HIMYM has certainly been in decline in quality for a considerable number of years. In fact, I would argue since the end of the wonderful second season. The show has left me angered due to the delay in revealing The Mother, and now that the show finally did reveal it, I was excited to follow the character. Rather, she has already become a point to ignore in the season.
The episode features one decent story line, which is the relationship between Ted/Lily/Marshal. The idea as to whether or not Ted bought a gift for their wedding was entertaining enough. Sure, the story has been executed better earlier in the series but it was entertaining enough nonetheless.
I loathed the Robin/Barney story. Cobie Smulders varies in her portrayal of Robin, from gaining my sympathy, then forcing me to shove that sympathy down a garbage chute! Robin is incredibly frustrating this season, and has me yelling at the TV screen incessantly and excessively the way the character normally yells. I was once behind the relationship between Barney and Robin, but currently, both characters are irritating me to a breaking point. Robin is far too domineering over Barney, to the point where she keeps James's wedding ring. What!?
I also find it difficult to understand where the writers took this character. She started out as a person who put career over relationships, and this turned out to be the reason the Ted/Robin relationship never blossomed. The point is, the character's development from a career oriented woman, into a relationship oriented woman has not been made believable.
There is one thing I care about in the final season of this very disappointing TV series: the wonderful Cristin Milioti as The Mother. Her performance has already been utterly terrific in every sense of the word. Her first encounter with Lily speaks enough about her wonders.
