1.15: Pro-Creation by Winter Miller: Rhythm & imagery of the wordplay and the performance makes up for my lack of context and some technical aspects I didn't like
Although the UK is sometimes referred to as the 51st State, we are still separate countries and there are many things about the US that I do not know even though I may know of them. Catcher in the Rye is one such thing – a book I know of but have never read, and one which I know remains one associated with controversy as it has been cited as an influence by a few famous killers. This short film mentions the book very early on and it is clear that the pattern of speech throughout the film is meant to be influenced by this work; it flows rapidly, changing subject, varying from the small observations to the bigger thoughts and ideas.
Not knowing the book I cannot be sure that I am not missing something in watching this without that context. Perhaps it is very clever for its references, or conversely maybe it is just a copy lacking its own voice (much like Smith's Miss America in the same series might have been smarter had I not known the source it was 'inspired' by); either way I cannot say but for me it still worked because of the language. It moves very well and has a pitch and pace about it which works well with the words. It also helps greatly that Ireland does such a great job with her performance, not only making the flow work but also doing it in one take.
The technical aspect is variable. There is a lot of background noise on the film; not sure if it was deliberate or not but regardless I found it distracting and unnecessary. The idea to have the lighting on the actress change during the film is a nice one but it is not particularly well done and the suddenness of it makes it feel like perhaps it was a technical fault that they soldiered through, rather than being related to the content. Still, even with my lack of knowledge and with the technical aspects, the writing and performance make it well worth a look.
