- Kabir Garewal (Arjun Rampal), a Casanova film maker and screenwriter is making multiple films (GUNS Trilogy) based on a thief's life and robberies. All his films have been highly successful. Kabir has recently had his 21st breakup.
In order to shoot the third part of the trilogy, he goes to Malaysia. In reality, Kabir has no script for this 3rd movie, but he has to pretend that everything is under control, to lure in financiers. Kabir is having a severe writer's block and is out of fresh ideas. Kabir has kept the entire production unit on hold with the assurance that his script is about to be ready, but he is far from being ready. Kabir gets his inspiration from the news of a robbery at an art museum in Malaysia, where 3 paintings worth over $ 100 million were stolen in a single night.
Kabir writes the script and begins shooting the movie. It is strongly implied that as Kabir writes the script the parallel story of Roy, the art thief, comes alive. In Malaysia, Kabir meets a London-based film maker Ayesha (Jacqueline Fernandez). Kabir and Ayesha get friendly and soon falls in love. After meeting Ayesha, Kabir decides that his movie will have a female character, who would be the love interest of the art thief.
Ayesha gets several red flags about Kabir's unstable dating life, but she is charmed by his persistence and depth of thought. Ayesha ends up sleeping with Kabir. Kabir continues to write his script for the movie as his story with Ayesha progresses. When Ayesha finds out about Kabir's Casanova attitude, she breaks up with him and returns to London. The media latches on to the affair between Ayesha and Kabir, and even speculates that Kabir has cast an actress who looks just like Ayesha in his movie.
Dejected, Kabir goes into depression and returns to Mumbai, leaving his film incomplete. After several attempts, Kabir is unable to find the perfect climax for his film.
On his assistant Meera's (Shernaz Patel) suggestion, Kabir attends a film festival as part of the jury, where Ayesha's film is being screened. Ayesha thinks Kabir is following her and asks him to stay away from her life. She says that she read Kabir's script and knows that Kabir used his and Ayesha's time together to write the story of Roy and Tia. Ayesha complains that she doesn't know if she was dating Kabir or Roy, and even Kabir does not know the difference. After his father's (Anupam Kher) death (who was suffering from a long running medical problem), followed by him being sued by his film's financiers, Kabir decides to move on and complete his film.
In a parallel story, an infamous Roy (Ranbir Kapoor) is a mysterious international art thief whom no country seems to be able to get their hands on, including Detective Wadia (Rajit Kapur). On his new assignment, Roy goes to Malaysia to steal an expensive painting. The painting is one half of a masterpiece, and a collector is willing pay $120 million for the other half not in his possession.
Roy finds that the owner of the other half is the beautiful Tia (also Jacqueline Fernandez). Tia lives alone in a huge mansion where the painting is kept. Hence, Roy tries to befriend Tia during an art auction (where Roy outbids Tia on a painting that she desired) and soon impresses her with his charm by gifting the painting to Tia. Roy pretends to be a tourist to Tia. Sparks fly between them, and both start spending time together, giving Roy entry into the mansion.
Looking for the right opportunity, one night Roy runs away with the painting, leaving Tia heartbroken. Roy later regrets, as he realizes he has fallen in love with Tia. He decides to return the painting to her. Roy's handler (Barun Chanda) says that he has already accepted the deal from the art collector and hence cannot return the painting to Roy. After a small clash with the painting's new owner Abra Rizvi (Asif Basra), Roy manages to get both the paintings back. Roy threatens Abra that if the paintings are not returned, he would steal them. On receiving both halves of the painting, Tia realizes that Roy is now a changed man and forgives him.
Meanwhile, Kabir's film Guns 3 is released and is hugely successful. It is then revealed that "Roy" was a character in Kabir's film and Roy and Tia's story was actually the script of Guns 3. Kabir could actually visualize Roy inside his head and interacted with him, as he developed the script.
In the end Kabir proposes to Ayesha and they reunite, just like Roy and Tia reunite in Kabir's film. The movie ends with Roy and Tia walking together next to a bridge just like the paintings Roy had stolen.
