- Wickham is visited in jail by Colonel Fitzwilliam, who has his own reason for keeping quiet although he has an alibi for the murder as he was publicly seen in the company of one of his soldiers' widows. Elizabeth assures the staff that they have nothing to fear - whilst cancelling the ball - but is intrigued by fragments of a burned letter whose writer sought to meet Colonel Fitzwilliam in the woods. She tells Hardcastle she saw the woman believed to be the ghost in the woods but was certain she was mortal. Later she comes upon a grave in the woods and is told it belongs to the Darcy's great grandfather, a reckless gambler who almost lost Pemberley. Whilst Georgiana turns down Alveston's marriage proposal the young lawyer supports Darcy at the inquest, whose jury finds Wickham guilty of murder and sends him to the Assizes. Furthermore Elizabeth learns that Wickham has used a false name to have sex with serving girl Louisa Bidwell, who has borne his child.—don @ minifie-1
- Colonel Fitzwilliam visit Wickham in jail and it is apparent that Wickham has some hold over him. The Darcys cancel the ball and flashbacks show the reason Wickham is not welcome at family gatherings. The stress of the situation convinces Elizabeth that Darcy no longer loves her. Colonel Fitzwilliam declares his desire to marry Darcy's sister Georgiana something Darcy welcomes but leaves the decision to her. Elizabeth knows Georgiana's interests lie elsewhere. Elizabeth's views notwithstanding, a heartbroken Georgiana rejects young Alveston feeling she must support her brother. Alveston and Darcy support Wickham at the inquest but he soon finds himself bound over for trial, charged with murder.—garykmcd
