Strange, repetitive and monotonous commercial
Rodrigo_Amaro29 January 2023
A strange and repetitive advertising made for jeans company Marithé et François Girbaud, "Closed" presents three different scenarios with a couple where the captions mentions something about fashion and its importance, and a brief dialogue between man and woman appears here and there. First sequence it seems they're running away from someone since they're all frantic and the man carries the woman in his arms; second scenario they exchange some words where he questions her about fashion and she replies with one word each time he asks her, but always smiling; and the third part he's injured and laying near the ocean with the waves crashing on him and the woman trying to help him - there's more dialogue in this bit but I couldn't understand anything and sadly there are no captions for it. And at the end of each segment, the black screen stays for like fifteeen seconds then moves ahead and after the presentation of all segments, it starts all over again with a slight variation.

Weird, unusual and without any possible appeal either visual or sonorous, here's another weak moment for JLG since there's no idea behind what's presented neither something that can make us admire the product being sold - and by the way, where's the jeans anyway? His other commercial for the brand called "Closed Jeans" actually shows the product and the concept was better developed - but weak the same way. He knows how to sell his movies - both in itself and also the film trailer/bande-annonces he made through the years, but as an advertising director he is quite a mess. The timing and his unique style while controlling the art form of cinema are incredible and very suitable for a commercial but unfortunately he didn't know how to create an appealing concept to the masses neither to the small circles who admire his artistry. Thumbs down to this. 4/10.
