rear their heads, causing Angie to question what she wants out of life. Made on an extremely low budget (less than a thousand euros), it is a fantastic debut from the first time crew (the film was shot over six months, the production scheduled around their everyday jobs), sweet and gentle with a rich vein of charm running through it. For the most part, Trampoline is completely character driven, most of the trials and tribulations coming directly from Angie.
