Penny Dreadful: City of Angels continues the supernatural legacy of the original Showtime series, shifting its setting to 1930s Los Angeles.
Penny Dreadful may have been a beloved, star-studded peak television offering that closed up shop after just three seasons, but the classic-literature-crossover Showtime supernatural series will continue its legacy with a sequel series. The premium cable channel dropped major details back in November about a follow-up series, titled Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
While the sequel series makes a dramatic shift away from the settings and characters of 2014-2016’s Penny Dreadful, it will have the support of its key personnel, namely creator John Logan, who returns to serve as writer and executive producer, joined in the latter capacity by Michael Aguilar, who's worked on recent Showtime offerings Kidding and I’m Dying Up Here.

In series one’s The Understudy, Inside No. 9 gave us an updated take on Macbeth. Here, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton put their own twist on Shakespearean comedy with an episode set entirely in a hotel corridor and written entirely in iambic pentameter, the clever sods. Regular brilliance clearly wasn’t presenting these two enough of a challenge.
It’s a challenge they pull off with relish. The writing’s smart and self-aware (“Like this iambic foot, I’m stressed, you’re not”) while the gags are a bawdy delight. Shakespeare never rhymed ‘bum’ with ‘Magnus Magnusson’, but you know he would have done,...

Stars: Rory Kinnear, Steve Delaney, Bronagh Gallagher, David Plimmer, Andy Linden | Created by Steve Delaney
When I’ve seen Count Arthur Strong on television, I do tend to watch the odd episode, but I never seem to have the time to stick with it. Reviewing Count Arthur Strong: The Complete Third Series though has allowed me to take time with it, and give it the chance it deserves.
In the third series of Count Arthur Strong, we see the character played by creator Steve Delaney along with his friends making Michael Baker’s (Rory Kinnear) life complicated. Whether it is Strong joining Scientology, performing an exorcism or going on a day trip, things are never normal in the world of Count Arthur Strong.

We chatted to actor Rory Kinnear about his roles in Sky Atlantic's Guerrilla, Bond, Penny Dreadful and more…
In Rory Kinnear’s first answer during our chat about his role in Sky Atlantic drama Guerrilla, he makes a wry joke at his own expense. He’s not a well-known actor, he says, and perhaps not one with “a particularly heroic face!” he laughs when we talk about the moral complexity of his roles. Give him an outright compliment and he deflects the praise elsewhere, onto writers and directors, John Logan for Penny Dreadful, John Ridley for Guerrilla. His role as Bill Tanner in the James Bond franchise is a “very, very small” part of an enormous machine, he stresses.

Doing the Time Warp again is trickier than it looks, as this Fox Halloween tribute to the original Rocky Horror shows...
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a formula that continues to work astonishingly well, all things considered. It’s a borderline nonsensical celebration of the camp and the queer that still delights audiences four decades on. It’s also a formula that a lot of filmmakers and stage directors are fearful to change. Not least because the musical and film has such a devout and protective purist fan-base.

When life hurts, well-crafted, traditional sitcom like Count Arthur Strong can be an indispensable salve…
There’s a period a little while after a family death, after the days spent in a traffic jam of errands, decisions and phone calls, when you have to merge back into the regular lane. Normal life demands to re-start. The fridge needs filling and the lawn needs mowing, even if, impossibly, the person who usually does both has vanished forever.
For my family like most others, normal life means watching television. Telly is the cradle that rocked us through the decades. Whatever happened to us happened against a backdrop of soaps and sitcoms.
Losing our dad though, changed things. In the flayed-skin sensitivity of the days around his funeral, flicking through the channels meant running a gauntlet. A murder on EastEnders brought unwelcome ambulances and coroners back into our living room.

If that complaint relates to anything other than Editorial Standards, it may be passed up to the BBC Trust’s Complaints and Appeals Board (Cab), the final arbiter on general grievances since 2011. And thanks to BBC transparency, such complaints are available, anonymously, to see online.

Count Arthur Strong is coming back for a third TV series.
The comedy will air seven new episodes on BBC One, with both Steve Delaney and Rory Kinnear reprising their roles.
A reboot of the original radio show, Count Arthur Strong stars Delaney as an ex-variety star, while Kinnear plays Michael, the son of his old performing partner.
Delaney said: "I'm thrilled, delighted and humbled that BBC One have requested another series of Count Arthur Strong. Where do I sign? Quick, before they change their minds!"
Co-writer Graham Linehan added: "Very happy to hear that Arthur, Michael and the gang will have more adventures. And we've got some crackers lined up for this series."
Critics were divided when Count Arthur Strong first aired on TV in 2013, with BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow describing the show as "Marmite" after recommissioning the comedy for a second series.

Graham Linehan is reportedly working on a new Channel 4 sitcom pilot set in space.
The Cloud will star Adam Buxton as part of a hapless data hub crew who are floating around Earth. Their ship is designed to protect information on the internet, even if it is only just selfies, porn and funny cat photos.
Aisling Bea and Jamie Demetriou will also star in the project, according to Radio Times.
The non-broadcast pilot will film in the spring. Channel 4 will announce whether it has received a full commission later this year.
Previous British sitcoms set in space include the iconic Red Dwarf, Nick Frost's Hyperdrive, and the TV adaptation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Linehan recently revealed that a potential musical version of his classic show Father Ted could be a success.

Father Ted creator Graham Linehan has spoken about the possibility of adapting the sitcom for the stage.
The writer told Radio Times that he believes a musical version of the show could be a success.
"I would never bring back the TV show, because of the risk you poison people's memories of the original," he insisted.
"But if you were to come up with a completely new format, I think it would be worth doing. I have this vision of a dance number, with spinning cardinals."
Although he admitted that co-creator Arthur Mathews is "not as convinced" by the idea, Linehan added: "I think it could work."
Linehan also spoke about the likelihood of the potential project referencing child sex scandals within the Catholic Church, saying: "The jokes would have to have a little bit more edge, because you just can't ignore this stuff."

Graham Linehan has hinted that the upcoming Us remake of The It Crowd will be a departure from the original series.
NBC previously attempted to adapt the Channel 4 sitcom for a 2007 pilot, producing a near shot-for-shot remake, but Linehan told Digital Spy that he wants the network's second attempt to diverge from the UK series.
"It's one of the few things I've done that could translate," he said. "You just have to pull back on the surrealism and concentrate more on the character comedy - the Americans do character comedy so beautifully, so I think you have to adapt it to suit that.
"So I'm going over [to Los Angeles] to say to them, 'Please don't do my show' - or do my show, just a suitable American version.
"I'm really glad they're giving me the chance to pitch that to them - it's better to start off with a template that actually gives you a chance.

What have Matthew Holness, Richard Ayoade, Alice Lowe and Matt Berry been up to in the decade since Garth Marenghi's Darkplace?
It’s been ten years now since author, visionary, and dreamweaver Garth Marenghi’s legendary horror TV show, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, was rescued from a vault in Peru and broadcast to a largely unappreciative audience.
Or, you know, in the reality we actually inhabit, it’s been ten years since a group of comedians donned 80s costumes and pretended to be aging filmmakers commenting on their own ‘lost’ series. Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace was a perfect send-up of both trashy low-budget horror and science fiction productions and pompous creators, as a bewigged Matthew Holness straight-facedly explained the unique genius of his horror writing alter ego even as his greatest creation, Dr Rick Dagless M.D., mugged away in the background.
It was a ludicrously high concept show,...

Never heard of veteran vaudeville star Count Arthur Strong? Don’t feel bad. He was never exactly a household name in his native U.K. Also? He doesn’t exist.
Count Arthur Strong is in fact the creation of British comedian Steve Delaney who over the past decade has played the character in seven seasons of the BBC radio sitcom Count Arthur Strong’s Radio Show! and is now reprising the role on the small screen with the sitcom Count Arthur Strong, which premieres on Hulu today.
We caught up with Delaney to talk about the past, present, and future of Count Arthur Strong.

BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow has defended the decision to recommission Count Arthur Strong.
The sitcom - co-written by star Steve Delaney and The It Crowd's Graham Linehan - has divided critics but will return for a second series.
"Comedy is the hardest thing," said Hadlow at the Edinburgh International Television Festival. "I think pre-watershed comedy's particularly difficult – it's very competitive, everyone's looking for a pre-watershed success.
"Because we haven't had a huge amount of pre-watershed comedy, people are perhaps not looking for it there yet – people need to get more familiar with the idea that there can be quite technicolor laughs quite early on BBC Two, so we'll hang on in there."
Hadlow did acknowledge that Count Arthur Strong is "a bit Marmite" in its appeal.
"You either really, really find it funny or you really don't," she said. "I think what you can't do on BBC Two...

I used to enjoy, very much, listening to Count Arthur Strong. But that was when it was on the radio, and I was in the bath. Six-thirty of a pm, the purple glower of dusk, risotto glooping away gently on the stove, and life doesn't get much better than that. I fully appreciate that expectations can vary hugely according to, for instance, personal childcare needs, personal mental health, local proliferation of guns, wholly imagined threat of incipient alien attack, etc. But the programme used to make me smile. Now, instead, it's on my television, and that is, I think, a mistake, and not just because of the...
