Quotes

  • [Carol tells Lizzie to look at the flowers]

Carol Peletier : You just... just look at the flowers, Lizzie.

Carol Peletier : [as Lizzie cries to look at the flowers]  Just look at the flowers.

Carol Peletier : [when Carol takes her gun out]  Just... just look at the flowers.

[Carol cocks it and aims, firing a shot at Lizzie]

  • [Carol tells Mika that she needs to toughen up or she can get killed]

Carol Peletier : You're little and you're sweet and those are two things that can get you killed. You can't change how big you are...

    Mika Samuels : I wish I could.

Carol Peletier : But you can toughen up.

Mika Samuels : I don't have to be tough. I can run. I'm good at that.

Carol Peletier : No. My daughter ran and it wasn't enough.

  • [Carol tells Tyreese that she killed Karen and David]

Carol Peletier : I killed Karen and David. I had to stop the illness from breaking out. I had to stop other people from dying.

Carol Peletier : [Carol cries]  It wasn't Lizzie. It wasn't a stranger. Tyreese, it was me. You do what you have to do.

Tyreese Williams : [Tyreese clenches on the cabin table]  Did she know what was happening? Was she scared? It was quick?

Carol Peletier : Yes. Do what you have to do.

Tyreese Williams : [Tyreese looks at the gun between them before taking a moment to look back at Carol]  I forgive you. I'm never gonna forget. It happened. You did it. You feel it. I know you do. It's a part of you now. Me, too. But I forgive you.

Carol Peletier : [Carol whispers]  Thank you.

Tyreese Williams : We don't need to stay. We can't stay.

  • [last lines]

Lizzie Samuels : [in a voice-over Carol tells Lizzie that we all change]  I'm not afraid to kill. I'm just... afraid.

Carol Peletier : [Carol's voice]  You can't be.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie's voice]  How?

Carol Peletier : [Carol's voice]  You fight... and fight it. You don't give up. And then one day, you just change. We all change.

  • [Carol tells Tyreese her joke about beer nuts and deer nuts]

Carol Peletier : My husband used to hunt. He'd tell the same stupid joke every year.

Tyreese Williams : You gonna tell it?

Carol Peletier : [Carol smiles]  Well, I guess I have to now, right?

    Tyreese Williams : You do.

Carol Peletier : Okay. What's the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer nuts are around 1.79, deer nuts are just under a buck.

Tyreese Williams : [Tyreese laughs]  That's good stupid, but in no way is it stupid good.

Carol Peletier : [Carol smiles]  Yeah, I told you. There's more where that came from.

  • [first lines]

Carol Peletier : [Carol and Lizzie sit together in the middle of the night]  You can sleep, Lizzie.

Lizzie Samuels : I'm okay. If there's trouble, I can take Judith. I can help.

Carol Peletier : You really think you can help me?

    Lizzie Samuels : I know I can, Ma'am.

  • [Lizzie asks Carol if she thinks they'll be kids at Terminus]

Lizzie Samuels : Do you think there'll be kids there? At Terminus?

Carol Peletier : If their parents kept them safe. Like Tyreese kept all of you safe.

Lizzie Samuels : I saved Tyreese. There were people shooting at him. I shot them. First a man, then a woman. I didn't mean to shoot her in the head.

Carol Peletier : You had to. You saved Tyreese.

Lizzie Samuels : Maybe there'll be kids there, even if their parents couldn't keep them safe. Maybe the kids kept their parents safe.

  • [Lizzie asks Carol if she had any kids]

Lizzie Samuels : Did you have kids?

    Carol Peletier : I did. A kid. A daughter.

Lizzie Samuels : What was she like?

Carol Peletier : She was sweet. She didn't have a mean bone in her body.

Lizzie Samuels : Is that why she isn't here now?

Carol Peletier : [Carol in a low voice]  Yeah.

Lizzie Samuels : Do you miss her?

    Carol Peletier : Every day.

Lizzie Samuels : Would you miss me?

Carol Peletier : I'm not gonna have to miss you. You're dead on your feet.

  • [Carol asks Tyreese if he's seen the way Lizzie's been acting]

    Tyreese Williams : Lizzie's tough.

Carol Peletier : When it comes to people.

Tyreese Williams : What do you mean?

Carol Peletier : You haven't seen it? How she's confused about them, the Walkers. She doesn't see what they are. She thinks they're just different.

Tyreese Williams : Mika the same way?

Carol Peletier : [Carol looks to Mika in the distance]  No, she's worse. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body.

  • [Carol tells Lizzie and Mika how the story of Tom Sawyer ended]

Lizzie Samuels : Did 'Tom Sawyer' have a happy ending? We never got to finish it.

Carol Peletier : Well, Tom and Huck, they stop Injun Joe and his partner and wind up getting all his gold.

Mika Samuels : So they wind up rich?

Carol Peletier : Mm-hmm. And the Widow Douglas adopts Huck.

Mika Samuels : [Mika smiles]  Like you adopted us?

Carol Peletier : [Carol smiles]  Yeah, just like the Widow Douglas.

Mika Samuels : [Mika smiles]  And I'm Huck Finn.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie looks to Mika]  I think you're more like Tom Sawyer.

Mika Samuels : Yeah, you're right. You're way more like Huck Finn. You're not even grossed out by dead rabbits.

  • [Mika tells Carol that she will never kill people]

Mika Samuels : I can kill Walkers. I mean, I've tried. I'm not like my sister. I'm not messed up. I know what they are. But I can't kill people. I could never do that. When the bad people were at the prison, they were right in front of us and I held up my gun, but I couldn't pull the trigger. Killing people is wrong. Someone killed Karen and David. They just killed them. They were nice.

Carol Peletier : What about people who try to kill you?

    Mika Samuels : I don't even wish I could.

Carol Peletier : [Carol looks into Mika's eyes]  People came in and killed our friends.

Mika Samuels : And I feel sorry for them.

    Carol Peletier : Why?

Mika Samuels : Because they probably weren't like that before.

  • [Mika kills a Walker in front of Lizzie]

Carol Peletier : Mika, lower the gun. You did it. You saved them.

Carol Peletier : [as Lizzie starts to cry]  Why are you upset, Lizzie? Were you scared?

    Lizzie Samuels : No.

Carol Peletier : Then why are you crying?

Lizzie Samuels : I don't want to say.

  • [Carol tries to tell Mika that sooner or later she will have to kill]

Carol Peletier : Sooner or later you're gonna have to do it. You'll have to do it or you'll die. So you're gonna change the way you think about it. You have to change. Everyone does now. Things don't just work out.

Mika Samuels : [Mika points into the woods]  Look.

Mika Samuels : [Mika smiles when she sees a cabin]  My mom used to say everything works out the way it's supposed to.

  • [Carol kills the Walker that she finds Lizzie playing with]

    Carol Peletier : Lizzie! Lizzie!

Lizzie Samuels : [when Carol stabs the Walker in the head]  No! No! She was playing with me. She wanted a friend.

Carol Peletier : [Carol shouts]  She wanted to kill you.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie shouts]  I was gonna lead her away.

Carol Peletier : You could have died.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie yells]  It's the same thing! You killed her! You killed her! It's the same thing!

    Carol Peletier : Lizzie.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie screams]  What if I killed you? What if I killed you?

    Carol Peletier : Lizzie.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie screams]  You don't understand. You don't understand.

    Carol Peletier : Lizzie.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie yells]  You don't understand. You don't understand. You don't understand!

Carol Peletier : [Carol shouts]  Lizzie. Lizzie.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie gasps]  You didn't have to. You didn't have to.

  • [Mika sees the fire still burning in the distance]

Mika Samuels : The fire's still burning.

Carol Peletier : It could have gone out.

Mika Samuels : Nope. The smoke's black. If it was white, the fire wouldn't be burning anymore. I miss science class. Except for when we had to do stuff like cut up planaria worms.

Carol Peletier : You've got to do worse than that nowadays, Mika.

    Mika Samuels : I don't gotta.

Carol Peletier : You do. Lizzie's bigger than you and in some ways she's stronger. But you're smarter and you understand these... things. You've got to look out for her.

  • [Carol and Mika find a deer in the woods while hunting]

Carol Peletier : [Mika aims her rifle at the deer]  Just like I showed you at the prison. Go ahead.

Mika Samuels : [when Mika lowers her rifle]  I can't.

Mika Samuels : [Mika smiles up at Carol]  We have peaches.

  • [Carol tells Lizzie that killing Walkers is growing up]

Carol Peletier : Do you understand what they are now?

Lizzie Samuels : I know... I know what I have to do now. I know.

Carol Peletier : It's ugly and it's scary and it does change you. That's how we get to be here. That's the cost. That's growing up now.

  • [Carol teaches the sisters how to cook pecans]

Carol Peletier : I used to make these with my grandma when I was little.

Mika Samuels : They smell good.

Carol Peletier : There you go. All right. I think you guys are ready to start doing the cooking around here. Who wants to put 'em in?

[as both girls smile to cook]

  • [Lizzie points her gun at Carol telling her that they have to wait for Mika to come back]

Lizzie Samuels : [as Lizzie holds her gun at Carol]  No, no, no! We have to wait. I need to show you. You'll see. You'll finally get it. We have to wait.

Tyreese Williams : Lizzie, put the gun down.

Lizzie Samuels : I just want us to wait.

Carol Peletier : [Carol with tears in her eyes]  We can wait. We can wait. You just give me the gun. We can wait, I swear.

  • [Tyreese finds out from Lizzie that she was the one killing animals at the prison]

Tyreese Williams : I brought her some food. Cleared out her room. Made sure she didn't have any knives, anything like that. She has a shoe box full of mice. I asked her if she was the one feeding the walkers at the prison. That was her. And at the tombs, we found this rabbit pulled apart and nailed to a board. That was her, too. Said she was just having fun. I was thinking, maybe she killed Karen and David. But I don't know how she could drag them away.

Carol Peletier : She would have let them turn. It wasn't her.

  • [Carol and Tyreese realize that Lizzie can't be around other people]

Carol Peletier : She can't be around other people.

Tyreese Williams : Maybe we could try to help her. Talk her back somehow.

Carol Peletier : This is how she is. It was already there. I didn't see it.

Tyreese Williams : How could you?

Carol Peletier : I should have seen it.

Tyreese Williams : So maybe we go. Me and Judith.

Carol Peletier : You won't make it either. She can't be around other people.

  • [Carol tells Lizzie that she should pick some flowers for when Mika comes back as a Walker]

Carol Peletier : You should pick some wildflowers for Mika to give her when she comes back.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie smiles]  Yeah, she'd love that.

  • [Carol sees the smoke from the fire in the distance]

Lizzie Samuels : The fire's still burning.

Carol Peletier : No. The smoke's white. It's out.

Lizzie Samuels : [when Carol remembers what Mika told her]  You know everything, Ma'am.

    Carol Peletier : [Carol's voice cracks]  No, I don't.

  • [Lizzie apologizes to Carol for pointing her gun at her]

Lizzie Samuels : What is it? What is it? Are you mad at me? Is that what you wanted to talk to me about? I'm sorry I pointed my gun at you. I just needed you to wait.

Carol Peletier : [Carol with tears in her eyes]  I know.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie turns her back to Carol crying]  I'm sorry. You're mad at me.

Carol Peletier : [Carol's voice cracks]  I love you, Lizzie.

Carol Peletier : [Lizzie sniffles]  And everything works out the way it's supposed to.

Lizzie Samuels : [Lizzie continues to cry]  I'm sorry. Please don't be mad at me. I'm sorry.

  • [Tyreese tells Carol that the whole world is haunted now]

Tyreese Williams : I dream about Karen. I see her every night. And every time I forget she's dead. Sometimes... we just talk. And sometimes I see her in the crowd... in a city I've never been to. And it's back before everything happened.

Tyreese Williams : [as Carol tears up]  And then... some nights, the bad ones... I see someone kill her. Some stranger. Then I lose her all over again. But that's the deal, right? The people who are living are haunted by the dead. We are who we are. And we do what we do 'cause they're still here. In our heads. In the forest. The whole world is haunted now. And there's no getting out of that. Not until we're dead.

Carol Peletier : [Carol starts to cry]  Tyreese. Maybe they're not haunting us. Maybe they're just teaching us. Helping remind us so... so that we can live with what we have to do.

Tyreese Williams : Hey. Don't you ever be ashamed of who you are, Carol. You did right by those girls. You did right by everyone.

[when Tyreese hugs Carol to him]

  • [Lizzie tells Carol that Judith can change too]

Carol Peletier : You and Tyreese should take Judith back. It's not safe for her.

Lizzie Samuels : But Judith can change, too. I was just about to...

Carol Peletier : [Carol's voice cracks]  She can't even walk yet.

Lizzie Samuels : Yeah, you're right.

Carol Peletier : So you two take Judith back to the house and we'll have lunch. And I'll just tie Mika up. You know, just so she won't go anywhere.

Lizzie Samuels : Promise that's what you'll do?

Carol Peletier : [Carol with tears in her eyes]  Mm-hmm. I promise. I'll use her shoelaces.
