Blood on Satan’s Paw is new surreal folk horror from writer and director Richard Mansfield, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 21st January. I got chance to ask Richard about his inspirations for the film, the sudden increased interest in Folk Horror and the bespoke score from Cunning Folk.
What can we expect from the film Blood on Satan’s Paw?
You can expect a surreal trip to the woods, bad bunnies, creepy puppets, acid-laced lollipops and a demonic bear.
What was your inspiration for writing Blood on Satan’s Paw?
I was very much inspired by the Folk Horror classics like The Wicker Man, Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan’s Claw as well as all the original Hammer films from a youth spent watching inappropriate horrors I’d recorded off late night TV.
There seems to be an increased interest in Folk Horror.

Screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have dealt with heightened emotions through their work in adaptations of Young Adult novels like The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, but in Tommy Wiseau of The Disaster Artist they might have found the ultimate symbol of volatility. As played by James Franco in the film, Wiseau is a force of nature who refuses to bend down to things such as budgetary restrictions, other people’s feelings, and even common sense. His mission is to shoot The Room, a film in which he’s put all his energy and hopes. He doesn’t care that his film seems to make no sense, that his actors don’t know what they should be doing, and that the people he’s hired to work with him have no clue as to what he expects from them.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and here is what we’re most excited about this week:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘The Wine Show’
Pour another glass because our favorite import -- Matthew Goode -- is back with a second season of The Wine Show, Sky Vision’s food and travel magazine series, which moves the action from Italy to the South of France. Available on in the U.S. on Hulu, the show became a favorite among viewers thanks to the bromance between Goode and co-host Matthew Rhys and their journey through the heart of Italy in search of tasty wine and lasting memories. Joining Goode (who also stars on The Crown season two) is James Purefoy, an equally English and handsome actor, who steps in for Rhys. This season, two hosts are tasked with finding a case of wine to match a six-course French lunch cooked by Stephane...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is the best TV director? Why? (For old, current or upcoming shows.)
Marisa Roffman (@marisaroffman), TV Guide Magazine
The recent Emmy Awards was a good reminder of just how great television directors are right now. It was the best overall crop we’ve had in years, and one of the few categories where it felt like it could have gone any way.
But in terms of best television director, I’m partial to David Nutter. His 30-plus year resume is impressive (“The Sopranos,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” plus an Emmy win for “Game of Thrones”) and wildly varied (he’s done procedurals like “Without a Trace,...

Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Hardwell is closing out the year with a special mix that encompasses some of 2014’s hottest tracks. Taking to his podcast, Hardwell On Air, the Dutch DJ has put together a two hour episode that will be released in two parts, the first of which was uploaded today.
Featuring music from the producer himself, along with a few Revealed Recordings label mates and some of Edm’s hottest artists, like Zedd, Galantis, Dada Life, Oliver Heldens and many more, the mix is full of big room tracks and gives us a nice sample of some of the best that the genre had to offer in 2014.
Even if you don’t dig the song selection here, it’s very well mixed and shines a light on some great remixes that probably flew under the radar this year. It’s a solid hour of music and I’d definitely suggest giving it...

We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. "In 2014, we are taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of decadence, destruction and debauchery." - Tim League As much as I love events like Cannes, Sundance, or Toronto, I can't imagine the directors of those festivals ever issuing that statement. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. We’ve got sequels like The ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral, and originals like Kevin Smith’s anticipated Tusk and The Babadook. Roberto Orci is one of those people who is simultaneously unknown and infamous. Why? Because: Internet. If you don’t know him, you know his work. Alongside longtime collaborator Alex Kurtzman, Orci co-wrote some of the biggest franchises in Hollywood: Their names are on Transformerses and Star Treks and most recently The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Orci and Kurtzman co-created two swell genre shows (Fringe and Sleepy Hollow) and still cash checks on the Hawaii Five-o reboot. (Also, Cowboys & Aliens.)
Orci has always been a key figure in Paramount’s rebooted Star Trek series. Although the films’ creative team included Kurtzman,...

One of Saturday Night Live's best sketches of the season didn't even make it to air. The surreal, borderline disturbing"Wing" stars this past weekend's host, Andrew Garfield, as Matt, an undershirt-wearing teen heartthrob who rejects the sexual advances of Dylan (cast member Beck Bennett) in pursuit of his friend's teriyaki chicken wing. You know, the usual sketch stuff.
50 Greatest 'Saturday Night Live' Sketches of All Time

That headline isn’t meant to be a knock on Andrew Garfield, who was nimble and vibrant as Peter Parker (post-spider bite, of course) in his SNL hosting debut. His face sported a gigantic, adorable grin for about 75 percent of last night’s 90-minute show; he easily and smoothly transitioned between British and American accents, even multiple times in the same sketch; he showed a real knack for flustered buffoonery, almost saving an iffy wedding toast sketch by sheer force of personality alone. (Key word there: almost.)
Garfield was good enough that it’s puzzling the show didn’t give him more to do.

We’re here in the final stretch of the “Saturday Night Live” season, with just three consecutive episodes separating us and wild speculation about the fortieth season of the program. I have a few thoughts on what to look for over these three weeks, but the promos this week suggest “SNL” might have an extremely fun and game host in Garfield. He has cameo’d in the past when real-life girlfriend Emma Stone has hosted (look for her to return the favor tonight), but this is his first chance to show the comedic touches he brings to Peter Parker in a sketch-comedy setting. Along for the ride is musical guest Coldplay, who ironically last appeared on “SNL” when Stone hosted. Maybe Spider-Man will fight them as two-thirds of The Sinister Six. Not an Extremely sinister six, I’d grant you. But hey, what do I know? As always, I’ll be liveblogging,...

Martin Starr of Freaks and Geeks and Judd Apatow-verse fame may not be the first person that you’d think will be in your favorite horror film of 2014. And yet that could very well be the case when you experience the inspired lunacy of Tommy Wirkola’s Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, the ballsier, brasher, better follow-up to the Nazi zombie hit Dead Snow. Starr plays the leader of a trio of undead experts known as the Zombie Squad in this Raimi-esque bit of inspired lunacy. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Red vs. Dead was a twisted surprise, and Starr sat down with us a few days later to talk practical effects, un-pc humor, and the joy of working with people as crazy as you are. Fearnet: What was it like seeing the film, not just really for the first time, but with an amped crowd at a midnight Sundance premiere?...

Russian feminist punk rock protest group Pussy Riot is on the poster and Russia is in focus at Sweden’s 37th Göteborg International Film Festival (Jan 24-Feb 3) – the largest showcase in the Nordic countries.
The selection of 20 films “is both artistically strong and takes up current subjects, such as freedom of speech and distribution of resources,” explained the festival’s artistic director Marit Kapla.
The focus includes Russian director Aleksej German’s Hard to Be a God (Trudno byt Bogom), completed by his wife Svetlana Karmelita and son after German’s death.
Taisija Krugovykh and Vasilij Bogatov’s Pussy versus Putin, about Pussy Riot’s action, will be introduced by the directors, as will Alexander Gentelev’s Putin’s Games.
Unspooling almost 500 films from 76 countries at 25 venues, adding seminars, concerts, talk-shows and exhibtions, the festival – which last year registered 132,447 admissions – will again honour Best Nordic Film with a Dragon Award and Sek 1 million ($150,000) cash, this year from...

But just before Christmas Estelle returns home with the couple 's young daughter and a very simple message: Tommy is coming home and it's time for everyone to pay their debts.Due for release in March 2014, the first trailer for this one has arrived and it looks very much like it could end up being the next buzz title in the current wave of Scandinavian crime stories....
