While undertaking post production on Canvas the Night, sound editor Michael D. Henry claimed to have heard at least two instances of unexplained EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena. EVP is a phenomenon in which audio recordings are discovered to contain mysterious unintended or inexplicable sounds resembling speech. Some paranormal researchers believe EVP events evidence ghosts or other paranormal entities. Of particular note is in the scene where Detective Jordan Daniels (Jason Reed) is talking to an attractive jogger (Rebecca Del Sesto) who he's encountered in the park. After one of his lines, a mysterious voice reportedly whispers "It's close."
Canvas the Night is based on Eric and Nora Sharp's hit dinner theater murder mystery "La Pintura Frecuentada".
Canvas the Night pays homage to Modest Mussorgsky's famous "Grand Promenade" theme from "Pictures at an Exhibition" in two places. During the scene where Harold Segerstrom breaks into tears, composer Michael D. Henry's score is a distorted version of the theme. Later in the film, Detective Godunov's ringtone is revealed to be a simplified electronic version of the same "Promenade" theme.
